AI can speed up parts of design work without deciding what the design should be. In my view, the distinction is execution versus judgment: generation can make it quicker to explore options or handle production tasks, while the designer still has to interpret the brief, choose a direction, check the result, and answer for it. That is a useful way to understand AI’s role—not a claim that every designer’s process stays the same.

What AI changes in a design workflow

AI now appears across a broad range of design tasks, including research, brainstorming, writing, image generation, production, and finishing. Figma’s 2024 survey of nearly 1,800 designers and developers across four continents found that 59% said they were already using AI in their work. That is an adoption measure from a company survey, not evidence that AI improved their output or made them faster. Figma’s 2024 AI report provides the survey context.

Adobe’s 2026 research offers a more task-specific view. Among surveyed US creative professionals, 84.8% reported positive sentiment about AI’s effect on brainstorming and ideation, and 81.7% rated those activities as highly enabled by AI. Among surveyed US photo professionals, 57.6% reported substantial generative AI use to remove distracting background elements, 50.0% for compositing multiple images, and 45.1% for color and tone retouching. These are findings about distinct groups and tasks—not a single measure of how much faster designers work. Adobe’s 2026 creative trends research draws on US and UK creative surveys, an eleven-country study, job-posting data, and qualitative research.

Generation is not the same as direction

A fast first draft does not determine whether it answers the brief. Someone still has to decide which option fits the audience, constraints, and purpose; communicate that decision; and take responsibility for what ships. Adobe’s 2026 report describes those activities—selection, direction, communication, and accountability—as continuing parts of creative work even as AI enters earlier ideation and later post-production tasks.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That is the practical boundary I find useful: let AI help produce possibilities or reduce repetitive effort, but do not confuse the number of possibilities with a design decision. A generated option can be polished and still miss the problem. The value comes from evaluating it against the brief, not merely from generating it quickly.

Why design still involves testing and iteration

For product work, the first output is rarely the whole job. Figma’s 2025 report on agentic products identifies critical thinking, testing, and prototyping as important challenges. The implication is not that AI cannot help build or explore a product; it is that teams still need to check how a proposed experience behaves and whether it works for people. Figma’s 2025 report discusses those demands.

Adobe Research’s May 2025 account of human–AI co-creation describes a prototype that integrates AI across a video-creation workflow. It is an example of research into how AI might support a connected creative process, not a general measurement of productivity or proof that a designer’s role disappears. Adobe Research’s article describes the prototype.

What the speed evidence does—and does not—show

A September 2026 preprint reporting a randomized experiment found task-completion times approximately 20% shorter for participants who had access to Figma Make while completing the study tasks. This is an emerging, task-specific result, not a universal estimate for design work. It does not establish that every designer will save one-fifth of their time, or that the resulting work is better. The preprint should be read as an early study rather than a settled benchmark. The Figma Make experiment preprint reports the result.

The different figures above cannot be combined into one productivity claim: they measure survey adoption, attitudes toward particular creative tasks, and completion time on defined experimental tasks in separate populations. Faster execution also does not by itself establish higher quality, fewer revisions, or a better final design.

  • Fit to the brief: Check the output against audience, requirements, content, and other constraints.
  • Revision burden: Include time spent correcting, validating, or reworking the result.
  • Quality and usefulness: Judge these separately from speed; a quick output is not necessarily a strong solution.

This kind of comparison keeps the question grounded in your own work. The published evidence here does not offer a cross-tool benchmark that settles how AI affects every design task or discipline.
