Before sending data to an AI service through a web API, establish what the service will do, what information it will handle, and what could happen if it fails. Then verify the provider’s answers against the deployed configuration, technical evidence, and contract. Review both conventional API security and AI-specific risks; a certification or general security statement alone cannot establish that a particular use is safe.

1. Define the workflow and the consequences of failure

Start with the integration you intend to deploy—not a broad description of the vendor’s platform. Record the task, the users, the API endpoints and features involved, and whether the service can call tools, access other systems, or take actions. Decide what happens if an answer is inaccurate, unsafe, delayed, or unavailable, and identify who will review consequential outputs.

Classify every kind of information that might leave your environment. Consider prompts, uploaded files, metadata, logs, user feedback, and support requests, as well as the content inside them. Public information presents a different exposure from personal information, credentials, financial or health data, contracts, intellectual property, or internal records. Set the depth of evidence and review according to both data sensitivity and the consequences of failure.

2. Trace data from collection through deletion

Ask the provider to account for each data category across its full path. The AI TrustMark supplier checklist provides a useful basis for these questions, but it does not supply answers for any particular provider. Record each answer, the evidence that supports it, the applicable contract term, and any unresolved dependency.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Collection and purpose: What is collected from prompts, files, metadata, logs, feedback, and support interactions? Why is each category needed?
  • Processing and storage: Where is each category processed and stored, including in logs and backups? Which provider personnel and subprocessors can access it, and for what purposes?
  • Retention and deletion: How long does each category persist? What process deletes it when the retention period ends or the contract terminates, and what evidence can the customer obtain?
  • Training and improvement: Is customer content used for training, fine-tuning, evaluation, or service improvement? If a setting governs this use, who controls the setting, how is its state verified, and can it change?
  • Subprocessors: Which subprocessors receive data, where are they located, and how will the provider notify customers about material changes?
  • Personal information: What roles do the parties take, and what information or assistance will the provider supply for the buyer’s privacy assessment?

Distinguish a written commitment from an operational control. For example, ask how a data-use setting is configured for your account and how that configuration is evidenced, rather than relying only on a general statement about the provider’s usual practices.

3. Assess the API across its lifecycle

AI-specific controls do not replace ordinary application, infrastructure, and supply-chain security. OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) explicitly treats those areas as parallel concerns. NIST SP 800-228, updated in March 2026, describes API risks and protections across lifecycle stages, including basic and advanced controls, with incremental adoption based on risk.

Ask the provider to explain which controls apply before deployment and at runtime, and how they fit your integration as well as the provider’s service. NIST’s guidance is a lifecycle reference, not a claim that every control applies identically to every architecture.

  • Identity and access: How are API clients authenticated? How are permissions scoped, credentials protected and rotated, and access removed when no longer needed?
  • Inputs and endpoints: How are requests validated against expected schemas and limits? Which endpoints and features are exposed to your account, and how is unnecessary exposure reduced?
  • Runtime detection: What monitoring can detect misuse or abnormal requests? What logs or alerts are available to the customer, and what visibility is retained by the provider?
  • Vulnerabilities and incidents: How are vulnerabilities reported and handled? What is the provider’s incident-response process, and how will affected customers be notified?
  • Customer-side integration: Which protections must your team implement—for example, in credential storage, access permissions, request handling, and monitoring—and which are supplied by the provider?

The UK government’s AI Cyber Security Code of Practice says organizations using an external component should conduct AI security risk assessment and due diligence, and developers offering APIs to external customers or collaborators should apply controls against attacks through those APIs. Treat this as government code guidance, and check its current version and relevance to your organization’s jurisdiction and role.

4. Ask for AI-specific evidence

Use OWASP AISVS 1.0, released by the OWASP Foundation in June 2026, to turn general assurances into testable questions. AISVS is vendor-neutral and identifies procurement and vendor evaluation as uses; it complements rather than replaces assessment of general application and infrastructure security.

Ask which requirements apply to the service and your configuration, what verification level is appropriate, and what evidence supports the answers. Depending on the system, useful evidence may include architecture details, test reports, change records, or independent assessments. Topics to consider include:

For models and components that affect your use case, ask how the provider documents selection, provenance, evaluation methods and data, update cadence, and test results. NIST IR 8596’s December 2025 initial preliminary draft discusses supplier trust, data and evaluation transparency, AI-specific due diligence, and adversarial testing. It is a draft reference, not a final set of requirements.

5. Apply privacy and domain requirements to the use case

Determine which privacy, sector, and jurisdictional requirements apply to your deployment rather than assuming one standard governs every AI API. The scope of a cited requirement matters: NIST SP 800-63-4 Digital Identity Risk Management addresses AI and machine learning used in identity systems. It says organizations using such systems should provide relying entities information about training methods, datasets, model update frequency, and testing results, and document privacy risk assessments for personal information processed by those systems. These statements should not be generalized into universal rules for unrelated AI services.

6. Compare answers using evidence and scope

When comparing providers or assessment approaches, use the same use case and data categories for each. A polished policy or certificate is difficult to evaluate if its scope does not match the endpoints, models, regions, subprocessors, and configuration you will actually use.

Review area What to compare Evidence to seek
Scope Models, endpoints, features, regions, subprocessors, and customer configurations covered Documentation that identifies the covered service and deployment scope
Data handling Permitted data uses, retention periods, access paths, and deletion commitments Configuration details and contract terms that apply to your account
Security Whether evidence is current, independent, and technically relevant to the API and its lifecycle Control records, technical details, or assessment results with clear scope
AI assurance How model changes, provenance, evaluation methods, limitations, and AI-specific testing are documented Change records, evaluation information, and relevant test evidence
Operations How incidents, vulnerabilities, model changes, service disruptions, and subprocessor changes are communicated Defined processes and applicable notification commitments
Consequence and residual risk What remains if outputs fail or the service is unavailable, and what human review or fallback is needed A deployment-specific risk decision and documented operating controls

These comparison dimensions synthesize the API, AI-security, and supplier-review guidance; they do not establish a ranking of vendors. The cited guidance supplies questions and controls, not vendor-specific answers.

7. Make the decision and record what remains unresolved

Before approval, confirm that the evidence matches the configuration you will deploy and the agreement governing your data. Document the accepted use, data categories, required controls, accountable owners, and unresolved risks. If a key answer is missing, unclear, or not reflected in the contract or configuration, treat that as an open dependency—not as proof of a protection.

  • Limit data sent to what the workflow actually needs.
  • Keep human review or a fallback for outcomes whose failure could cause meaningful harm.
  • Set conditions for reassessment when models, endpoints, data-use settings, subprocessors, or terms change.
  • Consider independent API-security or AI-assurance expertise when your team needs validation beyond the evidence the provider supplies.
