The NHL is hockey’s top league; the AHL is the top development league for players and staff across all 32 NHL organizations. The leagues are closely connected through player assignments, but they are not interchangeable: the AHL has its own eligibility rules, development-focused lineup requirement, overtime formats, and season-specific review rules. The AHL says 87.0% of NHL players in 2024–25 were AHL graduates—a league-reported figure, not an independent measure of how much the AHL caused their development.
What is the main difference between the AHL and NHL?
The NHL is the premier professional competition. The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional league that serves as the NHL’s top development league. Its teams give prospects experience against professional opponents, while also providing playing opportunities for experienced players and a place for NHL-contracted players to be assigned when their parent club decides they need more development or playing time.
The connection is substantial, but players do not all follow the same route or spend the same amount of time in the AHL. The AHL reported that 87.0% of NHL players in the 2024–25 season were AHL graduates. That figure comes from the league’s own season-opening coverage; it should not be read as an independent causal study or as a claim that every NHL player must play in the AHL.
The leagues also have separate collective bargaining arrangements. The AHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association announced a five-year collective bargaining agreement effective through August 31, 2030, on January 21, 2026.

How do AHL and NHL rosters differ?
The AHL has a development-focused lineup rule
The AHL regulates who teams dress to preserve playing opportunities for developing players. A team must have at least 12 development players among its 18 dressed skaters. Under the AHL’s definition, a development player has played no more than 260 professional games across the NHL, AHL, and elite European leagues. For the 2026–27 season, the AHL says a club may dress up to six skaters who are age 25 or older by July 1 and above the 260-game threshold. Goalies do not count toward this rule.
This is an AHL lineup-development policy, not a roster-size rule for the NHL. It governs the skaters dressed for an AHL game; it does not establish a general limit on an NHL team’s roster.
Players reach AHL clubs through different contract arrangements
The AHL lists three common player arrangements: an AHL standard player contract, a professional tryout, or an amateur tryout. Players signed to NHL contracts can be assigned to their respective AHL clubs by their parent NHL teams. AHL affiliation links the clubs, but the contract and assignment path depends on the player’s situation.

AHL eligibility and rookie status have specific thresholds
A player is eligible for the AHL at age 18 on or before September 15. The league’s rookie designation is narrower than simply being young or new to professional hockey. The AHL FAQ describes a player as ineligible for rookie status if they have reached any of these prior-experience thresholds:

- At least 25 AHL or NHL regular-season games in any preceding season.
- At least six AHL or NHL regular-season games in each of any two preceding seasons.
- At least 100 regular-season games in a European Elite League.
- Age 26 or older by September 15.
These criteria are based on the AHL’s FAQ and by-law language; a player’s status in a particular season depends on the applicable rules and their game history.
Do the AHL and NHL use the same rules?
Do not assume every rule is the same just because the AHL is connected to the NHL. The AHL publishes league-specific provisions, and some change by season. The available current information establishes the AHL rules below, but does not support a full, current side-by-side comparison with NHL roster-management rules or every NHL game rule.

AHL regular-season and playoff overtime
AHL regular-season games tied after regulation go to five minutes of 3-on-3 overtime. If neither team scores, the game is decided by a shootout: each team gets three attempts, followed by sudden death if the score remains tied. Calder Cup playoff games instead use full-strength 20-minute overtime periods, continuing until a team scores.
2026–27 AHL video-review changes
For 2026–27, the AHL added coach-initiated offside reviews on goal plays. A coach’s challenge is required for an offside review; the league’s September 18, 2026 announcement says the first failed challenge results in a bench minor for delay of game, while later failed challenges in the same game result in double minors. The announcement also allows a goal to be awarded on a continuous play unaffected by a whistle after a referee has lost sight of the puck.

Can junior hockey players move directly to the AHL?
Eligibility for players coming from Canadian major junior hockey has been subject to the NHL–CHL agreement. On March 17, 2026, NHL.com reported that the NHL, CHL, and NHLPA were drafting a change intended to let at least one—and potentially more—19-year-old CHL players per NHL team play in the AHL the following season. At the time of that report, the change was still being developed, while the then-current agreement barred drafted teenagers from the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL from playing in the AHL.
That report describes a proposal, not confirmed final policy. Whether it took effect, and the conditions that would apply, should be checked against the finalized agreement before relying on it for an individual player.
