That makes testing the agent’s behavior and process as important as testing the code it produces. A passing test run is useful evidence, not proof that the change—or the tests themselves—are correct.
What agentic AI means in software development
A conventional coding assistant typically responds to a prompt with a suggestion or completion. An agentic coding workflow gives the system a broader task and some ability to act: it can plan, use tools such as a filesystem or terminal, make changes, observe results, and iterate. Google Cloud describes a feedback loop in which an agent writes a test, runs it, inspects a failure, and attempts a fix; that illustrates a possible workflow, not a guarantee of correctness (Google Cloud’s agentic coding explainer).
The distinction matters for testing. With a suggestion-oriented assistant, review is concentrated on a proposed change. With an agent, a team may also need to evaluate what it did along the way: which tools it called, what inputs it used, whether it stayed within permission boundaries, and whether its behavior is repeatable.
How agentic AI fits into the SDLC
The software development lifecycle remains a useful way to locate an agent’s work: planning and requirements, design, coding and building, testing and quality assurance, then deployment and maintenance. Google Cloud describes AI assistance across these stages and agentic workflows that can plan and execute broader tasks (Google Cloud’s SDLC overview).

Microsoft uses a complementary lifecycle for agents: discovery, experimentation, build, deploy, and operational steady state. It emphasizes iteration, feedback, and early risk mitigation (Microsoft’s agent development lifecycle). These are useful organizing frames, not one universal lifecycle standard.
Testing implications depend on where the agent acts. A code-editing agent with access to a repository and terminal needs checks for changes and tool use. An agent involved in deployment or operations also needs controls and monitoring appropriate to those permissions and consequences.
What teams should test in an AI coding agent workflow
Task outcome and acceptance criteria
Check whether the resulting change meets the written requirements and preserves required behavior. Translate vague requests into observable acceptance criteria before delegating work; otherwise, a technically valid change may still miss the intended outcome.

Quality of the tests it writes or changes
Review whether new or modified tests exercise meaningful expected behavior, including relevant edge cases. A test that merely encodes the agent’s implementation can pass while failing to protect the requirement. Running the suite confirms only that the current tests passed under the run conditions; it does not establish that coverage is adequate or that the implementation is correct.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTool calls and their results
Inspect whether the agent used appropriate tools with suitable inputs, and whether it handled errors safely rather than silently bypassing checks. Microsoft recommends tracing tool calls and examining their inputs and outputs (Microsoft Foundry’s agent lifecycle guidance).
Permissions and safety boundaries
Verify that the agent stayed within authorized files, tools, data, and permissions. Review configuration, then test both expected and failure paths—for example, what happens when a tool is unavailable, an operation is denied, or required input is missing. The scope of this review should match the agent’s actual access.

Repeatability and regression
Keep evaluations repeatable so the team can compare behavior after meaningful changes to the prompt, model, tools, data, or code. Run regression checks before publishing or deploying. Microsoft’s guidance calls for repeatable evaluations and regression checks as part of the lifecycle (Microsoft Foundry lifecycle guidance).
Runtime behavior after release
For deployed agents, monitor quality and safety signals, review traces when behavior changes, and evaluate consequential fixes before republishing. Agent evaluation does not end at deployment; operational feedback should lead to another cycle of testing (Microsoft Foundry lifecycle guidance).

A practical testing sequence
- During development: run component-level tests and core scenario tests against the code or agent behavior being changed.
- Before deployment: run a repeatable regression set and the security and compliance checks applicable to the system.
- Exercise the real workflow: run end-to-end scenarios with the tools, data, and permissions intended for production. Include failure cases as well as the expected path.
- After deployment: monitor relevant signals, review traces when behavior shifts, and evaluate important changes before publishing them.
Microsoft Copilot Studio guidance recommends continuous testing, validating core functionality and regressions, testing before production deployment, and considering automated tests in the delivery pipeline (Microsoft’s agent testing strategy).

Can an AI agent test its own code?
An agent can run tests, inspect failures, and attempt fixes. That can shorten an iteration loop, but it is not independent validation if the agent also chose the implementation and the tests. A passing suite demonstrates that the tests it ran passed; human review and appropriately designed evaluations are still needed to determine whether the requirements and risks have been covered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to look for in an agent testing platform
When evaluating platforms, compare their actual coverage and controls rather than assuming that “agentic” implies a particular capability. Useful questions include:
- Which lifecycle stages and coding environments does it support?
- What repositories, tools, data, and permissions can the agent access?
- Can evaluations be versioned, repeated, and compared after changes?
- Do traces expose tool calls, inputs, outputs, and latency?
- Can safety and quality evaluations run before release and during operation?
- How are production monitoring and human review handled?
These are evaluation dimensions identified by Microsoft’s agent testing guidance and Google Cloud’s SDLC framing, not a scored comparison of vendors (Microsoft testing strategy; Google Cloud SDLC overview).

Where website screenshots fit in testing
For workflows that verify rendered web pages, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can provide screenshots or PDFs for visual checks; its stated screenshot features include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, device presets, dark mode, custom CSS and JavaScript, and waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle. See ScreenshotNeo and its documentation for setup and options. A screenshot can support visual verification, but it does not replace behavioral tests or review of the agent’s broader actions.
What the evidence can—and cannot—show
Vendor documentation explains workflows and recommends evaluation practices, but the cited material does not establish a quantified effect of agentic AI on defect rates, software quality, or developer productivity. Nor does it show that an agent can replace human review. Treat claims about impact as unproven unless they are supported by evidence for the specific system and conditions being discussed.
