Choose persistent memory when your work continues across sessions, your preferences recur, or you are tired of restating project context. Choose a stateless or temporary-chat workflow for one-off questions, sensitive brainstorming, or any task where you want a clean slate. Memory is not a complete transcript, however: it is selective context whose availability, scope and deletion behavior depend on the product, account, plan and workspace.
The short decision rule
Persistent-memory assistants are useful when continuity has a practical payoff. A writing project, long-running software build, recurring travel preferences or an accessibility need can benefit when the assistant already knows relevant background. You still need to check that recalled information is current and appropriate.
Stateless chats are better for isolated questions, experiments, confidential material that should not shape future personalization, or situations where previous assumptions could bias the answer. A temporary mode can provide that clean-slate interaction, but turning personalization memory off does not automatically erase chat history, uploaded files, connected-app data or an organization’s retention records.

Make the choice at the level of the actual account and workspace. Features can vary by plan, geography, platform and administrator settings, and vendors change the controls over time.

What “persistent memory” actually means
Selective context, not a permanent transcript
A memory-enabled assistant may save facts you explicitly ask it to remember, infer recurring preferences, search prior chats, or maintain a project-specific context. Those mechanisms are not identical. OpenAI states that “Memory does not retain every detail from every conversation.” It also says, “ChatGPT decides which available information is relevant to a response, and Memory can change as your context changes” (OpenAI Help Center).
That means a continuity prompt such as “What did we discuss about the launch plan?” may not retrieve a complete, chronological record. The assistant may use a saved item, a summary derived from older chats, a project context or a search result. If an exact quote, decision or date matters, locate the original conversation or document and verify it.
Memory, chat history and training are separate controls
Personalization memory answers “what information may influence a future response?” Chat history answers “which conversations are stored and available to you?” Retention policy answers “how long does the service or organization keep data?” Model-improvement settings answer “may content be used to improve models?” These questions can have different answers.
For example, deleting a conversation may not delete a saved memory created from it. Conversely, disabling a history-reference feature may stop new personalization from past chats while leaving the original chats in your account until you delete them. Do not infer a provider’s training or retention policy merely from whether a memory toggle exists.

The table compares documented controls rather than claiming that one assistant is more accurate. No independent study in the available evidence establishes a winner for recall quality, safety, speed or time saved.

How ChatGPT memory works in practice
Two kinds of remembered context
OpenAI distinguishes saved memories from information derived from chat history. Saved memories are stored separately from chats. As a result, deleting the chat where you first supplied a preference does not necessarily delete the saved item.
ChatGPT may also draw on custom instructions, Library files and connected-app content when those features are available to the account. Availability is not universal, so the controls shown in your settings are authoritative for your account.
Inspecting and correcting information
- Ask the assistant what it remembers about a specific preference or project, using a concrete request such as “What do you remember about our launch plan?”
- Check each item against the current source of truth. Treat old deadlines, job titles, budgets and technical assumptions as potentially stale.
- Tell the assistant to correct an inaccurate item, then confirm that the correction appears in the memory-management interface if one is provided.
- For a complete removal, delete the saved memory and the originating chat. Review related files or connected apps separately.
Turning off chat-history reference
OpenAI says that turning off “Reference chat history” schedules remembered information derived from past chats for deletion within 30 days, while the original chats remain until you delete them. Turning off that setting does not itself delete saved memories (OpenAI Help Center). This is why a personalization setting and a chat-deletion request should be treated as separate actions.

Product history caveat
OpenAI describes an initial memory update introduced in April 2025 that could reference chat context beyond the saved-memory list (OpenAI’s product explanation). Product architecture and rollout status can change, so do not assume that every account exposes the same behavior.
How Claude memory and search differ
Memory, past-chat search and projects
Claude’s documented experience combines several scopes: individual-topic memory, project-specific memory and search across past chats. A continuity request such as “Can you find our conversation about the migration plan?” is different from asking Claude to apply a saved preference. The first may require past-chat search; the second may use a memory entry.
Anthropic documents memory shared between chat and cloud Cowork, while local Cowork sessions do not use that memory. This boundary matters if you move between cloud and local workflows.

