Almond is an open-source research assistant from Stanford designed to turn natural-language requests into programs that connect online services and Internet of Things devices. Its distinctive idea is not just answering questions: users can describe trigger-and-action workflows, while Thingpedia supplies available capabilities, ThingTalk expresses the workflows, and ThingSystem manages and runs them.

What Almond is—and what it is not

Almond is a programmable virtual assistant developed by Stanford researchers. It is better understood as an open assistant architecture and research project than as a conventional smart-speaker product. Its design aims to let people connect services and devices without being confined to one vendor’s assistant ecosystem.

For example, a user might want a notification when a sensor detects a particular condition. Almond’s approach is to let the user describe that trigger-and-action task in natural language. Whether it can carry out a particular request depends on whether the necessary service or device functions are available to it.

How Thingpedia, ThingTalk and ThingSystem fit together

Almond’s architecture separates the catalog of capabilities, the language used to compose them and the software that executes them.

Its sleek aluminum body with a textured wave finish features a vivid AMOLED display, letting you check battery and recording status at a glance, while it seamlessly works with Apple Find My to ensure you never misplace it
  • Thingpedia is a crowdsourced knowledge base describing natural-language interfaces to services and open APIs. It provides the functions Almond can use.
  • ThingTalk is a high-level language for composing those services and Internet of Things actions into programs, including trigger-action workflows.
  • ThingSystem is the open-source runtime. It executes programs and manages credentials and user data.

This separation matters: Thingpedia describes what integrations are available, ThingTalk represents how to combine them, and ThingSystem handles running the result. The architecture paper presents Almond as an open, crowdsourced, privacy-preserving assistant for online services and IoT.

How Almond differs from Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant

The clearest distinction supported by Stanford’s descriptions is Almond’s emphasis on open extension and user-programmed workflows, rather than a measured superiority over commercial assistants. The cited Stanford materials do not provide current head-to-head benchmarks, nor do they establish the current feature set or support commitments of those products. The comparison below is therefore about what the sources establish, not a claim that one assistant performs better.

Project model Open-source research software from Stanford; the architecture is designed for community extension. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017) Not stated in the cited Stanford materials.
Trigger-action workflows Designed to let users specify trigger-action tasks in natural language, when the needed functions are available. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017) Not compared in the cited Stanford materials.
Data and execution ThingSystem can run on a personal phone or home server, with the stated aim of keeping sensitive data under the user’s control. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017) Not compared in the cited Stanford materials.
Integrations and breadth Uses Thingpedia capabilities and has been described as integrating with Home Assistant. The sources give historical prototype figures, not a current catalog. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017; Stanford project description, 2020) Not compared in the cited Stanford materials.
Current maturity and support Current compatibility and maintenance are not established by the cited Stanford descriptions. Not compared in the cited Stanford materials.

In practical terms, Almond is most relevant to people interested in open integrations, programmable automation and local control. It should not be assumed to match the breadth, polish or ongoing support of a commercial assistant: the cited sources do not establish that comparison.

Does Almond run locally, and what does that mean for privacy?

Local execution is part of Almond’s privacy model. Stanford’s architecture description says ThingSystem can run on a personal phone or home server, allowing sensitive data to remain under the user’s control. Stanford’s EE380 description likewise frames privacy and data ownership around decentralized systems that can be programmed with natural language.

That describes an architectural goal, not a guarantee that every request or integration is processed locally. A workflow may depend on an online service or API, and the cited descriptions do not specify the data handling of every possible integration. Anyone evaluating a deployment should check where its runtime is hosted and what each connected service receives.

Can Almond control Home Assistant devices?

Stanford described Almond as integrated with Home Assistant, an open-source local gateway that can reach hundreds of IoT devices. That makes Almond relevant to local smart-home setups: Home Assistant can provide a route to devices, while Almond’s natural-language and programming layer offers a way to compose available functions.

It also does not guarantee that any particular Home Assistant device, integration or Almond installation will work today. Confirm compatibility and maintenance for the specific Home Assistant and Almond versions before relying on a setup.

What the prototype results show—and what they do not

Stanford’s 2017 results demonstrate that Almond could interpret and compose a range of requests in an early prototype. They are historical research measurements, not current performance guarantees.

Reported result What it means
187 functions across 45 device types Repertoire reported for the working prototype by Stanford researchers in 2017; it is not a current integration count. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017)
About 40% of complex tasks understood Reported for users familiar with Almond in a 2017 early experiment. The paper cautioned that the experiment did not include real usage data. (Stanford architecture paper, 2017)
More than 7,000 training sentences Training data reported by Stanford researchers in 2017. (Stanford research report, 2017)
53% top-five success on valid inputs Reported for valid inputs from users familiar with Almond in 2017. This is a top-five result, not a claim that 53% of arbitrary requests were completed correctly. (Stanford research report, 2017)

These figures use different measures and should not be collapsed into one accuracy score. In particular, top-five success on valid inputs is not the same as understanding complex tasks, and neither figure establishes present-day performance.

Who should consider Almond?

  • Home-automation enthusiasts who already use Home Assistant and want to explore natural-language workflows, subject to checking current compatibility.
  • Developers and researchers interested in ThingTalk, service integrations, open APIs or assistant architecture.
  • Privacy-conscious tinkerers willing to investigate hosting and integration data flows rather than assume every connected service is local.

For someone seeking a ready-made assistant with clearly documented current device support and support commitments, the cited Stanford material is not enough to establish that Almond is a suitable replacement. Its strongest documented contribution is an open approach to composing services and IoT actions, not a current consumer-product specification.
