Switching between CarPlay and Android Auto often makes one system’s weak points impossible to ignore, but “glaring” is a personal verdict. The useful question is which specific behaviors bothered you, and whether they come from Android Auto itself, from the app you were using, from the car, or from your phone’s setup. This article separates those causes, names the trade-offs that show up in published firsthand reporting, and gives you a way to test the same claims in your own vehicle.
What a “glaring flaw” can and cannot prove
A flaw that stands out after a few weeks of daily driving is real to the person experiencing it, but it does not automatically show that a platform is broken for everyone. Both systems project phone functions such as navigation, calls, messaging, and music onto the car’s display. The result you get depends on four things that vary independently: the phone, the apps you use, the vehicle’s own head unit, and the settings on both sides.
That matters because the same complaint can have very different sources. A map that routes badly may be a navigation app issue rather than a projection-system issue. A voice assistant that misunderstands you may depend on the phone’s language and assistant settings. A clumsy steering-wheel control may be the car manufacturer’s implementation. Before you decide a platform is at fault, identify which layer produced the problem.

- Both platforms put core phone functions on a compatible car display, but the experience differs by phone, app, vehicle, and settings.
- CarPlay supports third-party navigation apps, including Google Maps and Waze. Comparing Apple Maps with Google Maps is therefore not the same thing as comparing CarPlay with Android Auto.
- Android Auto compatibility depends on the car. Google’s documentation directs users to the vehicle manufacturer for model-specific support.
- Apple’s iOS 26 announcement on June 9, 2025 listed new CarPlay features, including widgets, Live Activities, pinned conversations, Tapbacks, and a compact incoming-call view. Availability depends on the vehicle, region, and software version.
Check the setup before you blame the platform
Many complaints about Android Auto come down to a setup mismatch. Google’s Android Auto help documentation currently lists these requirements:

Tested for vibration resistance to support stable performance on bumpy roads.
- Wired use: Android 9.0 or higher, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable.
- Wireless use: a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. Google lists Android 11.0 as compatible with wireless projection.
Google’s requirements change over time, so check the Android Auto help pages for your phone and car before you troubleshoot or buy hardware. A cheap or charge-only cable is a common cause of connection drops, and it can make the whole system look unreliable when the real issue is the wire.
Where the trade-offs show up in daily use
Published comparisons tend to describe the same categories of difference. Use these as the checklist for your own observations.
Dashboard layout and glanceability
Layout is where personal taste matters most. Ask whether the home screen puts navigation, media, and calls where you can reach them without looking away from the road for long. Note whether widgets or cards show the information you need at a glance, and whether a layout that looks tidy requires extra taps to reach the same function.

Navigation behavior
With either system, the navigation app often matters more than the projection platform. Test the same destination in the same app on both systems, at the same time of day, with the same route preferences. Note re-routing speed, lane guidance, arrival estimates, and how the map appears on the car display. If the difference disappears when the app is the same, the flaw is probably not the platform.
Voice assistant understanding
Voice behavior is sensitive to language settings, microphone quality, the car’s cabin noise, and which assistant the phone is using. Test a fixed set of commands such as sending a message, starting navigation to a saved place, and changing the music. Count the failures. A few misunderstood requests on one trip is weaker evidence than the same failure repeated across several days.
Messaging workflow
Messaging is a frequent source of strong opinions because each system handles replies, read-aloud behavior, and message apps differently. Check which messaging apps are supported in each system, how notifications are announced, and how many steps a reply requires. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement also added Tapbacks and pinned conversations to CarPlay, so the answer may have changed since older reviews were written.

For Android Users: Requires a phone running Android 11 or later with "Wireless Android Auto" enabled. Includes USB-A to USB-C adapter for wider port compatibility.
Media and physical controls
Media apps, playback controls, and the car’s knob, touchscreen, or steering-wheel buttons can behave differently depending on the vehicle’s implementation. Test the controls you use most while driving. If a steering-wheel button works on one system and not the other, record the car model and software version, because the vehicle may be the cause.
A firsthand comparison and its limits
In an August 1, 2026 TechRadar article, contributor David Nield reported preferring Android Auto overall after a 250-mile round trip in the UK. He said he preferred Google Maps and Gemini behavior on Android Auto, but liked CarPlay’s layout choices and found its native messaging workflow strong. His CarPlay leg ran on the iOS 27 public beta, so any Siri observations from that leg describe a pre-release software version.
That is a valuable account of one car, one phone setup, and one route. It is not a controlled test, and it does not show how either system performs for other drivers. Use it as a model for attributing preferences to specific features, not as a ranking.

Why the car matters as much as the phone
An AAA Foundation study from 2018 is still useful for one principle: automakers implement smartphone projection differently, and those differences can change how the same system feels. The study concerned older vehicle and software configurations, so treat it as a caution about variation rather than a description of current features. If your complaint is specific to one car, check whether the manufacturer’s own documentation or an owner forum describes the same behavior before assuming it applies to the platform as a whole.
Apple’s usage figure, with attribution
Apple stated in its June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement that CarPlay is used over 600 million times per day. That is Apple’s own figure. The announcement does not describe independent auditing or the method used to count uses, so it shows scale rather than a measured comparison of satisfaction with either system.
A simple method for testing your own claim
- Write down your phone model, operating-system version, car make, model, and model year, and whether you connect wired or wirelessly.
- Record which navigation, messaging, and music apps you use on each system. Use the same apps where the platform allows it.
- Run the same ten tasks on both systems over at least one week: three navigation trips, three voice commands, two messages, and two media changes.
- Log each failure with the time, the task, and what you did to recover. Separate platform behavior from app behavior.
- If connections drop, test a different certified USB cable before judging the system. Then confirm your car’s support on the manufacturer’s site.
After a week of records, you will know whether the problem belongs to Android Auto, to CarPlay, to a particular app, or to your car. That distinction is what turns a strong reaction into a useful conclusion.
If you are considering hardware to add or repair projection in an older vehicle, confirm compatibility with the vehicle manufacturer before buying. Matching the connector and checking the phone requirements matter more than any product claim.
The Bottom Line
If Android Auto feels worse to you after using CarPlay, the most defensible position is narrow: identify which behavior fails, confirm it is not caused by the app, cable, phone, or car, and judge the platform only on those repeatable results. Published firsthand reporting supports the idea that each system has trade-offs rather than a clear universal winner.
