AirPods Pro 3 are the clearer fit for people who use Apple devices and want Apple-specific features; Sony WF-1000XM5 is the stronger fit for mixed-device users who value multipoint and a wider codec selection, including LDAC. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish a winner for noise cancellation, sound, calls, or comfort. Because Apple sells more than one AirPods Pro generation, this comparison identifies AirPods Pro 3 where current Apple features are discussed and calls out AirPods Pro 2 where its specifications are relevant.
Which is better: AirPods Pro 3 or Sony WF-1000XM5?
There is no universal winner in the available manufacturer specifications. Choose based on how you connect and which features matter most:
- Lean toward Sony WF-1000XM5 if you regularly switch between devices or want Bluetooth multipoint and support for LDAC, alongside SBC, AAC, and LC3. Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and multipoint for this model. Sony’s WF-1000XM5 specifications describe these features.
- Lean toward AirPods Pro 3 if you mainly use Apple devices and value Apple’s listed features, including automatic switching among Apple devices. Apple’s AirPods comparison lists Pro 3 separately from Pro 2.
- For noise cancellation, sound, calls, or comfort, do not pick a winner from these spec pages alone. They do not provide a controlled comparison of these exact earbuds.
This distinction matters because “AirPods Pro” can mean different generations. Apple’s current comparison includes both AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Pro 2; their listed details are not interchangeable.
How do their noise cancellation claims compare?
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 has up to twice the active noise cancellation of the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC. That is an Apple-to-Apple comparison, not a result against Sony WF-1000XM5. Apple also cites an IEC 60268-24 test for some comparisons on its comparison page.

Sony describes WF-1000XM5 as noise-canceling earbuds and lists an ambient sound mode, but its specifications do not give a directly comparable measured result against AirPods Pro 3. These claims therefore cannot settle which pair cancels more noise in real-world use. If ANC performance is your deciding factor, look for an independent test that measures both exact models under the same conditions.
Which works better across Apple, Android, and other devices?
Sony WF-1000XM5: explicit multipoint and codec support
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3 and the SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 codecs for WF-1000XM5. It also lists multipoint, which is useful when you want earbuds connected to two devices and to switch between them. The exact experience can depend on the devices and audio settings in use; the specifications establish support, not identical behavior across every phone or computer. See Sony’s specifications and WF-1000XM5 Help Guide.

AirPods Pro: best-integrated Apple features, with basic non-Apple Bluetooth use
Apple lists automatic switching among Apple devices for AirPods. AirPods Pro can also work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality is limited. That means Android connection is possible; it does not mean Apple-specific features carry over. The qualification appears in Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 technical specifications.
Sony’s Help Guide includes an iPhone compatibility list marked “As of March 2023.” Treat it as historical documentation, not a current guarantee for every iPhone model or operating-system version.

What battery life and charging do the manufacturers list?
| Model | Published playback estimate | Charging information |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours on one charge with ANC enabled, according to Apple’s current comparison page. This is a manufacturer maximum, not an independent test. | Check Apple’s current model-specific product information for the case’s charging options. |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | Up to 8 hours with noise canceling on, or up to 12 hours with it off, as maximum continuous music playback times in Sony’s specifications. | Sony lists USB and wireless charging with the case. |
| AirPods Pro 2 | Apple lists this as a separate generation; its Pro 2 support specifications describe testing on pre-production units at 50% volume with ANC enabled and a specified playlist. Do not apply that test description or its figures to Pro 3. | Apple says the Pro 2 case is compatible with Apple Watch and Qi-certified chargers. |
The figures are not directly comparable independent test results. Sony’s Help Guide cautions that “Charging and usage hours may be different depending on the conditions of use.” Apple likewise says battery life varies with settings, environment, usage, and other factors. Refer to Sony’s Help Guide, Sony’s specifications, Apple’s comparison, and its Pro 2 technical specifications for model-specific details.
Are either pair waterproof?
No. Sony lists WF-1000XM5 as having IPX4-equivalent water resistance. Apple says AirPods Pro 2 and its case were tested to IPX4 under IEC 60529 in controlled laboratory conditions; Apple warns resistance can decrease with normal wear. An IPX4 rating is not permission to immerse either product. The Sony rating is in its specifications; Apple’s caveat is in its Pro 2 technical specifications.

What about fit, sound quality, and calls?
The manufacturer pages cited here do not provide a comparable fit, comfort, microphone, or sound-quality test for these two models. Those qualities are also sensitive to ear shape, listening preferences, and calling conditions. If one is likely to be uncomfortable or call performance is critical, prioritize a return policy and independent reviews that test AirPods Pro 3 and WF-1000XM5 directly rather than inferring a winner from codec lists or product descriptions.
