Neither is automatically better. For remembering facts, terms, and vocabulary, flashcards work well when they make you retrieve answers and revisit them over time. AI study apps can make it quicker to turn notes and documents into practice material, but generated summaries or quizzes do not guarantee learning. Choose based on the study behavior you need: consistent recall and review, faster preparation, or both.

What matters more than the app category

Learning depends less on whether an app advertises AI and more on what you do with it. Trying to recall an answer before seeing it is different from rereading a summary or studying a question beside its answer. Returning to material after time has passed adds another useful part of the process.

A 2025 Learning and Instruction paper reported three experiments on retrieval practice and learning complex concepts. In its first experiment, 309 participants were assigned to short-answer quizzes with feedback, multiple-choice quizzes with feedback, restudy, or studying quiz questions with answers. In Experiments 2 and 3, involving 158 and 255 participants, learners completed three rounds of retrieval practice before a test one week later. The authors reported stronger performance on application questions for retrieval than for restudy (d = 0.511) and than for studying quiz questions with answers (d = 0.407). These are findings from those experiments, not a universal estimate for every learner or app. Read the 2025 study.

That evidence supports comparing apps by whether they prompt genuine recall, provide useful feedback, and bring material back for later review—not by the presence of AI alone.

When flashcard apps are the better fit

Flashcards suit knowledge that can be tested with a focused prompt and a reasonably clear answer: vocabulary, dates, definitions, formulas, and prerequisite concepts. A good card asks you to produce an answer before revealing it. A review system can then bring material back on a schedule, especially when you have a growing set of facts to maintain.

Anki’s official product page describes a workflow in which learners rate how well they recalled a card and the app schedules its next review for a time when they are likely to forget it. It supports audio, images, video, scientific markup, custom card layouts, and synchronization through AnkiWeb. The page listed desktop version 26.09.3 on October 4, 2026; it identifies the computer version as free, AnkiMobile as the official iOS client, and AnkiDroid as a free Android app developed by contributors. Check the Anki site for current versions, availability, and pricing, which can change.

One 2023 cohort-control study at a single US medical school followed first-year students during the 2021–2022 academic year. Of 130 students enrolled in an Anki training program, 78 reported using Anki for at least one exam and 52 did not use it for an exam. Anki users scored higher on four reported exams: 6.4%, 6.2%, 7.0%, and 12.9%, respectively. The authors concluded that Anki usage “may be associated” with increased standardized examination scores. Because students were not randomly assigned to use Anki, the differences do not prove that the app caused higher scores. The authors also noted limits to generalizing from one school, and reported little correlation between specific usage statistics and performance. Read the Anki cohort study.

Where cards stop being enough

A card can help you remember a principle without teaching you to apply it in an unfamiliar situation. For problem solving, use cards for prerequisite facts, then work through examples and practice applying ideas to new questions. Cards can include richer media, but format alone does not turn them into a complete method for learning complex application.

When an AI study app is the better fit

AI study tools can reduce the work of converting selected notes or documents into study materials. Google’s November 6, 2025 announcement for the NotebookLM app described creating flashcards and quizzes from sources, selecting topics and difficulty, choosing the number of cards or questions, and temporarily selecting or unselecting sources while chatting or generating outputs. Those are feature claims, not evidence that the app improves retention or outperforms a dedicated review system. See Google’s NotebookLM announcement.

Generated questions and answers are drafts: check them against your course notes or textbook, correct mistakes, and edit vague or overly broad prompts. Then make sure you actually attempt to answer before revealing the result. Saving preparation time is useful only if the resulting practice is accurate and you spend the time studying rather than merely collecting summaries.

