AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation (ANC) to an open-ear design, making them an appealing alternative for listeners who dislike silicone ear tips. They get closer to AirPods Pro 3 in features and convenience, but not in Apple’s noise-cancellation claims: Apple says Pro 3 offer up to three times more ANC. The choice comes down to whether you value an open fit or a sealed, more noise-focused one.
What’s new and what the review suggests
Apple describes AirPods 5 as an open-ear model built around its H2 chip and redesigned multiport acoustic architecture. The feature set includes Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, next-generation Adaptive EQ, and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. Apple also advertises ANC as up to 1.5 times better than the previous generation and calls it the best ANC in an open-ear design. Those are Apple’s product claims, not independent measurements.
In an excerpt of Ketan Pratap’s NDTV review dated October 3, 2026, the reviewer describes ANC as surprisingly effective for an open fit, with clean, balanced, detailed audio and natural-feeling Transparency. The excerpt does not provide a test protocol or measured results, so these should be read as the reviewer’s impressions rather than a quantified comparison. NDTV review excerpt

These are Apple’s advertised figures and feature descriptions, not independent test results. Its comparison does not establish that every listener will perceive exactly three times the cancellation. Fit and comfort are personal: the open design avoids tip pressure, while silicone tips create a seal that can help block outside sound. If possible, try both styles before choosing.

Battery, case and durability
Case configuration changes the advertised ANC listening time. Apple lists up to four hours per charge for AirPods 5 with ANC, up to five hours per charge for the Wireless Charging Case version, and up to 22 total hours with ANC for that version. Apple says the Wireless Charging Case supports USB-C, an Apple Watch charger, and Qi charging. It also lists IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance for AirPods 5. Check the specific package and case included when buying; the case options affect charging and advertised battery duration.

Who should buy AirPods 5?
Choose AirPods 5 if you prefer an open fit
They make sense if you want Apple’s current open-ear ANC option without silicone tips, alongside Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and the other H2 features. The Wireless Charging Case version is the more flexible choice if you want the listed extra ANC listening time and multiple wireless charging options.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 if cancellation is the priority
Pro 3 are the stronger candidate if you are comfortable with silicone tips and want Apple’s higher ANC claim, longer advertised ANC listening time per charge, or its listed heart-rate and hearing-health features. Those features do not make them the right fit for everyone; comfort remains individual.
