A production-ready agent harness keeps resumable execution state outside worker memory, gives every conversation or workflow a stable identifier, and defines exactly what a restart can replay. Treat checkpoints as recovery aids—not as a guarantee that an external action happens only once. Keep short-lived invocation context, thread-level execution state, and durable cross-run memory separate, then trace model and tool activity so operators can understand both the interrupted run and its recovery.

What persistence in an agent harness needs to preserve

An agent harness is the execution and state-management layer around a model: it controls the run loop, tools, state, persistence, resume behavior, and observability. The important design question is not simply whether data is saved. It is which state is saved, when it is committed, and what the system is allowed to do again after resumption.

Keep three scopes distinct:

  • Invocation context: temporary inputs and working data needed for the current model or tool step.
  • Resumable execution state: progress for a particular thread or workflow, including enough context to continue after a worker is replaced.
  • Durable application memory: user preferences, facts, or shared knowledge meant to remain available across separate threads or runs.

LangGraph describes a checkpointer as storing thread-scoped graph state and a Store as holding application-defined data across threads. A transcript, a checkpoint, and a user profile therefore solve different problems; treating them as interchangeable makes recovery and retention harder to reason about. See the LangGraph persistence documentation.

How should you persist agent state?

Use storage that survives the failure you care about

If a process restart must not erase progress, an in-memory saver is not sufficient. LangGraph’s documentation says its MemorySaver and InMemorySaver keep checkpoints in RAM and lose them when the process restarts. The same documentation names PostgresSaver and SqliteSaver as persistent alternatives. Choose a backend based on deployment topology, concurrency, backup and restore needs, operational expertise, and expected state volume; the cited documentation does not establish a universally best or fastest backend.

Reconnect to the right execution

Assign a stable thread or run identifier and pass it consistently when saving and resuming. LangGraph’s examples use thread_id, and its API reference describes threads as a way to checkpoint multiple runs separately, including in multi-tenant chat applications. The identifier is not an authorization mechanism: your application still has to verify that the caller may access that thread and its stored state. See the LangGraph checkpoint API reference.

Keep cross-run memory out of the recovery record

Persist durable facts or preferences in an application-level store with their own ownership, update, and deletion rules. A checkpoint answers “where was this execution?”; application memory answers “what information should remain available in later interactions?” Making that boundary explicit helps prevent unrelated threads from inheriting execution details and lets you manage memory independently of checkpoint retention.

How can an agent resume after an interruption?

Make the checkpoint boundary explicit

LangGraph documents checkpoints at each graph super-step, organized by thread. It also describes successful node writes being preserved when another node in the same super-step fails. In that documented runtime, completed node work can therefore be available rather than automatically repeated after a failure. The exact behavior depends on the framework and version you deploy; confirm its semantics instead of treating this as a general guarantee for all agent systems.

For each boundary, record what has completed, what remains pending, and which effects have already been requested. A checkpoint can restore the orchestration state, but it cannot by itself roll back an email, payment, database write, or other action already accepted by an external service.

Design side effects for retries

Assume a tool call may be retried when the worker fails between the external action and recording its result. Where supported, pass an idempotency key derived from the logical operation, deduplicate repeated requests, and reconcile uncertain outcomes against the external system before trying again. For actions that cannot be made idempotent, define an explicit recovery path—for example, checking whether the action occurred and escalating ambiguous cases instead of blindly resending.

Persist enough to reconstruct a pending wait

Before yielding for a long wait, callback, or human approval, save the workflow’s pending state and the information required to identify the requested decision. On resume, re-check the current identity and permissions before carrying out the approved action; do not treat an old approval record as proof that the resumed caller remains authorized. OpenAI’s guide to running agents describes durable integrations for workflows that span waits, retries, or process restarts, including human-in-the-loop tasks.

Which persistence approach fits the workflow?

Several architectures can support resumable agents, but they place state and operational responsibility in different places. The official documentation establishes these patterns, not a neutral performance or cost ranking.

Approach Documented state role Questions to evaluate
LangGraph checkpointer and Store The checkpointer saves graph state by thread; the Store holds application-defined data across threads. The persistence documentation names PostgreSQL and SQLite saver implementations. Does the selected backend fit your topology, concurrency, backup and restore process, retention rules, and state volume? How will you authorize access to each thread?
OpenAI Agents SDK sessions The running-agents guide documents sessions for persistent chat state and resumable runs. Which session data is needed for recovery, what survives the failure modes in your deployment, and how will session identifiers connect to your authorization and observability systems?
Durable workflow integrations The OpenAI guide names Dapr, Temporal, and Restate integrations for long-running workflows that may span waits, retries, or process restarts. How are workflow history, retries, approval pauses, storage ownership, portability, and operations handled in the specific integration and configuration you plan to use?

Evaluate each option against the same criteria: the state boundary, what is durably committed before the next action, which steps can repeat, how pending writes are handled, external-effect deduplication, retention and access controls, pause-and-resume support, trace detail, and operational burden. The OpenAI running-agents guide documents integration patterns; it does not establish that one is universally cheaper, faster, or more reliable. Framework behavior and availability can change, so verify package versions and deployment semantics against the current official documentation you use.

How do you keep memory across interactions without unbounded checkpoint growth?

Checkpoint volume can grow during long conversations. LangGraph warns that accumulating checkpoints can raise latency and storage costs, and describes pruning old checkpoints or applying a retention policy as mitigations. Decide how long each category of state must exist, what can be pruned, and how a user’s deletion request affects both execution history and durable memory.

  • Set retention and deletion rules for checkpoints and cross-thread memory separately.
  • Document backup and restore procedures, including how restored identifiers map to tenants and workflows.
  • Restrict reads and writes by tenant and role; stable identifiers alone do not provide isolation.
  • Minimize sensitive data stored in snapshots and traces, and verify the chosen implementation’s current security and compliance guidance rather than assuming guarantees.

The cited documentation does not establish universal encryption, compliance, or disaster-recovery guarantees for every backend or integration. Those properties must be checked for the concrete service, deployment, and configuration you select.

What should you trace during a run and its recovery?

Observability should connect decisions, state transitions, model calls, and tool activity across the original and resumed execution. The OpenAI Agents SDK tracing guide says traces can include generations, tool calls, handoffs, guardrails, and custom events, and can be used to debug, visualize, and monitor workflows. See the Agents SDK tracing guide.

Carry correlation identifiers that let an operator find the thread or workflow, the checkpoint used for resumption, and the resumed run. Record enough detail to diagnose what happened without collecting unnecessary personal or secret data. A useful trace makes it possible to distinguish a model decision, a tool request, a tool result, a checkpoint write, and a retry.

A production-readiness checklist

  • State scopes are defined separately for invocation context, resumable execution, and durable cross-run memory.
  • Checkpoint storage survives the process or worker failure you intend to recover from.
  • Stable identifiers reconnect a run to its state, while application authorization enforces tenant and user access.
  • Checkpoint timing and retry behavior are documented and tested for the framework version in use.
  • External side effects use idempotency, deduplication, reconciliation, or a defined manual recovery path.
  • Long waits and approval steps preserve enough context to resume, then revalidate identity and permissions.
  • Retention, pruning, deletion, backup, restore, and access controls are operationally owned.
  • Traces correlate model and tool events with checkpoints and resumed runs while respecting data minimization.

LangChain’s April 20, 2026 article about its production Deep Agents runtime is a vendor-authored account of that runtime, not an independent comparison of persistence systems. It can provide product-specific context, but it does not change the need to validate the failure and recovery semantics of your own chosen stack: The Runtime Behind Production Deep Agents.
