AGVs and AMRs move materials between defined points in factories, warehouses, and distribution operations. They are most useful when a site has a repeatable transport flow—such as supplying a production line, transferring pallets, delivering kits, or replenishing work areas—and can match the vehicle, carrier, route, integration, and safety controls to that flow.
What is the difference between an AGV and an AMR?
The usual distinction is how the vehicle navigates. KUKA describes automated guided vehicles (AGVs) as following predefined routes using physical guides such as magnetic strips, wires, or markers. It describes autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) as using technologies such as SLAM, LiDAR, cameras, and sensor fusion to map surroundings, locate themselves, and choose routes dynamically. An AMR may be able to reroute around an obstacle rather than simply wait for the path to clear.
These are useful patterns, not guarantees about every product. Navigation features and operating behavior vary by implementation, so compare the actual vehicle and fleet-management system rather than relying on the AGV or AMR label alone.
Where are AGVs and AMRs used in manufacturing?
In manufacturing, the most straightforward applications are repeated transfers between production, storage, and handoff points. ABB and KUKA describe the following use cases:

Line-side and cell supply
Vehicles can deliver components, containers, or other materials to a production line or cell at a required rhythm. ABB also describes conveyor pickup and drop-off for raw material, finished products, and work-in-process, as well as feeding empty pallets.
Work-in-process transfer
Parts or batches can move between stations, production areas, buffers, and downstream processes. This can make sense where the origin, destination, load, and handoff are recurring, even if the broader production schedule varies.
Kitting and machine-area support
Mobile systems can bring related items together for a manufacturing task. KUKA also lists machine tending among typical applications, but that phrase can refer to different designs: a mobile vehicle may transport work to a machine, carry a robot, or operate as part of a combined cell. Confirm the specific arrangement with the supplier.
Pallet and empty-carrier loops
Repeated pallet delivery, pallet return, and empty-carrier movement create identifiable transport loops. ABB describes empty-pallet feeding, while KUKA includes pallet handling among typical applications.

How are AMRs used in warehouse logistics?
Warehouse and distribution uses include moving inventory or carriers between storage, picking, staging, and dispatch areas. The precise vehicle, load interface, and infrastructure depend on the warehouse design.
Storage movement
ABB describes AMR-supported storage flows, including high- and ground-level storage applications. The term does not specify how a robot interacts with a rack: confirm the vehicle type, lift or transfer mechanism, racking interface, and load dimensions for the proposed system.
Goods-to-person and order support
A mobile robot may bring inventory within reach of a picking or work area. “Goods-to-person” describes a material-flow approach, not one universal robot configuration; different systems can move shelves, totes, or other inventory carriers.
Logistics trains and internal replenishment
AMRs can be configured to move a set of carts or carriers in a train-style arrangement. In distribution centers and warehouses, KUKA lists material transport, pallet handling, order picking, line-side delivery, and inventory movement as typical tasks.

How should you match a vehicle to a transport task?
Start with the repeated transport relationship, not with a vehicle model. Map where loads start and finish, what is being carried, when it must arrive, and what happens at each handoff. Then assess whether the route and operating conditions fit a guided or more flexible navigation approach.
| Decision factor | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Route and layout | Origins and destinations, distance, turns, crossings, handoff points, and how often routes or work areas change. Consider whether installed guides or mapped navigation better fit the layout. |
| Load and carrier | Payload, load dimensions, pallet, rack, cart, or container interface, pickup and drop-off geometry, and any custom tooling. |
| Demand profile | Order volume, timing windows, shifts, travel distance, and the variability between average and peak demand. |
| Traffic and exceptions | Pedestrian density, shared forklift lanes, intersections, blocked routes, and the behavior expected when an obstacle or delay occurs. |
| Operations and support | Charging, maintenance, operator interaction, recovery from faults, and staff training requirements. |
| Integration | How transport orders, task priorities, completion status, and exceptions connect to the site’s systems and operating processes. |
For a stable, well-defined route, a guided vehicle may fit. For an environment where routes or obstacles change, a system with dynamic navigation may offer more flexibility. Neither characteristic alone establishes the best choice: throughput, traffic behavior, safety design, service requirements, and the exact product implementation also matter.
How do AGVs and AMRs integrate with factory and warehouse systems?
A mobile fleet needs a way to receive and prioritize transport work and report what happened. Relevant systems may include a warehouse management system (WMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, manufacturing execution system (MES), and fleet-management software.
KUKA says its systems use APIs and open interfaces to exchange transport orders, status, and process data with WMS, ERP, and MES platforms. It also says VDA 5050 can support centralized management of fleets from different manufacturers. Treat these as vendor statements, not proof that a particular combination will interoperate. Before purchase, request the interface specifications and a system-specific responsibility matrix covering order creation, dispatch, status updates, exception handling, and support ownership.

How many AMRs does my production need?
Floor area by itself is not enough to determine fleet size. KUKA identifies payload, travel distance, 90-degree turns, order volume, and traffic level as fleet-sizing factors, and describes its calculator as an initial estimate.
A site estimate should use the actual duty cycle, including loaded and empty travel, handoff times, waiting, intersections, charging, and peak demand. Model representative operating conditions and exceptions rather than assuming vehicles travel continuously or that average demand captures the busiest periods. Confirm proposed assumptions with site data and system-specific calculations.

A staged pilot can test one clearly defined flow before expanding the system. Record a baseline, then measure the same operational indicators after deployment. Useful measures depend on the task, but can include completed trips, delivery delays, on-time handoffs, operator interactions, and exception rates.
Calculate any return on investment from the site’s own costs and measured outcomes. The sources cited here do not establish a general ROI percentage, labor reduction, or throughput improvement for AGV or AMR deployments. KUKA’s customer story for TPV Displays Polska reports a deployment of 22 AMRs, but gives no independent or quantified performance result; the fleet count should not be treated as evidence of typical savings or a forecast for another site.

What safety and standards checks matter?
People and mobile vehicles may share factory and distribution spaces, so the deployment needs a site-specific risk assessment and safety design. NIST’s 2013 publication, “AGVs and Forklifts Gaining Sight for Safety,” describes worker and equipment safety concerns and notes prior published information about AGV accidents in which onboard sensors failed to detect nearby workers. It is historical safety-research context, not a current accident-rate estimate.
Standards references need to be checked against the vehicle configuration, deployment jurisdiction, current edition, and applicable legal requirements. Singapore Standards’ Industry 4.0 resource lists ISO 12100:2010, “Safety of machinery — General principles for design — Risk assessment and risk reduction,” and ISO 13849-1:2015, “Safety of machinery — Safety-related parts of control systems — Part 1: General principles for design,” in the AGV/AMR context. The listing is a standards resource, not a conformity assessment.
IDEC lists components for AGV/AMR applications, including a Safety Wheel Drive, SE2L Advanced safety laser scanner, safety edge switches, safety relays, emergency-stop switches, PLC, HMI, RFID reader, and signal devices. IDEC says some described products or subassemblies meet or are designed around ISO 3691-4. A component-level statement does not establish that a complete vehicle or installation complies.
AMRA describes itself as a standards organization for mobile robot products, including AGVs, AMRs, and autonomous forklifts. Its organization page lists publication of TARS/AMRA-300:2026 application guidance in February 2026 and AMRA-201:2026 in July 2026. These are AMRA documents, not ISO standards, and do not replace applicable regulations.