24 Double-Sided ADHD Therapy Tools & Coping Skills Cards for Adults & Teens – Executive Function, Anxiety Relief & ADHD Organization – Portable Flashcards with Digital App Suggestions
  • COMPREHENSIVE DOUBLE-SIDED CONTENT STRATEGY – Every card utilizes both front and back surfaces to provide a complete cognitive framework. The front delivers clear, actionable steps ("How to Do It") and "Pro-Tips" for immediate execution, while the back dives deeper into "When to Use" and the psychology of "Why It Works." This full-context approach helps users understand their brain mechanics while taking action.
  • PORTABLE "ON-THE-GO" DESIGN WITH BINDER RING – Designed for real-world accessibility, each card features a pre-punched hole and includes a sturdy metal ring. Instead of keeping your tools hidden in a box, you can curate a personalized set of daily strategies to clip onto a backpack, keychain, or planner. This visual accessibility ensures your coping skills are always within reach whenever anxiety or distraction strikes.
  • INNOVATIVE APP INTEGRATION ON EVERY CARD – We bridge the gap between analog tools and digital efficiency. Each card features a curated "App Suggestion" specific to that coping skill (e.g., recommending a specific timer app for Time Blocking). This modern feature maximizes effectiveness by pairing physical cues with the best digital technology available to support your workflow.
  • ADHD ORGANIZATION & EXECUTIVE FUNCTION TOOLS – Acting as a portable ADHD organization product for your brain, this deck targets executive dysfunction head-on. Essential skills like "The Focus Block Method" and "Task Chunking" help externalize time management and reduce decision fatigue. These visual aids trigger dopamine release, turning overwhelming chaos into structured, manageable achievements.
  • VERSATILE MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE FOR ADULTS & TEENS – Scientifically grounded and visually engaging, these flashcards are ideal for self-improvement, school counseling, or therapy sessions. Whether used by a student to manage study stress or a professional to boost productivity, this toolkit offers structured support to regulate emotions and master daily tasks.

The categories can overlap. An AI workspace may generate flashcards and quizzes, while a dedicated flashcard app may provide the repeated review workflow. The practical choice is often whether you need help creating practice material, managing it over time, or both.

How to compare apps for your study routine

  • Retrieval: Does the app ask you to recall an answer before showing it, or does it mainly present summaries and answers to reread?
  • Spacing: Does it bring difficult material back after a delay and support continued reviews over weeks?
  • Source checking: Can you connect AI-generated items to chosen course materials, verify them, and edit errors?
  • Learning target: Are you learning discrete facts, or do you also need to explain, solve, and transfer concepts to new situations?
  • Preparation effort: Does generation save enough time to matter, and will you use some of that time to check the output?
  • Routine and usability: Which tool makes accurate, regular practice easiest for you to sustain? Reminders, streaks, and time in an app are not the same as retention.
  • Practical fit: Check current platform support, sync, offline access, cost, and options for exporting or moving your material before committing.

A 2024 npj Science of Learning study of 85 lower-secondary students using a vocabulary app described smartphone study reminders as a double-edged sword. Treat prompts and engagement features as aids to a routine, not as proof that learning is taking place. Read the reminders study.

Should you use an AI study app or Anki?

  • Use a dedicated flashcard workflow if you need to retain a growing set of terms or facts and are willing to curate concise, accurate cards and review them regularly.
  • Use an AI study workspace if turning a large set of notes, documents, or class sources into initial practice questions is your main bottleneck. Verify generated content before relying on it.
  • Combine them if AI can make a useful first draft and a spaced-review system can handle continued recall. Check each card for ambiguity, factual errors, and answers that try to cover too much.
  • Add application practice for material that requires problem solving or transfer. Use cards for prerequisite knowledge, then practice explaining ideas and applying them in new contexts.

What the available studies do—and do not—show

Studies in this area examine different questions, so their results should not be treated as a direct contest between current AI study apps and dedicated flashcard apps. A 2024 PubMed record identifies a randomized controlled trial of a mobile spaced-repetition flashcard app among dental students, but the record available at that link does not provide enough outcome detail to report a result or effect size. See the dental-student trial record.

A separate 2024 study compared digital flashcards on computers and smartphones with paper flashcards for academic vocabulary learning among Iranian undergraduates. That comparison makes study format a relevant question, but the available result details do not establish which format performed better. See the vocabulary study.

The evidence cited here supports retrieval practice as a learning mechanism and describes tools that can help learners create or schedule practice. It does not establish that modern AI study apps, as a category, improve delayed retention or transfer more than well-curated flashcards reviewed over time.
