For clicking through websites or apps, look for a computer-use agent; for an explanation of one image, use a vision-capable assistant; for a clean image of a web page, use a screenshot tool. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.
What does “AI that takes screenshots” mean?
A screenshot is simply an image of what is visible on a screen. The AI may be involved in understanding that image, deciding what to do next, or neither: a conventional capture tool can take the screenshot without interpreting it at all.
- Screen capture: Produces an image or PDF of a screen or web page. It may have no AI features.
- Screenshot understanding: Receives an image and answers questions about visible content, such as identifying a button or summarizing a chart. That alone does not mean it can click or type.
- Computer-use agent: Observes screenshots, proposes actions such as clicking or typing, and relies on an application to execute them and provide another screenshot. This is the closest match when you want AI to operate a computer.
Some products combine these capabilities, but the documented tools discussed here are principally computer-use systems or a Windows screen feature. For a basic one-off screen question, you may not need an agent. For multi-step control, you do.
How screenshot-driven computer use works
In a computer-use system, the model generally does not take over your computer by itself. The developer or host application provides a screenshot and task, receives a suggested action, executes that action in an environment it controls, and captures the next screenshot. The process repeats until the task is complete or the application stops it.

- Observe: The application supplies a screenshot of a browser, desktop, or other supported environment.
- Decide: The model interprets the visible interface and returns an action, such as a click, text entry, scroll, or key press.
- Execute: The application applies the action in the controlled environment. It should validate risky actions rather than blindly run every suggestion.
- Verify: The application captures a new screenshot and checks whether the intended result occurred. It can then continue, ask for human input, or stop.
Google’s Gemini API documentation describes this loop for browser, mobile, and desktop environments; Meta’s Model API documentation likewise describes an observe-and-act cycle using screenshots and structured mouse or keyboard actions. Anthropic documents screenshot, click, type, and zoom tools for an application to implement. Microsoft Foundry describes an agent tool that proposes interface actions from screenshots. Their capabilities, environments, and availability are not identical, and the cited materials do not establish a shared performance benchmark or full price comparison.

For a developer choosing an agent, compare the actual target environment (browser, desktop, or mobile), how screenshots and inputs are handled, the effort required to build the execution loop, and whether a person will supervise consequential actions. A preview capability should not be treated as a stable, generally available feature.
Documented options and their boundaries
Google Gemini API Computer Use
Google documents a developer-built screenshot/action loop for browser, mobile, and desktop environments. The documentation marks Computer Use as a preview capability and warns that it may make errors or contain security vulnerabilities. Google advises close supervision for important tasks and recommends avoiding critical decisions, sensitive data, and tasks where serious mistakes cannot be corrected. Anthropic Claude Computer Use
Anthropic describes a developer-enabled capability for interpreting screen content and interacting through cursor movement, clicks, and text input. The platform documentation covers tools including screenshot, click, type, and zoom, with the application implementing operations in its environment. It also documents screenshot scanning for prompt injection. The feature is not the same as a general promise that Claude can directly control every user’s computer: Anthropic’s computer-use tool documentation.

For commercial products described in Anthropic’s privacy page, the company says screenshots and inputs/outputs are processed and screenshots are deleted from its backend within 30 days by default, subject to exceptions and different agreed terms. That statement is specific to the commercial products and terms covered on that page, not all Claude plans or other providers: Anthropic’s Computer Use data-handling information.
Microsoft Foundry computer-use tool
Microsoft documents a preview agent tool that interprets screenshots and proposes actions such as clicking, typing, and scrolling. Microsoft explicitly warns of security and privacy risks, including prompt injection. Preview status and availability can change, so confirm the current state and requirements in Microsoft’s Foundry computer-use documentation.
Meta Model API computer-use agent
Meta’s developer documentation describes an observe-act loop in which an agent receives a screenshot, returns structured mouse and keyboard actions, and the application executes them before supplying another screenshot. Windows Click to Do
Click to Do is a Windows feature, not the same kind of developer API agent. Microsoft says it identifies text and images on screen and performs screenshot analysis locally on the device. Microsoft’s support page says Snipping Tool version 11.2411.20.0 or later is needed to display the Click to Do entry point from Snipping Tool. That version requirement is for that entry point; it does not by itself establish that the feature is available on every device or in every region. Build or use an agent safely
A model’s suggested click or keystroke is not a guarantee that the action is safe or correct. A visible page can contain misleading instructions, and a mistaken click can have consequences beyond the screenshot. Keep control of the environment and design explicit safeguards around actions.
- Use a controlled environment: Run the agent in a browser or desktop environment whose permissions and data you understand, rather than granting broad access by default.
- Require confirmation for consequential actions: Consider approval gates for sending messages, submitting forms, making purchases, changing account settings, or deleting data.
- Treat visible instructions as untrusted: A page or document may contain hostile instructions intended to influence the model. Microsoft and Anthropic document prompt-injection concerns; Anthropic also describes screenshot scanning.
- Limit sensitive content: Screenshots can expose anything visible, including names, account details, messages, and confidential work. Review provider-specific data handling, retention, and terms before sending screenshots.
- Verify outcomes and provide a stop path: Check what changed after each important action. Stop or ask a person when the screen is unexpected, the model is uncertain, or recovery would be difficult.
Google’s guidance is particularly explicit for its preview capability: supervise closely for important tasks and avoid sensitive data or critical decisions. Microsoft describes significant security and privacy risks for its computer-use tool. Treat these as practical design constraints, not warnings that can be solved merely by asking the model to be careful.

Common implementation and selection problems
“It describes the screen but does not click anything”
You may be using screenshot understanding rather than computer use. Image interpretation produces an answer about visible content; computer-use capability additionally requires an action interface and an application that executes the returned operation. Confirm that both parts exist in the product and environment you selected.
“The agent clicked the wrong thing”
Screenshot interpretation can be mistaken, and interface layouts can change. Keep actions reversible where possible, inspect a fresh screenshot after changes, and gate consequential actions behind human confirmation. Do not rely on the model to self-certify an action as safe.
“The agent followed instructions on the page”
Visible content can contain prompt injection: text designed to redirect an agent. Treat page content as untrusted input, constrain what the agent can do, and require approval before sensitive operations. Anthropic documents screenshot scanning, but no cited source establishes that any protection eliminates the risk.
“The feature is missing or behaves differently”
Check whether the option is a preview, whether your chosen platform and account can access it, and whether the current documentation lists additional setup. For Windows Click to Do, check device and regional availability; the Snipping Tool version requirement applies to its entry point from Snipping Tool, not every possible launch path.
“I am not sure whether sending the screenshot is acceptable”
Assume the image may include all visible information. Review the applicable provider’s terms and data-handling documentation, minimize what is shown, and avoid sending sensitive material unless the controls and terms meet your requirements. Retention terms for one provider or product should not be generalized to another.
