You can create an AI-generated 3D model from a text prompt, an image, or—in some tools—both together. The result is a starting asset, not a guarantee of an exact reconstruction or a ready-to-use model. Choose the intended destination first, then check the model’s shape, surfaces, editability, and file compatibility before using it.
What AI-generated 3D models can—and cannot—do
Text-to-3D lets you describe an object in words; image-to-3D uses a reference image to guide its appearance. Some tools accept text and an image together, allowing the text to specify details that the image does not show. Meshy documents these workflows in its 3D generation documentation, while Spline documents text, image, and combined input in its AI 3D generation guide.
These inputs communicate the desired shape and style; they do not ensure precise reconstruction. A single image also cannot show every side of an object, so inspect the generated model from multiple angles rather than assuming unseen details are accurate.
Use generation to make a concept, visual asset, or editable starting point. Whether it is suitable for a game, AR/VR scene, design workflow, or 3D print depends on the geometry and the requirements of the destination application.

How to create an AI-generated 3D model
1. Decide where the model will be used
Before prompting, identify the target: a visual concept, game or real-time asset, AR/VR object, design reference, or physical print. The use determines how much geometric detail, texture, optimization, and downstream editing you may need. Meshy describes workflows spanning games, AR/VR, design, and 3D printing in its documentation.
2. Choose text, image, or combined input
Use text when you can describe the subject and its style clearly. Use an image when a reference communicates the appearance better than words. If the tool supports both, text can call out features the image does not reveal, such as material or a detail on the hidden side.

Make the brief concrete: name one subject, describe its silhouette and essential features, specify the visual style, and provide a clear reference when details matter. Spline recommends focusing on a single object rather than a whole composition, using a close-up for fine detail, and avoiding expectations of high precision for forms with very sharp edges. Organic shapes may be a better fit for the guidance in that documentation.
3. Generate candidates, then inspect the geometry
Do not choose only by a polished preview. Rotate each candidate and assess its outline, proportions, and visible defects. Hide or reduce texture and color so surface treatment does not distract from the shape. Spline offers wireframe and Clay checks and specifically cautions that texture can conceal an uneven shape. Also view the asset under different lighting or in another environment: a preview’s lighting may not match the eventual scene.

4. Refine for the destination
Determine whether the model needs mesh edits, remeshing, material changes, texture work, or optimization in a downstream 3D application. Meshy documents texturing and remeshing functions, but the amount of correction a particular result needs depends on the asset and its intended use. Consider editability as part of the decision: a visually appealing model is less useful if its geometry is impractical to adjust in your workflow.
5. Export and verify it in the target application

Judge the model against the task rather than a single overall “quality” label. A 2023 survey of 3D generation research discusses fidelity, efficiency, consistency, controllability, diversity, and applicability as evaluation dimensions. They provide a useful set of questions for a practical review, but the survey is not a current head-to-head benchmark of commercial tools.

- Input fit: Does the tool support the input you have—text, an image, or both?
- Shape and fidelity: Does the silhouette match the brief? Are proportions, important details, and the overall form good enough for the destination?
- Surface appearance: Do materials and textures look appropriate when assessed separately from the underlying geometry?
- Consistency and controllability: Can you get plausible variations, and can you guide the output toward the features that matter?
- Diversity: Are alternatives meaningfully different when you need options, or does the tool keep producing similar results?
- Workflow compatibility: Can the target application import the export with the needed geometry and surface information?
- Editability and effort: Can you make required changes with tools and skills available in your workflow?
- Efficiency and applicability: Is the time and correction effort reasonable for the specific task? Speed alone does not establish quality.
A 2023 Autodesk Research paper described challenges of that period’s text-to-3D systems, including fidelity, diversity, stylistic range, and the difficulty of editing generated representations or fitting them into familiar CAD workflows. Treat those findings as historical context, not as a verified description of every current tool.
Can you use an AI-generated model for 3D printing?
Potentially, but exporting a model as STL or 3MF does not prove that it is printable. Meshy describes STL as geometry-only and 3MF as an option for color printing; what works in practice also depends on the mesh, slicer, printer, and print settings.
- Check that the model’s scale is correct in the slicer.
- Inspect geometry integrity and look for defects that could prevent a usable print.
- Confirm that walls and small features suit the printer and material you intend to use.
- Review required supports and inspect the slicer’s layer preview before printing.
- If color matters, verify that the export, slicer, and printer workflow preserve the relevant color information.
These are validation checks, not a certification of the generated mesh. Test the file in your slicer before committing to a physical print.
Limits to keep in mind
Spline’s documentation describes AI 3D generation as developing technology and notes that bugs and issues can occur, which is why it recommends inspecting the result instead of trusting its preview alone. The 2023 research publications likewise describe challenges observed at that time; they do not establish a present-day ranking or performance level for current commercial products.
