AI can help turn parts of a video game’s compiled code into more readable pseudocode, but it cannot reliably restore the original source project or prove that a reconstructed program behaves exactly like the game. Whether decompiling is lawful is a separate question: it depends on where you are, how you obtained and accessed the game, why you are analyzing it, what the license says, and whether you share or distribute the results.
What does decompiling a video game actually do?
Decompilation translates compiled program code into a higher-level representation. For a game, that usually means working from machine instructions or another compiled form and producing pseudocode or a reconstruction that a person can inspect. It is not a time machine for the development process: a binary does not normally contain the full original project in its original form.
Names, comments, project structure, assets, and the build pipeline may be absent, transformed, or otherwise unavailable. Even readable-looking output is an interpretation of what the binary does, not a recovered copy of the developer’s source tree.

Decompilation is not the same as recovering every game file
A game may contain several kinds of material: native compiled code, managed bytecode, scripts, and assets. Which material is being examined depends on the game and platform. Decompiling code does not, by itself, recover all of those components or recreate a complete, buildable game project.

That distinction matters when someone asks, “How do you decompile video games just in general?” There is no single method that applies to every game: the technical target, platform, and protections matter, and the output may be partial or difficult to use.
What can AI contribute?
AI can assist with making some decompiler output more readable and with refining a higher-level representation inferred from compiled code. The 2024 paper LLM4Decompile: Decompiling Binary Code with Large Language Models describes model-assisted binary-to-source recovery and evaluates its own models and benchmarks, including refinement of conventional Ghidra output. Those results concern the paper’s tested systems and benchmarks; they do not show that an arbitrary commercial game can be restored as a faithful, working project.
Conventional decompilers can produce pseudocode that is incomplete, awkward, or difficult to compile. AI may improve how understandable some output is, but a plausible explanation or cleaner-looking function is not proof that the program has been accurately reconstructed.

Three questions should be kept separate:
- Readable: Can a person make sense of the reconstructed representation?
- Compilable: Can that representation be turned into a program?
- Behaviorally equivalent: Does the reconstructed program behave like the original across relevant inputs?
Success at one standard does not establish success at the next. In particular, compiling or passing tests supplied with a program does not prove equivalence for other legitimate inputs.
A 2026 study by Chang Liu, Edward Raff, and Kristopher Micinski reported 4.9% overall behavioral divergence among candidates that passed every shipped test in the study’s evaluated systems and input corpus; it reported up to 13% divergence for one system. These are results on that paper’s evaluated corpora and systems, not a universal error rate and not a video-game-specific measurement. Its Decompile-Diverge approach uses generated drivers and expanded fuzz inputs to look for behavioral differences beyond shipped tests.
What should you expect from different technical targets?
The target determines what is being analyzed; it does not guarantee that AI can recover it. The available published results do not establish a comparative benchmark for decompiling whole games across these categories.

| Target | What the category means | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Native binary | Compiled machine code for a particular platform. | That pseudocode will reproduce the original source, build setup, or behavior. |
| Managed bytecode | Compiled code represented in a managed runtime’s format. | That the output will retain original names, comments, or project structure. |
| Scripting files | Scripts included with or used by a game; they may be compiled or otherwise packaged. | That every game exposes scripts in a form that can be recovered or edited. |
| Assets | Game content such as visual, audio, or other non-code files. | That code decompilation reconstructs or grants rights to use those materials. |
How can you evaluate a decompilation result?
Treat AI output as a hypothesis about the binary, not as ground truth. A careful analysis preserves the original file, records the assumptions behind the reconstruction, and compares the reconstructed program’s behavior with the original. Testing beyond whatever tests happen to be available is important because limited tests can miss differences on other inputs.

- Identify the material and goal. Be clear about whether you are examining code, scripts, or assets, and whether you want to understand behavior, achieve interoperability, preserve a game, or create a replacement.
- Keep the evidence distinct from the interpretation. Preserve the original binary and document which conclusions come from observed behavior versus AI-generated or conventional decompiler output.
- Check behavior, not just appearance. Compare the original and reconstructed program on relevant inputs; passing a supplied test set or compiling successfully is not, on its own, proof of equivalence.
- Set a boundary for the output. Private technical analysis, publication of derived code, and distributing a playable game are different activities, with potentially different consequences.
No representative study establishes how reliably AI can decompile complete commercial video games. Results from generic binary benchmarks should not be presented as a whole-game success rate.
Is decompiling even legal in the US?
There is no sound universal yes-or-no answer. Copyright, anti-circumvention rules, contracts, and other legal concerns are distinct. The relevant facts include whether the copy was lawfully obtained, whether access controls or encryption were bypassed, the purpose of the work, what the license or contract says, whether protected code or assets were copied, and whether the output stays private or is shared.
Copyright and circumvention are separate questions
The U.S. Copyright Office says that the DMCA “generally makes it unlawful to circumvent technological measures used to prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted works,” including video games. That statement describes the general rule, not every exception. See the Office’s 2024 Section 1201 proceeding and the statutory text of 17 U.S.C. § 1201.
Section 1201(f) contains a narrower reverse-engineering provision. It covers a person who lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a program and circumvents a measure solely to identify and analyze elements necessary for interoperability of an independently created program, subject to the statute’s conditions and limits. The statutory phrase is “sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs.” That is not blanket permission to bypass protections for any mod, preservation project, or game-related use.

Preservation exemptions are limited
The Copyright Office’s 2024 rule includes specific exemptions involving certain lawfully acquired games. One addresses restoring personal local play when the rights holder has ended required external-server authentication. Other provisions cover qualifying library, archive, or museum preservation under detailed institutional and use conditions. The current regulation, 37 CFR 201.40, sets out those limits; these provisions do not amount to blanket authorization to distribute a circumvention tool, game binary, or replacement server.

Case law does not settle every game project
The Ninth Circuit’s decision in Sega Enterprises Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc., 977 F.2d 1510 (9th Cir. 1992), is often discussed because intermediate copying to discover functional requirements for compatibility could qualify as fair use in the circumstances of that case. It is not a universal rule for every game, purpose, or jurisdiction. Contract and trade-secret issues may also matter, as summarized in Cornell Legal Information Institute’s reverse-engineering overview.

The UK has a statutory decompilation exception, but it is purpose-limited. Under section 50B of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, a lawful user may decompile a program where doing so is necessary to obtain information needed to create an independent program that interoperates with the decompiled program or another program. The permitted objective and use of the information are constrained; the exception is not a general right to reproduce protected expression or distribute a decompiled game. The text is available in the official UK legislation.
That UK rule should not be projected onto other countries. No global country-by-country rule follows from the US and UK examples here.
Why sharing or distributing results changes the analysis
Keeping a technical analysis private is not the same as publishing reconstructed code, sharing extracted assets, selling a derived product, or distributing a playable game. Those steps can introduce questions about copied protected expression, license terms, access controls, and the legal basis for the original analysis. A technical result being accurate—or AI-generated—does not itself establish permission to distribute it.
For a real project, assess the law where the work will occur and the license and access conditions attached to the specific game. If the plan involves bypassing protections, releasing derived code or assets, or distributing a replacement or playable game, get advice from a lawyer familiar with the relevant jurisdiction and facts.
