If you mean the current AirPods Max, compare AirPods Max 2—Apple’s 2026 model—with Sony’s WH-1000XM5. Both are strong noise-isolating headphones, but the available comparison does not establish a universal ANC winner. Your best choice depends on the exact AirPods Max generation, current local prices, fit, battery priorities and how you plan to use the headphones.
First, make sure you are comparing the right generations
“AirPods Max” can refer to an earlier model or to AirPods Max 2, which Apple identifies as a 2026 product. The specifications below that name AirPods Max refer specifically to AirPods Max 2; they should not be applied to an older pair. Check the model name on the product listing before comparing prices or specifications. Apple’s AirPods Max 2 specifications identify the newer generation.
Sony’s WH-1000XM5 is also not the newest model in Sony’s line-up: What Hi-Fi?’s April 29, 2026 guide includes the WH-1000XM6 alongside AirPods Max 2. That does not make the XM5 a poor choice, but it does mean buyers should compare its price with newer options available locally rather than assume it is Sony’s current flagship.
What the published specifications establish
| Consideration | AirPods Max 2 | Sony WH-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|
| Generation context | Apple product introduced in 2026. Apple Support | Older than Sony’s WH-1000XM6, listed in What Hi-Fi?’s 2026 guide. What Hi-Fi?, April 29, 2026 |
| Weight | 386.2 g (13.6 oz), according to Apple’s 2026 specifications. Apple | Not stated in the cited specifications used here. Sony UK |
| Rated battery life | Not stated in the cited AirPods Max 2 specifications used here. Apple Support | Up to 30 hours with noise cancelling on; up to 40 hours with it off. These are Sony’s rated figures, not independent test results. Sony UK |
| Noise isolation | Strong performance, according to RTINGS’ comparison updated June 15, 2026. RTINGS | Strong performance in the same comparison; its summary does not establish a decisive winner. RTINGS |
The battery figures are not a complete head-to-head: the available cited specifications do not provide a matching AirPods Max 2 figure. Likewise, weight alone cannot predict whether a particular person will find a headset comfortable.

How to choose between them
Choose AirPods Max 2 if generation certainty and weight are priorities
If you want Apple’s 2026 model, make sure the listing explicitly says AirPods Max 2 rather than simply AirPods Max. At 386.2 g, it is worth considering how much weight you are comfortable wearing, particularly for long listening sessions or travel. That number is a fit consideration, not proof that the headphones will be uncomfortable for you.
Choose the WH-1000XM5 if its rated battery life fits your routine
Sony rates the XM5 for up to 30 hours with noise cancelling enabled and up to 40 hours with it disabled. Those manufacturer-rated maximums give a useful reference if charging frequency matters to you, but they are not independent test measurements. Compare them with the official battery rating for the exact AirPods Max generation you are considering before treating battery life as a deciding advantage.

Choose by measured listening and fit, not assumed ANC superiority
RTINGS’ comparison, updated June 15, 2026, describes both as strong noise-isolation performers. That supports considering either for noisy environments, but it does not justify calling one the definitive noise-cancelling winner. If you can, try the fit and controls in person, or consult detailed tests that match your priorities—such as handling steady travel noise, voices, call quality or comfort over extended wear.

No current regional price or stock comparison is established here. Prices can vary by country, retailer and promotion, and an older-generation product may be discounted. Before buying, compare the exact AirPods Max generation and the WH-1000XM5 at local retailers; if the XM5 is close in price to Sony’s newer WH-1000XM6, include that newer model in your decision.

Which should you buy?
Buy AirPods Max 2 if you specifically want Apple’s 2026 generation and its weight is acceptable to you. Buy the WH-1000XM5 if Sony’s stated battery ratings and the price you find suit your needs. If neither generation nor the XM5’s rated battery resolves the choice, prioritize fit, controls, sound and platform features by trying both or consulting focused, model-specific tests. The evidence here supports both as capable noise-isolating options, not a single best choice for every buyer.