You can turn memory off for a single chat, and incognito chats are excluded from individual chat history and past-chat search. Team and Enterprise organization retention policies still apply. Generated memory entries may remain after a conversation is deleted, so remove those entries separately when necessary. Anthropic also says memory data is included in data exports (Anthropic Help Center).

Importing and exporting memory
Anthropic documents an experimental, paste-based process that uses a user-generated text export to move memory between Claude and other AI services. Imported details may not always be incorporated successfully, so portability is not guaranteed full-fidelity synchronization (Anthropic Help Center).
Developer-managed memory: a separate design choice
Consumer memory settings are not the same as an API implementation. Anthropic’s API memory tool lets an application keep memory files in storage the application controls. The model requests file operations and the application executes them. Anthropic summarizes this as: “The memory tool operates client-side: Claude requests file operations, and your application executes them” (Anthropic Platform Docs).
This design can give a developer explicit control over storage, access and deletion, while avoiding the need to place every historical detail in the active context window. It also creates engineering responsibilities: define a memory schema, authenticate access, handle concurrent edits, redact sensitive data, set retention periods and provide a user-facing delete function.
A practical privacy and accuracy checklist
- Identify the scope. Is the information a saved memory, a searchable chat, a project file, a connected-app record or an administrator-controlled workspace item?
- Inspect before trusting. Ask what the assistant remembers and compare important facts with the original document or conversation.
- Correct stale details. Update changed names, roles, deadlines, preferences and constraints instead of assuming the assistant will notice.
- Delete at every relevant layer. Depending on the product, remove the memory, source chat, uploaded file and connected-app data separately.
- Use temporary or incognito mode deliberately. Confirm what is excluded from personalization and what organizational retention still permits.
- Check training settings independently. A memory toggle does not tell you whether content can be used for model improvement.
- Consider exports and logs. Downloaded data, deleted-memory logs and backups may have different retention periods.
- Re-check after product changes. Labels and defaults can change by plan, platform and workspace.
Common failure modes and fixes
“It remembered the wrong version of my project”
Selective memory can preserve an older requirement while a later chat changes it. State the current requirement explicitly, ask the assistant to update the remembered detail, and keep a canonical project document that you attach or reference when accuracy matters.

“I deleted the chat, but the preference still appears”
That can happen when the preference was saved separately. Remove the saved memory as well, then check files and connected services. OpenAI and Anthropic both document deletion steps that can involve more than the conversation itself.
“Temporary chat still has organizational rules”
Temporary or incognito mode changes personalization and history behavior, not necessarily every retention obligation. In a managed workspace, ask the administrator which retention policy applies.
“The assistant cannot find an old conversation”
Search and memory are different systems. Use the product’s chat-search control, exact distinctive terms and the relevant project scope. If the conversation was deleted, incognito, outside the searchable scope or on another account, memory cannot recreate it as a complete transcript.

Choose persistent memory if
- You return to the same project over days or months.
- Your preferred tone, format or accessibility settings recur.
- The cost of re-explaining background exceeds the effort of reviewing remembered details.
- You are willing to audit, correct and delete stored context.
Choose stateless or temporary chats if
- The question is self-contained and unlikely to recur.
- You need a clean baseline to test a prompt or compare answers.
- Prior personal or project context could bias the response.
- You do not want the interaction to influence future personalization, subject to the product’s documented retention rules.
Use a hybrid workflow for most people
Keep durable, low-risk preferences in memory; keep changing project facts in a maintained document; use temporary or incognito chats for sensitive or experimental work; and verify consequential answers against primary records. This separates convenience from authority: memory can supply context, but your documents and policies remain the source of truth.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. Pick a persistent-memory assistant when cross-session continuity solves a recurring problem and you can manage what is remembered. Pick stateless or temporary chat when the task is one-off, sensitive or best answered without prior assumptions. Before committing, inspect the exact controls for your plan and workspace, and treat memory, history, deletion, retention and model-training settings as separate decisions.
