For most buyers choosing between the current models, Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the stronger all-round fit; AirPods Max 2 is the better match if you rely heavily on Apple devices. That is RTINGS’ comparative judgment, not a universal verdict. The title’s original-model names also need a generation update: Apple’s current counterpart is AirPods Max 2, and Bose’s is QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).
First, make sure you are comparing the same generation
“AirPods Max” and “Bose QuietComfort Ultra” can refer to the original headphones. Current comparison coverage instead evaluates AirPods Max 2 against Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen). The recommendation below concerns these newer models; it does not transfer original-model specifications or test results to them.
If you are shopping for the original generation, treat it as a separate comparison. Tom’s Guide’s older comparison of the originals reported $549 for AirPods Max and $429 for Bose QC Ultra, but those are figures from that comparison, not current-generation or current-market prices. Its battery, weight, Bluetooth and review-score figures likewise describe the original models only.

Why Bose is the more practical all-round choice
Comfort for longer listening
RTINGS’ current-generation summary favors the Bose headphones for comfort. That makes them the more promising choice if you often wear headphones for extended sessions, though fit is personal: head shape, clamping feel and ear-pad contact can change how comfortable either pair feels to you.

Battery claims depend on listening mode
Bose Support lists up to 30 hours per full charge for QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), and says a 15-minute charge provides up to 3 hours of playback—or up to 2 hours with Immersive Audio. Bose’s 2025 launch announcement gives additional mode conditions: up to 30 hours of playback, 23 hours with Immersive Audio on, and 45 hours with ANC turned off. These are Bose’s manufacturer claims, not independent measurements; keep the listening mode attached to each figure when comparing them.
Controls and EQ across phone platforms
RTINGS favors Bose for companion-app and EQ support on both iOS and Android. That flexibility is useful if you switch between an iPhone and an Android device, or want app-based sound adjustments without limiting the comparison to one mobile platform.

When AirPods Max 2 makes more sense
You are deeply invested in Apple devices
RTINGS considers AirPods Max 2 more compelling for buyers deeply embedded in Apple’s ecosystem. If Apple-device integration is central to how you choose and use headphones, that advantage may matter more than Bose’s strengths in comfort, battery, case and cross-platform app support.

Do not assume it wins every technical category
The current comparison supports a conditional recommendation rather than a blanket claim that AirPods Max 2 is better for noise cancellation, calls or sound quality. Those categories need generation-specific evidence and can depend on test method and listening preference; choose based on a direct comparison of the exact models you plan to buy.

Check price and fit before buying
- Compare the live price for each exact generation in your country. The legacy comparison’s original-model prices are not a reliable guide to today’s offers.
- Try the fit if possible, especially if you expect to wear the headphones for hours at a time. A reviewer’s comfort assessment cannot guarantee your personal fit.
- Think about your devices: Bose’s cited app and EQ advantage spans iOS and Android, while RTINGS’ case for AirPods Max 2 is strongest for Apple-focused buyers.
- When battery runtime matters, compare the mode you actually use. Bose’s stated figures differ with Immersive Audio and ANC settings.
