Monitor competitors’ ads by checking the native ad libraries for the platforms they use, recording dated observations, and comparing the creative, message, offer, and landing page over time. There is no single native search that covers every platform. Treat what you find as evidence of visible advertising—not proof that an ad is profitable or that its approach will work for your business.
What advertising competitive intelligence can tell you
Competitive ad research is a systematic review of competitors’ creative, copy, hooks, angles, platforms, and visible longevity. Its purpose is to generate useful ideas for your own marketing: a creative brief, a list of hypotheses, or a test plan.
A public ad library can show that an ad is visible in that library, along with whatever information the platform discloses for that ad. It does not, by itself, establish sales, return on ad spend, campaign profitability, or why an advertiser chose a particular audience. A creative that remains visible for a long time is a clue worth investigating, not proof of success.
How to monitor competitors’ ads step by step
- Choose a focused set of competitors. Start with direct competitors that serve a similar audience or sell a comparable offer. Add a small number of aspirational brands if their creative is relevant to your goals. AdLibrary suggests three to seven brands as a working range; that is vendor advice, not a universal rule.
- Map each competitor to its advertising channels. Check Meta Ad Library for Facebook and Instagram, Google Ads Transparency Center for Google advertising, and TikTok Creative Center for TikTok. Add other platform libraries when you have reason to believe a competitor uses those channels. Each native library is separate, so a search on one platform is not a cross-platform search.
- Search using multiple identifiers where the platform allows it. Try the consumer-facing brand name, domain, social page name, or platform-specific advertiser identity. A legal company name or account handle may not match the brand name customers know. Search options differ by platform, so confirm the current lookup method in each library.
- Record what you see with a date. Log the advertiser, platform, date checked, creative or format, visible copy, offer, destination or landing page, and any start/end dates or reach information the source discloses. A spreadsheet is usually enough for a small competitor set. Keep the original observation distinct from your interpretation.
- Revisit the same competitors consistently. A dated series of observations helps reveal changes that a one-time search cannot: new messages, altered offers, different destinations, or recurring creative. Choose a cadence your team can maintain. If manual review and record-keeping become burdensome, consider whether paid software’s coverage, archive, export, and collaboration features justify its cost.
- Turn observations into original tests. Identify the underlying idea—such as demonstrating a use case, answering an objection, or framing an offer—and adapt it to your own product, audience, and brand. Do not copy a competitor’s ad. End the review with a specific test plan, creative brief, or decision not to pursue an angle.
What to compare in each ad
Assess each ad in context rather than judging it by appearance or repetition alone. Compare the message and creative with the offer and destination, then note whether the same angle appears across multiple ads or changes over time.
#1 Best Overall
- Message and hook: What problem, benefit, objection, or use case does the ad lead with?
- Creative and format: Is it a video, image, or another format? What demonstration or visual choice carries the message?
- Audience cues: What needs or circumstances does the copy appear to address? These cues do not establish which individuals were targeted.
- Offer: Is there a promotion, trial, bundle, or other stated incentive? Record its wording rather than assuming terms not shown.
- Destination: Where does the ad lead, and does the landing page continue the same promise? Record the URL or page you observed.
- Recurrence and change: Does a similar angle reappear? Has the wording, offer, or destination changed since your prior check?
- Disclosure: Note only dates, geography, reach, or other fields that the library actually provides for that ad and category.
Which ad libraries to use—and their limits
| Source | Useful for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Ad Library | Discovering ads on Facebook and Instagram. | Available history and fields vary by ad category and geography. An empty search does not prove that no ads ran. |
| Google Ads Transparency Center | Checking Google advertising separately from social-platform libraries. | Visible history and data fields differ from Meta’s; check it independently when Google matters to the competitor’s channel mix. |
| TikTok Creative Center | TikTok creative research. TikTok’s SMB Creative Playbook describes it as “a free, public-facing website serving as a one-stop shop for TikTok creative resources globally.” It lists Top Ads, Keyword Insights, Creative Insights, trends, and creative tools. | A featured creative or resource is not independently verified evidence of a competitor’s campaign performance. |
| Other platform libraries | Research on channels such as LinkedIn or Pinterest when relevant. | Coverage and search behavior are platform-specific; verify what is available for the relevant geography and ad category. |
| Cross-platform ad research services | A consolidated interface, broader research coverage, or a persistent archive where a manual workflow no longer meets your needs. | Check which platforms and fields are actually covered, how estimates are labeled, and whether the workflow features justify the price. |
Platform history and disclosure are not uniform. Comparisons of retention can vary by platform, geography, and whether an ad is classified as political or commercial; do not assume a fixed history window across services. Check the platform’s current documentation before relying on an exact retention period or publishing an exact figure.
One historical study illustrates why library coverage should not be presumed complete, but it is narrow evidence: in a 2020 Brazilian Facebook monitoring study, researchers reported that 34 of 835 ads their model classified as political matched the Facebook Ad Library dataset. This concerns that study’s political-ad sample and method; it does not establish current coverage for commercial ads or other platforms.

How to keep the workflow useful and proportionate
For a small competitor set
Use the native libraries and a simple dated spreadsheet. Keep fields consistent between checks so you can compare observations instead of relying on memory. Save a concise description of the creative and offer, and separate facts visible in the source from your working interpretation.

A cross-platform ad intelligence or creative research product may help when you need one search interface, broader coverage, persistent records, exports, or team workflows. Before paying, verify the service’s actual platform coverage, history, search options, and evidence fields. Distinguish platform-disclosed data from vendor estimates. A broader marketing research suite is more relevant if you also need paid-search or wider competitive analysis.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a web page through one GET request, which can help you save a visual record of a page you can access. It does not replace searching each platform’s ad library or establish the performance of an ad. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.
Example cURL request, using Stripe as the target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo also offers an MCP server for AI agents, with tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. It includes 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating an empty result as proof no ad ran: search identifiers can differ, and library coverage, history, and fields vary. Try another identifier where supported and check the relevant platform directly.
- Assuming longevity means profitability: visible duration is a reason to investigate a creative, not a disclosed business outcome.
- Reading targeting into the creative: copy can suggest an audience or need, but it does not show that a particular person was targeted.
- Comparing unlike records: record platform, date, geography or category when disclosed, and what fields were actually visible. Disclosure differs between libraries.
- Copying rather than learning: extract the strategic principle and make an original execution for your product and audience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I search competitors’ ads across all platforms in one official library?
No. The platform-native libraries are separate; check each relevant platform or evaluate a cross-platform service.
Does an ad appearing in a library mean it is performing well?
No. Visibility, repeat appearances, or featured status do not establish sales or profitability.
