AI coding assistants can make some coding tasks faster, but that does not mean dependable software ships just as quickly. As generating code gets easier, more of the work can shift to defining what to build, supplying the right project context, and checking that the result is correct and fits the system. Evidence supports that shift in many workflows—not a universal claim that review has become every team’s biggest bottleneck.
What AI coding assistants can speed up—and what that proves
Code generation is only one part of software delivery. An assistant may help produce an implementation or reduce time spent searching for code, while requirements, testing, integration, and release remain separate work. A faster coding step is useful, but it is not by itself evidence of faster end-to-end delivery.
A 2025 systematic literature review synthesized 37 peer-reviewed studies published from January 2014 through December 2024. Its summary identifies reduced time searching for code, accelerated development, and automation of trivial or repetitive work among reported benefits. Because the included studies differ, the review is a synthesis of varied evidence—not one uniform estimate of how much faster teams become. Read the review.
A field experiment measured completed tasks, not shipping speed
Microsoft Research reported a combined 26.08% increase in completed tasks, with a standard error of 10.3%, across randomized field experiments involving 4,867 developers at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company. The developers worked in ordinary company settings; a randomly selected subset received access to an AI coding assistant that provided code completions. This result is evidence of an increase in that study’s measured outcome in those settings. It is not a guaranteed gain for every developer or tool, and it does not show that review became the largest cost or that end-to-end delivery time fell by 26.08%. Read the study.

Where the work can move after code is generated
When producing a first draft becomes cheaper, the remaining work becomes more visible. Someone still has to establish the intended behavior, explain the surrounding system, determine whether the generated changes are acceptable, and fit them into the team’s delivery process. These tasks are related, but they are not interchangeable: review checks a change, while testing and integration help establish how it behaves with the wider system.
Specify the intent
An assistant can respond to a prompt, but a team must still decide what problem the change should solve, what constraints apply, and what counts as success. Ambiguous or incomplete requirements can yield code that looks plausible while solving the wrong problem. That is a workflow implication of delegated generation, not a measured result from the field experiment.

Provide project context
Generated code is more useful when the assistant has enough relevant context to fit existing conventions, dependencies, and architecture. JetBrains Research describes lack of project-size context as one reported barrier to using AI coding assistants, alongside trust and company policies. Its account also identifies tests and natural-language artifacts among tasks developers want to delegate or already use assistants for. Read the JetBrains Research summary.

A generated implementation still needs human judgment about whether it is correct, maintainable, and appropriate to merge. In an IBM Research enterprise case study presented at CHI 2025, researchers examined motivations, expectations about speed and quality, and responsibility for generated code. IBM reports perceived productivity increases for many participants, but not all users experienced those benefits. That variation matters: perceived speed is not the same outcome as completed tasks or code quality. Read the case study.

Test and integrate the change
A code suggestion does not establish that the behavior works across the relevant cases or alongside existing components. Tests, review, and integration are ways teams check that generated work meets requirements and behaves within the larger system. The cited studies establish concerns and workflow barriers, but do not quantify a universal amount of additional review or testing time caused by AI-generated code.
Why productivity claims can seem to disagree
“Productivity” can mean different things: task completion, time to finish, perceived speed, quality, developer experience, or organizational delivery outcomes. A result on one measure should not be silently converted into a result on another. The studies below answer different questions and use different methods.

The Microsoft developer survey offers useful evidence about what one company’s developers wanted from AI support and what concerned them, but its 791 respondents were Microsoft employees. Read the survey. DORA’s 2025 report draws on a broader international professional survey and qualitative research; its scale describes the evidence base, not a measured productivity effect. Read the report.
Why results vary between developers and organizations
Tool access alone does not determine whether AI helps. The task, the quality of available context, the developer’s ability to judge a suggestion, and the team’s rules and delivery practices all shape what happens after code is generated. JetBrains Research reports trust, company policies, and insufficient project-size context as barriers. IBM’s enterprise case study likewise finds that perceived benefits are not universal.

DORA’s 2025 report frames AI as an organizational amplifier: “AI’s primary role in software development is that of an amplifier.” That is the report’s interpretation of its survey and qualitative evidence, not a randomized finding that every organization experiences the same effect. Teams with effective delivery practices may be better positioned to use new assistance; existing constraints can also remain or become more apparent. See DORA’s report.
How to tell whether AI is improving your team’s delivery
Evaluate the whole path from a request to a working change instead of treating generated lines or a faster first draft as the outcome. A useful evaluation compares similar work with and without the assistant and records the same measures in both cases.
- Choose a real outcome. Decide whether you want to measure task completion, elapsed time to a verified change, quality, developer experience, or delivery performance. Keep those measures distinct.
- Define the work and comparison. Record task type, complexity, team, assistant workflow, and what project context was available. Avoid comparing unlike work or assuming one team’s result applies everywhere.
- Include downstream effort. Track time spent clarifying requirements, prompting or supplying context, reviewing changes, testing, fixing errors, and integrating the result—not only time spent generating code.
- Check quality and responsibility. Decide how correctness and maintainability will be assessed, who approves generated changes, and who owns them after they are merged.
- Interpret results in context. Report who took part, what tool and workflow they used, what was measured, and the uncertainty or limits of the comparison. A perceived speed improvement and a verified delivery improvement are different findings.
The practical question is not simply whether AI can write code faster. It is whether the team can turn generated work into correct, maintainable changes with less total effort, without shifting hidden costs into review, testing, or integration.
