It is broader than asking AI to draw a chart from a prompt. AI can speed up parts of the work, but a polished result is not proof that the data is represented correctly, the chart answers the right question, or the visualization is accessible.
What can AI do in data visualization?
A 2024 review by Yilin Ye and co-authors groups generative AI applications in visualization into four workflow stages. The review covers sequence, tabular, spatial, and graph data, so the field includes more than conventional charts made from spreadsheets.
| Workflow stage | What AI may help with | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Data enhancement | Preparing or augmenting data for visualization. | Whether changes preserve the source data’s meaning and integrity. |
| Visual mapping generation | Choosing or generating a visual representation, such as a chart or other mapping from data to visual marks. | Whether the selected form makes the relevant information legible and supports the intended task. |
| Stylization | Changing the visual appearance of a visualization. | Whether styling improves clarity rather than obscuring values or relationships. |
| Interaction | Supporting ways for people to explore or work with a visualization. | Whether the interaction is useful, understandable, and usable by the intended audience. |
These are categories of work, not guarantees that a particular AI system supports every stage. The review identifies evaluation, datasets, and the gap between end-to-end generative AI and visualization as continuing research challenges.
How are practitioners using AI?
The Data Visualization Society’s Data Visualization State of the Industry 2025 Report found that 58% of surveyed data visualizers said they used AI in their visualization work, 40% said they did not, and 2% were unsure. These are responses from that report’s surveyed practitioners, not a census, a global adoption estimate, or a timeless rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Among respondents who used AI, reported work included data preparation, coding help, learning and skill building, brainstorming, writing and communication, and accessibility-related tasks. Some respondents said they used AI to draft titles, descriptions, or alt text, or to find data sources and follow-up questions. Those reports show how practitioners use AI; they do not establish that any generated content is accurate or accessible without review.
How can you tell whether an AI-generated chart is good?
Judge the chart by more than its appearance. Ye and co-authors note that visualization evaluation can involve efficiency and data integrity as well as aesthetics and similarity. A chart can look professional and still distort the underlying data, make the important comparison hard to see, or fail to help someone complete the task they came to do.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check the data: Compare displayed values, labels, units, categories, and transformations with the underlying data. Investigate any omissions or unexpected changes.
- Check the visual mapping: Confirm that the chart type and visual encodings suit the question and make the relevant pattern readable.
- Check the task: Ask whether a reader can find or compare the information the visualization is meant to communicate.
- Check the presentation: Look for styling that hides distinctions, makes labels difficult to read, or otherwise interferes with interpretation.
These checks matter whether AI generated the whole chart or only assisted with data preparation, code, styling, or text. Visual polish or similarity to a reference image cannot by itself demonstrate correctness or usefulness.
Can AI make data visualizations accessible?
AI and machine learning are being studied as ways to offer people alternative ways to access and explore visualizations. A systematic literature review by Chiara Ceccarini and co-authors, published on 25 March 2026, describes a limited but growing body of work. It identifies gaps in real-world deployment, user-centered design, empirical validation, and standardized solutions.

Approaches covered in the review include:
- Converting charts into tables that can be read with a screen reader.
- Creating tactile representations or converting information to audio, including sonification.
- Answering questions about a chart or generating descriptive alt text and summaries.
- Supporting keyboard navigation.
These approaches can complement one another, but they do not serve every reader or task in the same way. A short text description, for example, does not necessarily provide the underlying data detail, nonvisual access, or interaction a person needs. Ceccarini and co-authors also identify challenges involving underrepresented visualization types and impairments, user involvement, interpretation of complex data, real-time support, benchmarks, and bias. Accessibility assistance is a developing area, not a solved feature: generated descriptions and summaries still need checking, and accessible alternatives should be evaluated with the people expected to use them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you expect from AI visualization?
Expect assistance across parts of a visualization workflow rather than automatic certainty. AI may help prepare data, suggest a visual mapping, adjust a chart’s style, or support interaction. Practitioners also report using it for coding, ideation, communication, and accessibility-related work. The evidence from the 2024 field review and 2026 accessibility review describes applications and research concerns; it does not establish that AI tools consistently produce correct, effective, or accessible visualizations.
