AI is already used in automotive factories, driver-assistance systems, vehicle software, and in-car features. But “real-world” does not always mean widely deployed: these 16 examples range from series-production systems and customer-used assistance to pilots, tests, prototypes, and announced future plans.
How to read these examples
Automakers and technology vendors describe most of the cases below, so their reported results should be understood as company claims rather than independent performance assessments. The stage matters: a production system or customer-used feature is different from a pilot, test fleet, prototype, or planned launch. Driver assistance also is not the same as autonomous driving; the systems described here require human oversight or are still being developed.
16 real automotive AI applications
1. Audi EC4P: coordinating production systems
Application: Cloud-based production systems. Stage and setting: Audi says EC4P is used in large-scale series production for body-shop work on the A5 and A6 at its Neckarsulm plant. The company describes it as a platform for coordinating production systems, rather than a single inspection model or robot.

Application: Real-time process monitoring and early anomaly detection. Stage and setting: Audi described two paint-shop use cases as pilots, with series introduction planned for the second quarter of 2026. That was a target, not confirmation that the rollout occurred; the source does not establish a later status.

Application: AI-supported operation of production dryers. Stage and setting: Audi said it was testing the approach in series production at Neckarsulm and planned to measure energy savings through summer 2026. The cited account does not report a measured savings result.
4. Volkswagen KI4UPS: helping assembly teams find electronics issues
Application: Assembly software that helps teams identify potential vehicle-electronics problems more quickly. Stage and setting: Volkswagen describes KI4UPS as deployed support for assembly teams and says it reduces manual workload. The company account does not give a quantified reduction or identify a particular plant-wide performance figure.
5. Volkswagen image analysis: checking build configuration
Application: Real-time image analysis to check whether installed components match a vehicle’s configuration. Stage and setting: Volkswagen describes use at its Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt plants. This is a factory quality and configuration check, not an in-vehicle perception system.

6. BMW Figure 02: a humanoid robot on production work
Application: Repetitive, precise production tasks. Stage and setting: BMW’s 2026 source page describes a 2025 pilot at its Spartanburg plant in the United States. BMW says the pilot supported production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles within ten months. That is the automaker’s account of the pilot, not an independently measured productivity result.
7. BMW and Hexagon AEON: testing another factory humanoid
Application: Humanoid robotics for manufacturing work. Stage and setting: BMW says AEON had a test deployment at Leipzig in December 2025. The planned testing and pilot work was to examine battery assembly and component manufacturing; the cited account does not establish that these use cases reached series production.
8. GM Super Cruise: customer-used driver assistance
Application: Hands-free driver assistance on compatible roads and vehicles. Stage and setting: On April 28, 2026, General Motors reported 1 billion hands-free miles across nearly 750,000 enabled vehicles and 23 North American models. Super Cruise remains a driver-assistance system: GM says drivers must pay attention, and use is subject to an active plan or trial under GM’s terms. GM said eyes-off capability was planned for 2028; that future plan should not be confused with current Super Cruise capability.

9. BMW and Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride AD: assisted-driving development
Application: AI-based assisted driving. Stage and setting: Qualcomm describes joint development with BMW and a system demonstrated as a safety-critical feature for Neue Klasse vehicles, with the iX3 debut at IAA Mobility 2025. This is a supplier account of a developed and demonstrated system; it does not by itself establish broad customer deployment or autonomous operation.

Application: Localized driver assistance. Stage and setting: BMW reported road tests and virtual simulations across four Chinese innovation sites in 2025. The company said the system was expected in the China-specific iX3 in 2026. The cited announcement establishes the expectation, not that the launch was completed.
11. Nissan and Wayve: embodied-AI ProPILOT
Application: An embodied-AI approach to driver assistance. Stage and setting: Nissan reported a prototype in September 2025 and planned to introduce the technology in a first mass-produced model in Japan in fiscal year 2027. It is a development program, not a currently customer-deployed feature.

12. Woven by Toyota: suggesting fixes for code errors
Application: Generative-AI assistance for automotive software compliance work. Stage and setting: Microsoft’s 2025 customer story says a multi-agent system used to assist MISRA-related code remediation suggested fixes for around 80 percent of coding errors. That percentage is Microsoft’s reported customer-story result, not an independently validated success rate or a claim that the system automatically fixed every error.
13. Volkswagen and Bosch-CARIAD: a Level 2 driving stack
Application: A driver-assistance software stack. Stage and setting: Volkswagen says the Bosch-CARIAD stack had been deployed in a test fleet and refined. The cited ID.EVERY1 production example was planned for 2027, so it is not evidence of a current customer rollout. Volkswagen describes the system as Level 2 assistance, not autonomous driving.

14. Hyundai Gleo AI: generative AI in the car
Application: In-vehicle AI and infotainment. Stage and setting: Hyundai’s 2026 investor-day page says the refreshed Grandeur applies Pleos Connect and Gleo AI. Hyundai also says vehicle data can be used to improve features and return updates over the air. The account describes the product and its intended data feedback loop but does not quantify the resulting improvement.

15. Hyundai RMAC: training and verifying manufacturing robots
Application: Preparing AI robots for manufacturing work. Stage and setting: Hyundai says its Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) trains and verifies manufacturing AI robots. This is distinct from a specific robot’s factory rollout: Hyundai’s Atlas deployment at HMGMA was planned to begin from 2028, not reported as already underway.
16. Audi México Production Reports: making plant data visible
Application: AI-supported production reporting for management. Stage and setting: Audi says the tool displays real-time plant figures for managers at its San José Chiapa site in Mexico. The company account establishes the reporting use case but does not state a quantified operational result.

What these cases show about automotive AI
- It extends beyond the vehicle. AI applications in this set include factory monitoring and inspection, production software, robotics, code remediation, and driver assistance, as well as an in-car AI feature.
- Maturity differs by application. Audi describes EC4P as used in series production, GM reports substantial customer use of Super Cruise, and BMW reports both a production-supporting robot pilot and a separate robot test deployment. Several driving systems, by contrast, were still in development or tied to future plans in the cited accounts.
- Human responsibility remains important. The driver-assistance examples should not be read as permission to stop supervising the vehicle. In factories and software workflows, the described systems support processes or suggest actions; the cited accounts do not establish that human review is unnecessary.
- Reported outcomes need attribution. The X3 production figure comes from BMW’s description of its Figure 02 pilot, and the coding-error figure comes from Microsoft’s customer story about Woven by Toyota. Neither is an industry-wide benchmark.
