September 2026 manufacturing surveys showed expansion in several Asian economies, with semiconductor and other technology demand helping support export-oriented factories. But growth was uneven, Japan’s pace eased, and energy, input-price and delivery pressures persisted. The surveys show an association between strong technology demand and factory activity—not proof that AI demand outweighed costs across Asia.
What the September factory surveys show
A Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) is a survey-based measure of business conditions. A reading above 50 indicates expansion compared with the previous month; below 50 indicates contraction. It does not mean every factory or industry grew, and readings from different survey providers are not automatically interchangeable.
Across the region, results ranged from modest expansion in China’s official survey to stronger readings in South Korea and Taiwan. Some Southeast Asian economies expanded while others contracted.

The China readings illustrate why the survey name matters: the official index rose only slightly above 50, while the separate private series was higher. Taiwan’s 56.7 and 63.4 likewise belong to different surveys and should not be blended into one regional comparison.

How AI and semiconductor demand figure into the story
Survey commentary and reporting linked technology demand—particularly demand for semiconductors—to stronger factory orders and output in export-oriented economies. South Korea’s September PMI rose to 53.9, and S&P Global economist Usamah Bhatti said both new orders and production growth reached their highest levels in around five and a half years, with anecdotal evidence often connecting the gains to semiconductor and automotive strength. He also said hopes for sustained semiconductor-sector expansion lifted manufacturers’ optimism.
That is evidence of a plausible connection, not a measured estimate of AI’s contribution to factory output. Semiconductor demand can benefit suppliers and producers, but the cited surveys do not quantify how much of the regional expansion came from AI-related purchases or how much those orders offset higher costs.

South Korea’s exports were reported up 83.5% year over year in August 2026. That is a separate official export statistic, not a September PMI component, and should not be read as a monthly manufacturing growth rate. Reuters

September survey reporting said Indonesia and Vietnam expanded, while Malaysia and the Philippines contracted; Thailand’s PMI reached a nine-month high. Japan remained in expansion, but its index slipped from 54.9 to 54.1. These differences matter: a broad Asian technology-export story does not mean every country, manufacturer or sector shared the same conditions.

For China, the official PMI’s move from 49.8 to 50.1 marks a return to marginal expansion in that survey, while the 51.7 production subindex and 50.5 new-orders subindex provide additional context. Those component readings are still survey indexes, not measures of percentage growth in output or orders.

Reports described elevated energy and input prices, supplier-delivery disruption, and manufacturers raising selling prices in Japan and Taiwan. These pressures can squeeze margins or limit the benefit of stronger orders. Conditions were not identical across countries, and the cited evidence does not establish a region-wide net calculation of AI-driven demand against rising costs.

The useful interpretation is therefore two-sided: technology-linked orders helped sustain activity in several important manufacturing economies, while input costs and logistics remained headwinds. A rising PMI captures the balance of survey responses on business conditions; it does not show whether companies’ profits improved or whether increased prices fully compensated for higher costs.

How to read the headline figures
- Above 50 means expansion in that survey: it does not guarantee growth in every firm or sector.
- Compare like with like: China’s official and private readings, and Taiwan’s two reported series, come from separate surveys.
- Keep components distinct: headline PMI, production, new orders and export orders describe related but different conditions.
- Separate time periods and measures: South Korea’s August year-over-year export figure is not equivalent to September’s month-on-month PMI.
- Treat AI as a supported explanation, not a quantified cause: survey reporting connects semiconductor demand and optimism to activity, but does not isolate AI’s contribution or measure a cost offset.
