Adware is software that displays advertisements, but an ad by itself does not prove your device is infected. Unwanted software becomes a concern when it displays intrusive ads, changes browser settings, redirects searches, or interferes with browser control. Start by removing unfamiliar apps and extensions; then reset browser settings if the problem persists. On Android, check whether the alerts are merely a website’s notifications before removing apps.

What is adware?

Adware is software associated with displaying advertisements. Some advertising-supported software is legitimate and disclosed. Unwanted software may instead insert or alter ads, change browser settings, redirect browsing, monitor activity, or interfere with browser control. Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted apps from malware: an unwanted app is not necessarily malware, so consider what the software does and whether you agreed to it. Microsoft Learn’s overview of unwanted software explains these behaviors.

How to tell whether ads may be caused by unwanted software

Google identifies several warning signs on computers. They warrant checking the device, but none alone establishes that adware is the cause. Google’s Chrome guidance lists:

  • Pop-up ads or new tabs that keep appearing.
  • A Chrome homepage or search engine that changes without permission.
  • Unwanted extensions or toolbars that return after removal.
  • Redirects to unfamiliar pages or ads.
  • Alerts claiming the computer has a virus or infection.

Notifications from a website can also resemble infection warnings. If alerts come from one site, check that site’s notification permission before assuming an app is infected.

Remove adware-like behavior from a Windows computer or desktop browser

  1. Do not use a pop-up’s download button to fix the warning. If an update or virus alert appears unexpectedly, avoid clicking its download prompt. Get software from its official website or, on Windows, Microsoft Store. See Google’s warning guidance and Microsoft’s advice on protecting a PC.
  2. Uninstall unfamiliar applications. Review installed apps, particularly ones added around the time the problem began. Microsoft recommends sorting by install date when symptoms are recent and removing software you did not install or want. Its unwanted-software guidance also explains why apps and browser add-ons may need separate attention.
  3. Remove untrusted browser extensions. In Chrome, open the extensions manager and uninstall extensions you do not need or trust, including ones not obtained from the Chrome Web Store. Other browsers have their own add-on controls; remove extensions you do not recognize or want.
  4. Reset Chrome only if the behavior remains. Google recommends checking for unwanted programs before resetting Chrome. Use Chrome’s reset settings flow as a follow-up; it can change browser preferences. Afterward, enable only extensions you trust. Follow Google’s current removal and reset instructions for the applicable interface.
  5. Keep built-in protection enabled and Windows current. Microsoft identifies Microsoft Defender Antivirus as built into modern Windows versions and recommends using trusted app sources. Do not disable security protections because a pop-up tells you to.

If the problem continues or removal fails, consult the device maker or another qualified support source. Google notes that persistent cases may require manufacturer help or resetting the device; see its desktop guidance.

Remove unwanted ads or alerts on Android

Ads appear outside one website

Google recommends using safe mode to identify recently downloaded apps. Remove recent apps one at a time, restarting normally after each removal to check whether the behavior stops. Keep a list of removed apps so you can restore any wanted ones. Leave Google Play Protect enabled. The exact instructions are in Google’s Android removal guidance.

Notifications come from one website

Open the site’s page information in Chrome and turn off that site’s notification permission. This addresses unwanted website alerts; it does not mean an installed adware app has been found. Google provides the steps in its Android guidance.

For downloads, use official websites and heed browser Safe Browsing warnings. Be especially wary of alerts that ask you to disable security protections.

What to do on Mac or Chromebook

Google’s desktop instructions direct Mac users to review Applications and move unwanted or unrecognized programs to the Bin. For Chromebook, Google points users to its safe-default reset guidance. Steps depend on the operating-system version, so use Google’s current desktop instructions rather than applying a Windows or Android removal sequence.

Should you use AdwCleaner?

AdwCleaner is an optional Windows cleanup utility. Malwarebytes describes it as a tool to detect and remove adware, potentially unwanted programs, and browser hijackers. Its documented workflow is to scan, review detections, select items for quarantine, and restart if prompted. Check the vendor’s system requirements and regional restrictions before downloading, and review what it detects rather than quarantining items blindly. The product description and scan instructions are vendor documentation, not independent comparisons. A separate scanner is not a required first step: start with the official platform and browser cleanup steps above.
