Where is Alibaba Cloud’s AI-focused data center?
The facility opened in Frankfurt. Alibaba Cloud’s first European data center had also been announced for Frankfurt in 2016, with the company saying it would be co-located in Vodafone Germany’s facilities. What was the Frankfurt facility designed to do?
AI Business reported that the 2022 facility was designed specifically for artificial intelligence and machine-learning applications. The report identified automotive, retail, and manufacturing as intended customer sectors. What did Alibaba report about cooling, electricity, and emissions?
- Cooling: AI Business said the site used dry coolers instead of mechanical refrigeration.
- Electricity: The 2022 report attributed to Alibaba a plan to power the facility with 100% green electricity. That figure describes the company’s stated plan, not independently measured consumption or a confirmed current operating condition.
- Carbon monitoring: Alibaba said it would use a cloud-based platform to monitor and optimize the facility’s daily carbon footprint. This, too, was a reported company commitment rather than a verified performance result.
What security and compliance claims were reported?
AI Business reported that Alibaba described the data center as meeting high security standards and complying with Germany’s Cloud Computing Compliance Controls Catalog (C5). The report also said the facility had cleared an audit under the German AI Cloud Services Compliance Criteria Catalogue. These are claims as reported in 2022; the underlying linked materials were not independently accessible for verification, so they should not be read here as independently confirmed certifications or audit results. How does the 2026 Germany expansion plan differ from the 2022 opening?
Alibaba Cloud’s September 23, 2026 announcement said it planned to expand its data-center footprint in Germany, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, France, and Hong Kong over the following 12 months. It separately said it would establish its first cloud regions in Türkiye, Finland, and the Netherlands. Alibaba Cloud also said in September 2026 that its global infrastructure comprised 107 availability zones in 31 regions. That is a global footprint figure, not a count of German data centers.
