The system supplies current components, tokens, patterns, and usage rules; product teams decide when to use them, review what the AI produces, and own exceptions. The AI can speed up the work, but it can only follow guidance it can access and interpret.
What consistency depends on
A design system is more than a component library. It needs to explain both what building blocks are available and how to use them: semantic tokens, components, patterns, templates, examples, interaction behavior, and rules about when a choice is appropriate.
That guidance must be current and available inside the generation workflow. Singapore’s Government Design System guidance makes the key limitation explicit: “A design system does not guarantee good AI output by itself.” If an assistant can see a button component but not its usage rules—or is working from stale documentation—it may still produce a screen that looks plausible but diverges from the product.
Consistency also has more than one dimension. Teams should check visual alignment, component reuse, interaction behavior, accessibility, and how well the result fits the existing codebase. A screen can match the brand colors and still behave inconsistently or create an inaccessible flow.

Three ways AI can produce UI—and where control sits
| Approach | What the AI produces | Where consistency is controlled | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted design or code generation | Screens, prototypes, or application code informed by supplied assets and components | Existing system assets, code conventions, human review, and tests | Output can drift when current guidance is unavailable or generated work is not reviewed. Anthropic’s Claude Design help describes importing code and brand assets, testing generated work, reviewing it, and publishing it for team use; product capabilities and plan controls can change. |
| Runtime generative UI | A composition assembled for a user’s task or context | A component catalog, composition rules, validation, and compatible renderers | Teams can support more task-specific layouts without hand-authoring each screen, but generation remains bounded by the available primitives and renderers. SAP describes this as a runtime model distinct from its design-time web and mobile systems. |
| Agent UI rendered by the host application | A structured UI representation or data that describes a proposed interface | The host app’s component catalog and renderer control presentation and styling | The agent can propose a task-specific layout while the application retains control of its visual layer. Google’s A2UI project describes this model; check its current status and renderer support before choosing it for a product. |
These approaches are not interchangeable. Design-time generation helps people create screens or code; runtime composition assembles supported pieces for a live task; host-rendered agent UI gives the application stronger control over how a proposed interface appears. The practical comparison is how well each fits your existing components and codebase, how machine-readable its guidance is, how much control you retain over rendering, what validation it supports, and how much human review it requires.
Who owns the result?
The design-system owner maintains the rules
A named design-system team or owner should maintain component behavior, semantic tokens, patterns, examples, and usage guidance. That owner also resolves ambiguities exposed by generated work—for example, whether a new layout is a valid pattern or an accidental variation. Atlassian’s AI-oriented design-system account describes structured content, templates, skills, and an MCP server as ways to make system context usable by AI tools.

The product team owns product decisions
Product designers and engineers remain accountable for whether a generated screen solves the task, works with the product’s existing behavior, and is ready to release. They should decide when a supported pattern fits and when an exception is justified. A system can constrain and guide generation, but it cannot decide whether a particular exception is appropriate for a particular user.
The AI is a contributor, not an approver
Treat the model as a fast producer or assembler of candidate UI, not as the authority on brand, accessibility, or product behavior. The team that ships the result remains responsible for its quality.

A practical workflow for consistent AI-generated UI
- Choose one maintained source of truth. Keep components, semantic tokens, patterns, templates, examples, and usage rules coherent. Assign an owner and a process for updating them so the AI and people are not working from conflicting guidance.
- Put the system in the tool’s workflow. Expose the relevant component code and structured documentation where generation happens. Include examples and rules about when components should—and should not—be used. Singapore’s Government Design System stresses that system content needs to be documented, current, and accessible to the AI tools in use.
- Constrain choices to supported building blocks. Prefer asking the AI to select and compose approved components and patterns over asking it to invent a new visual language. SAP’s compositional model illustrates one way to scale this: a bounded foundation of coded primitives, reusable composites, and design knowledge that explains appropriate use and constraints.
- Test representative tasks before release. Try ordinary, realistic prompts and inspect the resulting screens for component reuse, brand fit, interaction behavior, and accessibility. Anthropic’s guidance recommends testing generated design-system work and reviewing it before publication. Record recurring failures as evidence that instructions, examples, components, or validation rules need attention.
- Keep review and exception handling human-owned. Have the design-system owner and product team review work against their respective responsibilities. Require a deliberate decision for unsupported patterns or exceptions rather than letting repeated model output quietly establish a new convention.
Build accessibility and behavior into the system
Visual tokens alone cannot make a product consistent. Components and patterns should carry expectations for keyboard and pointer interaction, focus, feedback, and error recovery, as well as visual appearance. SAP describes accessibility as informing components, rules, validation, and rendering in its compositional system. Microsoft’s agent-design guidance likewise treats an interface as an interaction system, connecting consistency with inclusion, user control, and recovery from errors.
That matters especially for agent-generated flows: a control that looks familiar but behaves differently can confuse users. Review the behavior of the whole task, not just whether the generated screen resembles a reference.

What vendor results do—and do not—show
Atlassian reported internal evaluation results in an article dated May 28, 2026: a 52% improvement in accuracy in AI calls, 34% faster performance on average across ADS-specific tasks, a 26% reduction in AI tooling calls, and a 16% reduction in AI token usage. These are Atlassian’s own reported measurements, not a cross-vendor benchmark or evidence that another team will see the same results.
The available evidence supports a governance approach—maintained system context, bounded composition, validation, and human review—but does not establish that any particular workflow guarantees consistency or quantify an industry-wide effect.
