Generative AI is changing many jobs by making some tasks faster or easier—not by automatically eliminating the occupations that contain them. The distinction matters: estimates of AI exposure describe work that could be affected, not a count of jobs that will disappear. Whether saved time leads to different tasks, more output, or fewer staff depends on what people and employers do next.
What does AI exposure actually mean?
Exposure is about the tasks inside occupations that generative AI might affect. It is not a forecast that a particular worker will be replaced, nor proof that an employer has adopted AI or changed staffing.
The International Labour Organization’s 2025 estimate is that one in four workers worldwide are in an occupation with some degree of generative AI exposure. The ILO concludes that most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant because they continue to require human input. Its index uses task-level data, expert input, and AI model predictions; it estimates potential occupational effects rather than guaranteed worker outcomes. A different OECD measure finds that around a quarter of workers across OECD countries are exposed under its task-acceleration definition: at least 20% of a job’s tasks could be done at least 50% faster with generative AI. That is a modeled potential, not a global rate or a measure of jobs already changed. Exposure also varies by region. How can a job change without disappearing?
A job title often bundles together many different activities: producing a first draft, finding or organizing information, communicating with colleagues, checking accuracy, making decisions, and taking responsibility for an outcome. AI may speed up or assist some activities while leaving others dependent on people. The relevant question is therefore not only whether AI can do a task, but how the whole workflow changes around it.
- Some work may take less time. AI assistance can help with activities such as drafting or summarizing, but a faster first pass does not by itself show that the final work is complete or fit for use.
- Review and judgment still matter. Someone may need to verify information, assess context, make choices, and stand behind the result.
- Time saved can be used in different ways. An organization might take on more work, redirect staff to other tasks, improve review, or reduce staffing. Exposure estimates alone cannot tell which choice it will make.
What has workplace evidence found so far?
Individual access can save time without changing the job’s task mix
A 2025 randomized workplace study gave workers access to generative AI integrated into applications they already used for email, meetings, and writing. It found individual time savings, but detected no change in the quantity or composition of workers’ tasks from that individual-level access. In other words, a productivity gain did not automatically redesign the job in this intervention. SME staffing responses were mixed and modest
An OECD report based on a representative 2024 survey of more than 5,000 small and medium-sized enterprises in Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea, and the United Kingdom found that 6% reported increased staff needs and 9% reported decreased staff needs. These are survey responses from businesses in those seven countries, not a global estimate or proof that generative AI caused a particular staffing change. Why the headline numbers are not contradictory
The estimates and observations answer different questions. The ILO estimates occupational exposure worldwide; the OECD acceleration estimate covers workers across OECD countries using a specific threshold for how much faster tasks might be; the NBER study observes the effects of one individual-access intervention; and the SME survey records reported staffing needs in seven countries. A modeled possibility, an observed time saving, and a business’s staffing response are related, but they are not interchangeable measures.

That is why “one in four workers exposed” should not be read as “one in four jobs at risk of disappearing.” Exposure says where tasks may be affected. Real employment outcomes also depend on adoption, workflow design, demand for the work, and decisions about how any time saved is used.

For workers, managers, and anyone evaluating claims about AI and jobs, look for evidence at the level of tasks and workflows rather than relying on job-title predictions alone.

- Which specific tasks are being assisted or accelerated, and which still require a person?
- Is the evidence about potential exposure, actual use, time saved, task changes, or staffing—and what population does it cover?
- What happens to the time saved: more output, different responsibilities, additional review, or a staffing change?
- Who makes and checks the decisions, and who is accountable for the result?
Those answers reveal whether AI is merely making part of the existing job easier or changing what the organization can produce—and what workers are asked to do.
