“AI for everything: 10 Breakthrough Technologies 2024” is MIT Technology Review’s account of generative AI moving into familiar search, office, image-making and smartphone-photo tools. Published on January 19, 2024, it captures the rapid product announcements of 2023–24—not a survey of AI products or adoption in 2026.
What “AI for everything” means
Will Douglas Heaven’s article describes generative AI spreading across products people already use, rather than focusing on one model or device. Chatbots were being connected to search; office-software vendors were promoting assistants for routine work; and image-generation and photo-editing features were appearing in consumer tools. The examples illustrate the breadth of the product push, not a ranking of technologies or an independent evaluation of their performance.
The feature was part of MIT Technology Review’s annual package of ten technologies. In its January 8, 2024 announcement, the publisher called that edition the 23rd annual list and described the selections as advances editors predicted could fundamentally change how people live and work. MIT Technology Review’s list announcement also says a version of the package appeared in the January/February Innovation issue.

Taken together, the examples span text and search tasks as well as image and photo tasks, for consumers and workers. Heaven’s article is useful as a snapshot of what companies were bringing forward then; its examples should not be mistaken for evidence that every feature worked equally well or had broad adoption.

Why editors selected these technologies
MIT Technology Review executive editor Amy Nordrum said the list was an attempt to “sum up which technologies matter most, right now.” She said the editors tried to ground selections in what was “scientifically possible and economically viable” and looked for advances that could have a real impact. Those are the editors’ stated selection criteria, not a claim that every featured technology had already delivered such an impact.
The annual list is therefore an editorial forecast as well as a record of developments. Its ten items reflect what the publication’s editors judged significant at the time, rather than a comprehensive inventory or a measured ranking of technologies.

What the article says—and does not establish—about AI’s impact
Heaven portrayed 2023 as the year billions of people began paying attention to AI, but the feature provides no methodology for that characterization. It should not be treated as a measured adoption statistic. The article’s more durable point is the contrast between the speed of consumer-product releases and the uncertainty about their effects: it says people had not yet begun to understand the full consequences.
The feature also floated the possibility that AI’s momentum was slowing because each new release seemed less surprising than the last. That observation sits alongside its account of fast commercialization; it is not evidence that development, use or investment had stopped. Both judgments belong to the article’s January 2024 perspective.
