The Aeotec Motion Sensor is a Zigbee motion detector with an integrated temperature sensor. Aeotec also specifies a 120° viewing angle and describes SmartThings alerts and automations for compatible setups. Before buying, check whether your exact hub and regional sensor model work together: compatibility depends on the controller, not just the sensor’s feature list.

What does the Aeotec Motion Sensor do?

Aeotec describes the Motion Sensor as detecting movement and reporting temperature. Its product page lists a 120° viewing angle; this is a manufacturer-stated specification, not an independent measurement. Aeotec says the SmartThings app can send alerts about unexpected movement and use motion to automate connected devices as people come and go.

In Aeotec’s examples, motion can turn compatible lights on when someone enters a corridor and switch them off after a period without movement. With a hub-connected SmartThings Home Monitor setup, the sensor can help trigger security alerts. Temperature reports may also be used in routines involving compatible thermostats or air-conditioning units. These are possible integrations, not a guarantee that every hub or device supports every routine. See Aeotec’s Motion Sensor product page.

Check your hub before buying

The first buying check is whether your existing controller supports the sensor and its Zigbee connection. Aeotec’s support page identifies the Zigbee Motion Sensor as model GP-AEOMSSEU and explains that the controller determines which wireless technologies and devices a system can use. Aeotec describes Zigbee hub support and sensor-triggered automations on its SmartThings page, but confirm compatibility for your exact hub hardware and software before ordering. Regional model differences also matter; match the model identifier to your intended purchase.

#1 Best Overall
Aeotec SmartThings Motion Sensor, Zigbee, Magnetic Mounting, Works with Smart Home Hub and Compatible Zigbee Hubs
  • 24/7 Monitoring: Receive alerts when there’s unexpected movement in your home
  • Home Automation: Set devices to automatically turn on or off as people come and go to minimize energy usage
  • Detection Ready: Adjust the sensor with the quick tilt magnetic ball mount to capture motion up to 15 feet with 120 degree view range
  • Requirements: Requires smart home hub. Perfect With SmartThings App and Aeotec Smart Things Hub or other SmartThings hub such as Samsung SmartThings Hub Gen 3. Also works with other compatible Zigbee hubs.

If you only want motion detection, compare the sensor against options that work with your current hub. The Aeotec model’s temperature reporting is an additional capability, but it is useful only if your controller and routines can make use of that data.

Who is it a good fit for?

This sensor is most relevant to someone who already has a compatible Zigbee hub and wants motion-triggered lighting, alerts, or routines. Its temperature sensor may be a useful extra if the buyer’s system can incorporate those reports. SmartThings users should consider whether the app’s notifications and automation options match their intended use.

The available product information does not establish a like-for-like competitor comparison or current pricing, so it is not possible to conclude that this is the best-value or best-performing motion sensor. Decide based on controller support and the specific motion and temperature functions you need.

Pairing and connection troubleshooting

Aeotec recommends checking that the sensor is in pairing mode and beginning setup reasonably close to the hub. Its support guidance suggests about 30 feet as a general distance, or as close as 10 feet for initial pairing. These are pairing suggestions, not a rated operating range.

  1. Confirm that the sensor is in pairing mode and that the hub supports the exact model.
  2. Start pairing near the hub, following Aeotec’s general guidance of about 30 feet or closer; for initial pairing, try within 10 feet.
  3. If connection fails, power-cycle the sensor and hub, then try pairing again.
  4. If needed, reset the sensor and repeat setup using the instructions for your model.

What this review can—and cannot—establish

Aeotec’s published information supports describing the product’s Zigbee connection, integrated temperature sensing, stated 120° viewing angle, and example SmartThings uses. It does not establish independent detection accuracy, false-alarm rate, response latency, battery life, or a measured operating range. No current price or verified retailer listing is established here, either. Treat those as unanswered buying questions rather than assuming performance from the feature list.
