For the strongest privacy, don’t enter anything into a consumer chatbot that could harm you if it were stored, reviewed or exposed. Settings can reduce model training, visible history or personalization, but those are separate controls—and turning one off does not necessarily stop the others or erase data already retained.
What does “private” mean for an AI chat?
Check five separate things before deciding what to share:
- Model improvement: whether the provider may use your conversations to improve or train models.
- Visible history: whether chats remain in your account for you to reopen.
- Memory and personalization: whether the service saves details to tailor future replies. This can be separate from both chat history and model training.
- Human review: whether authorized reviewers or service providers may inspect conversations, for example for safety, feedback or service improvement.
- Operational retention: whether the provider keeps data for a period to operate, secure or troubleshoot the service—even when it is not in your visible history or used for training.
A temporary-chat option may change several of these at once, but it does not necessarily mean immediate deletion from provider systems. Feedback, uploaded files and connected apps can also have separate data handling. Policies and controls may vary by region, age, account type, app version or workplace administrator.

How the four services’ controls differ
This comparison summarizes provider-stated behavior. “Not stated” means the cited provider guidance in this article does not establish a universal answer for that dimension; your account or feature may differ.

The periods in the table are provider-stated figures, not a promise that every chat is retained for exactly that long. They apply to the conditions described in the service-specific sections below.
ChatGPT: separate model improvement from chat history
- Open Settings → Data Controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. New conversations remain in your history, but OpenAI says they will not be used to train ChatGPT.
- For a one-off conversation, choose Temporary Chat before starting. OpenAI says these chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve its models while temporary. If you save one, it becomes a regular chat subject to your account settings.
- Delete existing chats you no longer want in history. Turning off model improvement does not delete them. OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be restored.
OpenAI says certain data associated with a GPT, project or file is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days after it is deleted, unless legal or security obligations require longer retention. That is not a general promise that every deletion from every feature is complete within 30 days.

Gemini: turn off Keep Activity, then account for the exceptions
- In your Google Account, open Gemini Apps Activity and turn Keep Activity off. Check the current account interface, since labels and paths can change.
- Review and delete past activity separately. If you leave Keep Activity on, Google says Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; you can choose 3 months, 36 months or no auto-delete.
- For an individual conversation, consider Temporary Chat if available in your account. It is not kept in Activity or used for model training, but the service-retention limits below still matter.
- Review other Google Account activity controls, including Web & App Activity and Location History, if you want to manage collection beyond Gemini.
Google says that with Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Activity and are not used to train models unless you submit feedback. Google still retains chats for 72 hours to respond, process feedback and protect Google, users and the public. Chats previously reviewed by service providers may be disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years, even after you delete Activity. Some connected-app features may not work with Keep Activity off; Google says Gemini chats are not used to show ads.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, advises: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”

Copilot: check both conversation and voice training
- In the Copilot app or website, open the profile or settings area and find the privacy controls for Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations.
- Review both controls rather than assuming that changing one covers the other. Microsoft’s instructions are for signed-in consumer users, and the available labels or path can depend on the Copilot app version and account.
- Delete previous conversations separately if you do not want them in your account’s chat history. Microsoft provides conversation deletion apart from training and personalization controls.
Microsoft says an updated Copilot app for web, desktop and mobile was available August 18, 2026, and directs users of the updated experience to newer privacy information. There is no single menu path established for every version in the cited guidance. If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot through work or school, do not assume that these consumer controls or terms govern your account; your organization’s administrator and terms may determine what applies.

- Open Settings → Privacy and review the Model Improvement setting. Check its current wording in your app before changing it.
- For a conversation you do not want used to improve Claude, use Incognito. Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used for improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled.
- Delete saved chats separately if you do not want them in your account. Anthropic says deleting a chat prevents it from being used to train future models.
Anthropic’s up-to-five-year period applies to de-identified data from chats or coding sessions allowed for improvement, within the scope it describes. It is not a retention period for every Claude conversation. Anthropic says this applies to new or resumed chats after the setting is enabled; changing the setting should not be treated as removing effects from models already trained.

What to do before and after a sensitive chat
Before you send a message
- Remove names, account numbers, addresses, medical details, access tokens and other identifiers. Use fictional examples or redact the sensitive portion.
- Do not paste passwords, private keys, confidential work documents or another person’s personal information. A training opt-out is not a confidentiality guarantee.
- Check the account type. A personal account, a work or school account, and an API or integrated product may have different terms and administrator controls.
- Look for connected apps, shared content, uploaded files and feedback options. A chat-history or training switch may not govern data handled by those features.
Afterward, verify the separate controls
- Delete individual conversations you no longer want visible; do not confuse deletion with turning off model improvement.
- Review saved memories or personalization controls separately where available.
- Check activity auto-delete settings and connected services. Deleting chatbot activity does not necessarily delete information held by a connected service or remove material already reviewed under the provider’s retention policy.
- Recheck the provider’s current privacy notice and the settings in the actual app and account. Interfaces and terms can change, and some settings may be unavailable or managed by an organization.
