AirTag (2nd generation) is a worthwhile upgrade if you want its louder speaker, supported longer-range Precision Finding, or the ability to find it from a compatible Apple Watch. If your original AirTag works and those features do not matter to you, keep it. The new model keeps the same form factor, so compatible holders and accessories still fit. Its expanded finding range depends on your iPhone and region.
What’s new in AirTag (2nd generation)?
Apple introduced AirTag (2nd generation) on January 26, 2026. The new model uses a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and an upgraded Bluetooth chip. Its main differences from the original are longer claimed Precision Finding range, a louder speaker, and Precision Finding support on specified Apple Watch models.
| Feature | AirTag (2nd generation) | Original AirTag |
|---|---|---|
| Precision Finding range | Apple claims guidance from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous generation. This is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement. Expanded range requires supported hardware and varies by region. | Baseline for Apple’s comparison; the original does not receive the new model’s expanded-range claim. |
| Speaker | Apple says its updated internal design makes the speaker 50 percent louder and audible from up to twice as far away. These are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. | Does not have the new model’s speaker improvement. |
| Apple Watch finding | Precision Finding is supported on specified Apple Watch models, subject to software and regional availability. | Does not have the new model’s Apple Watch Precision Finding feature. |
| Shape and accessories | Same form factor; compatible existing AirTag accessories can be reused. | Original form factor. |
Apple’s launch announcement describes the feature changes and confirms compatibility with existing accessories: Apple introduces new AirTag with expanded range and improved findability.
Does the longer Precision Finding range work with your iPhone?
No—not with every iPhone. Apple Support says expanded Precision Finding works when AirTag (2nd generation) is paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. Availability also varies by region. If your iPhone is not on that supported list, do not buy the new tag on the assumption that you will get the expanded range.

Pairing requires an Apple Account and an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. Check Apple’s AirTag (2nd generation) technical specifications for current requirements.
Should you upgrade from the original AirTag?
Upgrade if you will use the new features
- You often search by sound. The louder speaker may help when an AirTag is hidden in a bag or among other belongings; the loudness and audible-distance figures are Apple’s claims, not independently verified measurements.
- You have supported hardware and want more Precision Finding range. Confirm your iPhone and region qualify before treating the expanded range as a benefit.
- You want to locate a tag from your wrist. This is useful only if you have a supported Apple Watch and meet the software and regional requirements.
- You are buying your first AirTag. The second generation is Apple’s current model and includes the listed improvements over the original.
Keep your original if it already meets your needs
If your original AirTag is working and you do not need the louder speaker, expanded-range Precision Finding on supported hardware, or Apple Watch finding, Apple’s published product information does not establish a reason to replace it. The original remains useful for finding belongings through Find My; upgrading is about the specific new capabilities, not a required replacement.

How AirTag finding and safety work
When an AirTag is outside the range of its paired iPhone, nearby Apple devices in the crowdsourced Find My network can detect it over Bluetooth and report its approximate location to its owner. Apple says Find My communications are end-to-end encrypted and location history is not physically stored on the AirTag. Anti-unwanted-tracking protections include cross-platform alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers.
AirTag is designed for tracking objects, not people or pets. Apple describes it as “designed exclusively for tracking objects” and says it offers protections against unwanted tracking. For delayed luggage, Share Item Location lets an owner temporarily share an item’s location with participating third parties, such as airlines. The owner can stop sharing, and it expires automatically after seven days. Apple says more than 50 airlines accept Share Item Location links; that figure describes participation, not a guarantee that a particular carrier or claim will recover a bag.
