Alpha testing is operational testing at the developer’s site, conducted outside the development organization by potential users, customers, or an independent test team. Beta testing is operational testing by potential or existing users or customers at an external site not otherwise involved with the developers. The clearest differences are where testing takes place, who participates, and what feedback the team wants.

What is the difference between alpha and beta testing?

Comparison Alpha testing Beta testing
Setting At the developers’ site, but outside the development organization. At an external site not otherwise involved with the developers.
Participants Potential users or customers, or an independent test team. Potential and/or existing users or customers.
Common purpose Often used as internal acceptance testing, particularly for commercial off-the-shelf software. Often used as external acceptance testing to gather market feedback and assess user needs and business-process fit.
Terminology These distinctions reflect common ISTQB glossary usage; organizations may use the terms differently.

These are distinctions of setting, participants, and feedback context—not universal maturity grades. The definitions do not establish a required duration, tester count, or rule that every project must run a formal alpha phase before beta. ISTQB describes common uses, not a mandatory lifecycle for every software project. See the ISTQB Glossary definition of alpha testing and the ISTQB Glossary definition of beta testing.

Who performs alpha testing?

Under the ISTQB definition, alpha testing may be performed by potential users or customers, or by an independent test team, at the developers’ site and outside the development organization. “At the developers’ site” distinguishes the setting from external beta testing; it does not mean that the testers must be software developers.

ISTQB notes that alpha testing is often used as a form of internal acceptance testing for commercial off-the-shelf software. That describes a common use, not a requirement for every company or product.

What is an example of beta testing?

Microsoft describes a beta example for UWP apps: people outside the app-development team try an unreleased app on their own devices. They use it without prescribed tasks, choosing how to explore it. That can reveal device-configuration, performance, or real-world usage issues that a more controlled test might not expose.

This is an illustration from Microsoft’s Windows app guidance, not a required procedure for every beta program. Microsoft also cautions that self-directed testers may not visit every feature, so beta feedback cannot establish that all defects have been found. Beta testing complements other testing methods; it does not replace them. See Microsoft Learn’s UWP beta-testing guidance, updated July 14, 2025.

How do alpha and beta testing fit into a project?

For example, a team might first invite selected potential customers or an independent test team to try a near-complete application at the developer’s site, outside the development organization. That fits the ISTQB alpha definition. The team might then offer an unreleased app to external users who try it on their own devices and explore it freely, resembling Microsoft’s beta example.

This sequence is illustrative, not a universal release checklist. Microsoft’s UWP guidance describes beta as a final testing stage before release in that platform context, after explicit use cases have been tested. That does not make the same ordering mandatory for all software projects.

What each phase can—and cannot—tell you

Alpha: acceptance in the developer setting

Alpha testing can help assess whether a product is acceptable to potential users or customers in its developer-site context. The ISTQB description does not guarantee that a particular alpha test will find every defect or prove the product ready to ship.

Beta: feedback from external users

Beta testing can provide market feedback and show how users experience a product outside the developers’ setting. In Microsoft’s app example, using personal devices and self-directed exploration can expose device, performance, and usage issues. The same freedom means participants may not cover all features, so beta results should be considered alongside other testing methods.
