A flaky-test freeze should apply to a specific invariant tested against specific fixture bytes—not indefinitely to a test’s display name. Finley Zhou’s proposed protocol keys each freeze to a stable property ID and a SHA-256 digest of the fixture the property read, with an evidence window of independent reruns. That makes a fixture change invalidate the old freeze instead of silently carrying it forward.
What the protocol freezes—and what it does not
Zhou’s September 3, 2026 article on DEV Community proposes a pre-merge lane for intermittent tests in agent-authored code changes. It is intended to sit alongside the full test suite, not replace it. The protocol is a practitioner proposal with example code, not an independently validated standard or published pytest plugin. Read Zhou’s article on DEV Community.
The frozen item is an observed intermittent failure for a defined property on defined input bytes. A pytest node ID or function name is not enough: names describe implementation, while the property catalog describes the invariant the test is meant to check. Zhou’s proposed record has three identifying parts:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →property_id: a stable identifier for the invariant, not the test function or node ID.fixture_digest: the SHA-256 hash of the fixture bytes the property actually read.evidence_window: independent reruns with pass and fail counts recorded before a freeze is considered.
The record is useful only if it captures the inputs that matter. If a property reads more than one fixture, the implementation needs to identify and digest the relevant bytes rather than hashing an unrelated file. The proposal assumes byte-stable fixtures and properties deterministic on those inputs.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the gate should classify outcomes
The decision depends on both the current fixture digest and the pattern of outcomes. A recurring failure is not automatically a flake: repeated identical violations point to a stable failure, while many different signatures can indicate an unstable runner or shared state.
| Current digest | Observed outcomes | Proposed action |
|---|---|---|
| Matches the recorded digest | The property holds on every run | Merge-ok for that property. |
| Matches the recorded digest | Mixed pass/fail outcomes with a recurring failure signature | Freeze candidate after the evidence window; do not skip merely because it is a candidate. |
| Matches the recorded digest | The same violation occurs every time | Block as a stable violation, not a flake. |
| Matches the recorded digest | Many distinct failure signatures | Do not freeze; investigate runner isolation or shared state. |
| Does not match | Any outcome pattern | Classify as fixture drift and drop the old freeze. The old evidence does not apply to these bytes. |
| Fixture is missing | No valid run can be made | Block because the property catalog or its inputs are broken. |
Incomplete records should block or run the test; they should not cause it to be skipped. If the property ID changes, Zhou’s proposal treats it as a new property with no prior evidence.

A practical sequence for adding a freeze
- Define the property before reviewing outcomes. Name the invariant in a property catalog, independently of the test function that currently checks it.
- Lock and identify the fixtures it consumes. Hash the bytes actually read by the property so a later edit changes the digest.
- Run an evidence window in isolation. Execute repeated property checks independently and capture pass/fail counts and failure signatures.
- Classify before recording. Distinguish a recurring intermittent signature from a stable violation or from divergent runner failures.
- Write a ledger entry. Zhou’s example uses JSON Lines with the property ID, fixture path and digest, run/pass/fail counts, failure signatures, status, and reason. The example’s seven-run counts are illustrative, not reported production data.
- Apply a freeze only on an exact match. Re-hash on each patch; skip only when a ledger record is marked
frozenand both the current property ID and digest match.
The article’s code sketches a classifier that launches subprocesses, hashes a fixture, counts outcomes, and emits a ledger record, plus a pytest collection hook. Those are example implementations, not independently run or production-tested code. The proposed hook is not a published plugin.

How much evidence is enough?
Zhou uses seven isolated runs as a starting budget, not as a validated threshold. The example does not establish statistical sufficiency, and the article explicitly cautions: “N independent runs are not a confidence interval.” Even one failure in seven runs may reflect a real race. Record the actual evidence window and treat it as bounded observation, not proof that the property is safe.

A freeze is technical debt for residual timing noise, with an owner and digest attached. It does not prove a patch correct, establish a confidence interval, or guarantee detection of production regressions.
Where the approach can fail or mislead
- Unstable inputs defeat digest matching. Generated timestamps can make every digest differ even when the meaningful fixture is unchanged.
- Runtime state can vary beyond fixture bytes. Shared clocks, live clocks, and unordered network mocks can produce divergent signatures that the fixture digest alone cannot explain.
- Subprocesses are not full isolation. The example uses subprocess isolation rather than containers; native extensions or shared temporary directories may need stronger isolation.
- Some failure classes are outside its scope. The article says this method does not measure performance, network retries, or UI flakiness.
- Some properties should never be hidden behind a freeze. Do not use a frozen property as an oracle for security or money paths, or to conceal changed I/O contracts.
- The workflow may not be worth the overhead everywhere. It offers little value to teams unable to run isolated subprocesses.
Where to run the lane
Zhou recommends a separate, inexpensive worker lane for repeated property checks instead of consuming the integration-test pool. The article offers no benchmark, cost comparison, or empirical study establishing how much faster or cheaper that choice is. It is an operational suggestion: keep reruns isolated and avoid letting a repeated pre-merge check compete with integration jobs.
