The clearest 2026 picture is that AI adoption is growing, but the reported rate depends heavily on who or what is being counted. U.S. firm surveys, worker-level estimates and global generative AI estimates measure different things; market totals and energy projections are forecasts, not final outcomes. The available evidence supports the trends and figures below, but does not establish a complete, verified list of 47 statistics.

How to read AI statistics for 2026

Before comparing percentages, check the population, unit, scope and time period. A firm-weighted adoption rate answers a different question from the share of workers employed at firms that use AI. “Any AI,” generative AI, large language models (LLMs), use in a business function and use for a work task are also distinct measures.

The sources below include survey estimates, observed energy use, forecasts and external estimates. Those labels matter: for example, Gartner’s 2026 spending figures are forecasts, while the International Energy Agency’s figures for electricity use in 2025 describe reported growth. Federal Reserve analysis notes that survey design and definitions help explain why U.S. adoption estimates vary.

What U.S. adoption surveys say

Several measures provide a useful view of adoption, as long as their denominators and definitions stay attached to the figures.

Measure Reported result Population and period Source
Firms using AI 18% U.S. firms; year-end 2025 Federal Reserve summary of Census BTOS
Firms using AI in a business function 18% firm-weighted; 32% employment-weighted U.S. businesses; Census AI supplement reference period November 2025–January 2026 U.S. Census Bureau
Firms reporting workers use AI in work-related tasks 23% firm-weighted; 41% employment-weighted U.S. businesses; Census AI supplement U.S. Census Bureau
Workers employed at firms reporting AI adoption 78%; LLM adoption was 54% Employment-weighted estimate from the November 2025 Atlanta Fed Survey of Business Uncertainty Federal Reserve summary
Individuals reporting work-related generative AI use About 41% November 2025 Real-Time Population Survey Federal Reserve summary

Why the estimates differ

The 18% Census firm estimate and the 78% Atlanta Fed employment-weighted estimate are not competing answers to the same question. One counts firms; the other estimates the share of workers employed at firms reporting adoption. The individual-use survey asks whether people themselves used generative AI for work. Survey wording, respondent type, weighting and the definition of AI all affect the result.

How widely businesses use AI

Adoption does not necessarily mean that AI is embedded across an organization. Census data for November 2025 through January 2026 found that among firms using AI, 57% used it in three or fewer business functions. Among firms using AI, the functions most often named were:

  • Sales and marketing: 52%.
  • Strategy and business development: 45%.
  • Information technology: 41%.

These percentages describe the distribution of functions reported by AI-using firms, not the percentage of all U.S. firms using AI in each function. In the same Census supplement, firms expected AI use in a business function to reach 22% within six months; this is an expectation, not a later observed adoption rate.

Work tasks, augmentation and employment

Writing, document analysis and information search led reported generative AI task uses in the Census supplement. Among firms reporting workers’ AI use in work-related tasks, 65% limited use to three or fewer tasks. Census researchers found that 66% of users relied on AI solely to augment tasks. AI-related employment decreases were reported by 2% of firms in the supplement. These are survey findings, not proof that AI cannot displace work or that augmentation will remain the dominant pattern.

The Census analysis also found a positive correlation between broader AI integration and commercial performance. That relationship does not establish that AI caused better performance; firms that integrate AI more broadly may differ in other ways. The analysis reported differing relationships between kinds of AI integration and employment decreases.

AI spending and market forecasts

Gartner’s 2026 figures cover different market scopes. The broad total includes multiple AI spending categories; the models-and-platforms figure is a narrower end-user spending market. They should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.

Market measure 2026 figure How to interpret it
Worldwide AI spending $2.7 trillion; 49.5% year-over-year growth Gartner forecast published September 16, 2026; forecast, not final measured spending
AI infrastructure $1,484,397 million Gartner’s September 2026 forecast table segment
AI software $461,637 million Gartner’s September 2026 forecast table segment
Worldwide end-user spending on AI models and platforms $64.252 billion; 63.4% growth from 2025 Gartner forecast published July 20, 2026; a narrower category than total AI spending
Generative AI models 117% growth Gartner’s July 2026 forecast for 2026
Domain-specific and specialized generative AI models 210% growth Gartner’s July 2026 forecast for 2026

Gartner analyst John-David Lovelock described the data-center buildout as “the largest infrastructure project humanity has even undertaken.” That is Gartner’s characterization of the infrastructure expansion, not a measured spending category or an independent comparison.

Investment and the U.S. economy

The International Monetary Fund’s 2026 annual report page estimates AI-related technology investment added 0.5 percentage point to U.S. GDP growth in 2025. The same page says private-sector-driven global AI investment could exceed $2 trillion in 2026, attributing that figure to external estimates. The GDP-growth estimate and the global investment figure describe different quantities and have different attribution.

Global generative AI diffusion

Microsoft’s AI Economy Institute estimated that generative AI was used by 17.8% of the global population in the first quarter of 2026. Its regional estimates were 27.5% in the Global North and 15.4% in the Global South. These are Microsoft estimates based on its methodology, not a census of all AI use.

From the second half of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026, Microsoft reported increases of 2.8 percentage points in the Global North and 1.3 percentage points in the Global South. The report links the uneven diffusion to differences in electricity access, internet connectivity and digital skills. These regional estimates concern generative AI use and should not be compared directly with U.S. firm adoption rates.

AI, data centers and electricity

The International Energy Agency reported that data-center electricity demand grew 17% in 2025, while electricity consumption from AI-focused data centers grew 50% that year. The measures have different scopes: AI-focused facilities are a subset of data centers.

Demand outlook and investment

In the IEA’s central projection, total data-center electricity consumption rises from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030—roughly double, and around 3% of projected global electricity demand in 2030. The 2030 figure is a projection, not observed consumption.

The IEA also reported that capital expenditure by five large technology companies exceeded $400 billion in 2025 and was expected to rise a further 75% in 2026. The 2026 increase is an estimate, not a completed-year total.

Why one energy-per-query number can mislead

The IEA says energy per individual AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years. At the same time, workload matters: video generation, reasoning and agentic tasks can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. A single universal energy figure per AI query would conceal these large differences in task complexity.

What the evidence says about business outcomes

A 2026 U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis paper describes a changing pattern in business expectations: AI adoption initially grew more slowly than expected, then faster than expected for a short period, and more recently tracked expectations more closely. The paper finds some evidence linking adoption motivations with changes in production processes and increased research-and-development intensity, but says the connection to observed outcomes remains unclear.

Taken together, the available evidence documents rising use, substantial projected investment and increasing infrastructure demand. It does not establish a single global adoption rate, prove that AI caused improved commercial performance, or show that adoption automatically produces productivity gains. Those conclusions require measures and causal evidence beyond adoption counts and spending forecasts.
