Alibaba acquired Daraz Group in May 2018. Rocket Internet’s announcement on 8 May said the sale covered Daraz Group’s entire share capital but did not disclose a price. Alibaba later reported paying US$194 million in cash for a 100% equity interest in Daraz Singapore Private Limited.
When did Alibaba acquire Daraz?
Rocket Internet announced the acquisition on 8 May 2018. Alibaba’s FY2019 annual report records the acquisition in May 2018, so the announcement date and the reported transaction month are consistent.
Rocket Internet said Daraz would continue under the same brand after the sale. At the time, the seller described Daraz as operating in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Its announcement also cited a combined population of more than 460 million, with 60% under age 35; those are figures reported by Rocket Internet in 2018, not current demographic estimates. This does not conflict with Rocket Internet’s announcement that the amount was undisclosed: the announcement did not name a price, while Alibaba’s later filing disclosed the cash consideration.
What exactly did the deal cover?
The two companies describe the acquired interest using their own entity wording. Rocket Internet said Alibaba acquired the entire share capital of Daraz Group; Alibaba’s annual report specifies a 100% equity interest in Daraz Singapore Private Limited. Both accounts describe a full acquisition, but their differently styled corporate names should not be treated as interchangeable legal names.
Does Daraz still belong to Alibaba?
Alibaba’s FY2025 reporting includes Daraz in Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group, describing it as an ecommerce platform across South Asia and identifying Pakistan and Bangladesh as key markets. That is evidence of how Alibaba classified the business in that reporting year; it does not, by itself, establish Daraz’s exact legal ownership structure or operational status as of October 2026. Rocket Internet’s announcement attributed the following comment to its CEO, Oliver Samwer: “The sale of Daraz to Alibaba is another testament to Rocket Internet’s ability to successfully scale and exit market-leading companies”. This is Samwer’s characterization in the seller’s announcement, not independent evidence of Daraz’s market position.
