Chocolate and sweets lead the stated preferences in a 2025 Great Britain survey, but the best Advent calendar depends on who will open it and whether they will enjoy and use its contents. Compare the actual assortment—not just the category—against the recipient’s tastes, dietary or skin sensitivities, age, and expectations.
What people say they prefer
YouGov surveyed 2,092 adults in Great Britain on November 6–7, 2025. Respondents imagined buying or receiving a complete, store-bought Advent calendar for themselves and could select up to three preferred types. Chocolate and sweets were selected by 62%, drinks by 18%, beauty or cosmetics by 14%, and toys by 5%. YouGov survey
These are multiple-select responses, not market shares or portions of a 100% total. They describe this sample’s stated preferences; they do not measure sales, satisfaction, value, quality, or which calendar will suit a particular recipient. The drinks category included examples such as tea, coffee, beer, and wine, but the survey did not compare those subtypes.
How the four types compare
The considerations below are practical ways to compare calendars, not ratings measured by the survey.
#1 Best Overall
- The 2026 Bonne Maman Advent Calendar holds 24 mini glass jars, each filled with a different limited-edition holiday spread — flavors made once a year, for December only.
- EXCLUSIVE SEASONAL FLAVORS: Each door reveals something new — festive fruit combinations and seasonal pairings that can't be found on the regular shelf any time of year.
- Every jar is made in France with real fruit, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial additives. Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten-free, and kosher.
- The mini glass jars with their red-check lids are reusable long after December — for spices, small gifts, or holiday place settings that guests will want to keep.
- One of the few food gifts that sells out annually. Thoughtful, collectible, and genuinely delicious — for the host, the foodie, the person who has everything.
| Filling type | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|
| Chocolate and sweets | Assortment, piece size, ingredient and allergen information, dietary constraints, and whether the recipient wants a daily sweet. |
| Beauty and cosmetics | Whether items are samples or full size, product types and ingredients, fit with the recipient’s routine and sensitivities, and likelihood of use. |
| Toys | Intended age, warnings, small or detachable parts, batteries, and whether the pieces are useful or engaging. Check current product notices. |
| Drinks | Whether contents are alcoholic or non-alcoholic, serving types and amounts, recipient suitability, and storage or serving needs. |
Choose by the recipient, not the category
- For someone who enjoys a daily treat: a chocolate or sweets calendar may be an easy fit, provided the ingredients and portions suit them.
- For someone with an established skincare or makeup routine: check what each product is, its ingredients, and whether it is likely to be used rather than assuming a beauty calendar is a good match.
- For a child: match the calendar to the intended age and inspect warnings, small parts, and any battery-powered items.
- For a drinks fan: first distinguish tea or coffee from beer or wine; the recipient and serving requirements differ substantially.
- For an uncertain recipient: look through the complete contents where available. A familiar category label cannot tell you whether the specific items will be welcome.
Labels and safety: check the specific product
Food calendars
Read the actual package for ingredients and allergen information. A December 3, 2025 AESAN notice concerned one lot of Milka Pop-Up 3D (lot CWS1252831, 163 g) distributed in Spain without Spanish-language labeling. The notice said people with specified allergies or intolerances, including to milk, soy, hazelnuts and other nuts, egg, wheat, or gluten, who had the product should not consume it; it said consumption posed no risk to the rest of the population. This was a lot-specific labeling alert, not evidence that chocolate calendars generally are unsafe. AESAN notice
Toy calendars
Rules depend on where a toy is supplied and what it is designed or intended for. In the United States, CPSC says ASTM F963 is a mandatory consumer-product safety standard for children’s toys, and that its third-party testing and certification requirements apply to products designed or intended primarily for children 12 or younger. For toys supplied in or into Great Britain, the Office for Product Safety & Standards’ guidance describes requirements for toys intended for play by children under 14. It was updated March 24, 2025; Northern Ireland has separate guidance. These are jurisdiction-specific rules, not one universal standard. Great Britain toy-safety guidance
Product notices are useful to check, but should be read narrowly. On June 26, 2025, CPSC warned consumers to stop using and dispose of a particular light-up set sold as a “Nativity Advent Calendar” because a child could open its battery compartment and reach button-cell batteries. CPSC said the item had been sold online on Amazon from August 2024 to March 2025. The warning applies to that identified product, not toy calendars as a category. CPSC warning

A quick decision checklist
- Identify what the recipient genuinely likes: sweets, cosmetics, toys, tea or coffee, or alcoholic drinks.
- Check the complete contents, including serving size, product size, ingredients, age guidance, and warnings.
- Account for dietary restrictions, allergies, skin sensitivities, age, and whether items can be stored or used as intended.
- Look for current, product-specific safety notices in the relevant country or region.
- Consider whether the recipient will use most of the contents; a higher preference for a broad category does not establish value for a particular calendar.
