Choose an AirTag (2nd generation) for keys, bags, and luggage when you want a round tracker with a replaceable battery and Apple’s nearby Precision Finding. Choose a Find My-compatible tracking card when a slim shape matters more than a key-ring attachment—especially in a wallet or passport holder. Card features differ by model, so check the exact product’s Apple Find My compatibility, thickness, and battery design before buying.
What is a Find My tracking card?
A Find My tracking card is a third-party, card-shaped item tracker that pairs with Apple’s Find My app. Apple supports compatible third-party accessories, but a product being called a tracker does not by itself mean it works with Apple Find My. Check the exact model’s listing and setup instructions. Apple Find My supports locating compatible accessories through its network.
Neither an AirTag nor a Find My card is a GPS tracker that continuously reports its own position. When an item is out of your iPhone’s Bluetooth range, nearby Apple devices can detect the accessory and relay an approximate location to its owner through the Find My network. That is network-assisted finding, not a guarantee that an item will always be found. Apple’s 2026 AirTag announcement describes the second-generation model’s use of the network.

Choose a card for a wallet
A card’s main advantage is fit: it lies flat in a wallet or passport holder rather than creating the round bulge of an AirTag. The trade-off is that cards vary in thickness and battery design. A rechargeable card requires periodic charging; a card with a non-replaceable battery eventually needs replacement or a manufacturer renewal option.

Choose an AirTag for keys or luggage
The AirTag’s round form works naturally with a key ring or luggage attachment, but the tracker itself does not include a key ring or luggage loop. You may need to buy a compatible holder separately. The AirTag is also the better starting point if you want Apple’s Precision Finding feature for locating an item nearby.
What AirTag adds for nearby finding
Apple says the second-generation AirTag has a speaker that is 50% louder and Precision Finding range up to 1.5 times greater than the previous generation. These are Apple’s 2026 product claims, not results from an independent comparison test. Precision Finding availability depends on a supported iPhone; check Apple’s current compatibility requirements before relying on it. Apple’s AirTag product page lists current product details.

Apple estimates that the AirTag battery lasts more than a year and says it can be replaced. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed real-world interval; use varies with conditions. The replaceable battery can be a practical advantage over cards whose batteries cannot be changed by the owner.

Check network compatibility and sharing before purchase
Some current cards offer a choice between Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. A given model may only be paired with one network at a time, so choose the ecosystem you actually use rather than assuming the same card will track through both simultaneously. Also confirm the current operating-system requirements and sharing behavior for the specific accessory: they can vary by product and software version.

Apple says AirTag is designed to track objects and describes protections that include cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers. Those safeguards do not make a tracker appropriate for tracking a person without consent, and they do not guarantee that an object can be recovered. - Pick an AirTag (2nd generation) for keys, bags, or luggage when its round form, replaceable battery, and nearby Precision Finding suit the job.
- Pick a compatible card for a wallet or passport holder when a slim profile is the priority.
- Before choosing a card, verify its exact model, Apple Find My compatibility, thickness, charging or battery replacement, and whether it can use the network you need.
