If a form, statement, or sign-in window won’t open, allow pop-ups for that website first rather than turning off blocking everywhere. Choose your browser and device below; the controls differ between desktop browsers and Safari on iPhone or iPad.
Choose a site-specific exception or change the default
A site exception keeps pop-ups blocked elsewhere while allowing the feature you need on one website. Use the broader setting only if you want to change how the browser handles pop-ups across sites. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari on Mac provide ways to control pop-ups; Safari on iPhone and iPad has a separate system setting. Google Chrome Help, Mozilla Support, Microsoft Support, and Apple’s Mac guide document these controls.
Allow pop-ups in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome and select More (three dots) > Settings.
- Select Privacy and security > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects.
- To allow one site, return to it after Chrome blocks a pop-up and use the blocked-pop-up icon in the address bar to always allow pop-ups for that site. You can also add it to the allowed list on the Pop-ups and redirects page.
- To change the default for sites generally, choose the setting you want on that page.
Chrome blocks pop-ups by default, but Google notes that some legitimate sites use pop-up windows to display web content. If this is a work or school browser, an administrator may control the setting.

- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security and scroll to Permissions.
- To allow one site while keeping the blocker on, select Exceptions and add the website.
- To disable blocking broadly, clear Block pop-up windows.
Firefox’s pop-up settings also cover third-party redirects in its documented controls. Mozilla cautions that blocking every pop-up can disable features some sites, including banks, use. Its blocker also does not catch every method used to display pop-ups.

Allow pop-ups in Microsoft Edge
- Open Settings and more > Settings.
- Select Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects.
- For an exception, add the site URL under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects.
- To change the general setting, change the Blocked (recommended) toggle.
Edge may open a window after you select a button or link on a page. Microsoft says this user-initiated behavior is not prevented by the pop-up blocker, so it does not necessarily mean the setting failed.
Allow pop-ups in Safari on a Mac
- In Safari, open Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Websites.
- Select Pop-up Windows in the left column. Scroll down if it is not visible.
- For a site-specific exception, set the menu beside that site to Allow.
- To change the default for other sites, choose Allow beside When visiting other websites. You can also choose Block and Notify to decide when a site requests a pop-up.
Apple notes that some sites need pop-ups for essential content, and blocking them can keep that content from appearing. See Apple’s Safari for Mac instructions.

If pop-ups or alerts still appear
- Check whether the message is a website notification. Pop-up windows and notifications use different controls. Chrome says a site’s notification permission can explain continued communications after pop-ups are disabled; Firefox manages notifications separately too.
- Consider what triggered the window. In Edge, a window that opens after you select a page button or link may be expected behavior.
- Be cautious with unexpected messages. Apple warns that deceptive pop-ups can impersonate trusted organizations, request personal or financial information, or try to get you to install unwanted software. Don’t click suspicious messages or fake close buttons; if uncertain, close the tab or window. Apple advises checking for unwanted software if pop-ups persist in Safari despite the setting.
- Check whether settings are managed or labels differ. Browser controls can vary by version, and a workplace or school administrator may manage Chrome settings.
