The headline’s N122.56 trillion figure cannot be confirmed from the available dated reports: they do not establish its observation date or the nine companies included. Separate 2026 snapshots do show a small group accounting for much of NGX equity market value, but their totals and company counts differ.
What the N122.56tn headline does—and does not—establish
The wording names Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, MTN and “eight others,” implying a group of nine companies. However, available reports do not verify N122.56 trillion for that group or identify the date, denominator and full constituent list behind the claim. It should therefore be treated as unverified, not as a confirmed total.
This distinction matters because market capitalisation is a dated measure: it changes with share prices and shares outstanding. A total without an observation date and a defined company set cannot be compared reliably with another snapshot.
What dated NGX reports show
Two reports provide distinct snapshots. They should not be blended: they use different dates and company counts.

| Observation date | Companies counted and selection rule | Combined value | Total NGX market value | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 31 August 2026 | Nine megacaps, each worth at least N5 trillion | N107.59 trillion | N157.74 trillion in NGX equity market capitalisation | Nairametrics |
| 10 July 2026 | Ten companies; the report’s cited figures do not establish the same N5 trillion selection rule | N112.902 trillion | N156.44 trillion in NGX market capitalisation | THISDAY, published 12 July 2026 |
The August report said the nine-company group’s combined market value increased by N46.69 trillion between 31 December 2025 and 31 August 2026. That is a change in market value, not revenue, profit or cash raised by those companies.

Market News Nigeria reported these three largest values for 31 August 2026:
- Airtel Africa: N23.68 trillion
- Dangote Cement: N17.45 trillion
- MTN Nigeria: N16.94 trillion
These are figures for that report’s August snapshot. They do not establish the other six members of the nine-company group named in the headline, nor do they verify its N122.56 trillion total. Market News Nigeria

How to read the figures
- Keep the date attached. A market-cap total describes a particular observation date; it is not a fixed valuation.
- Check the count and selection rule. Nine companies worth at least N5 trillion each is not automatically the same universe as a headline naming nine firms, and the July report counted ten.
- Keep the denominator clear. The August report specifies NGX equity market capitalisation; the July report gives total NGX market capitalisation. Their reported totals are not interchangeable.
- Do not confuse market value with business performance. Market capitalisation is a share-market valuation, not a measure of a company’s revenue, profit, assets or funds raised.
