Advanced Video Coding (AVC) is a video compression standard also known as H.264 and MPEG-4 Part 10. These names refer to the same standard, not three different codecs. AVC defines how video is compressed into a bitstream and how a conforming decoder reconstructs it.
What does AVC mean?
AVC stands for Advanced Video Coding. It is jointly designated ITU-T H.264 and ISO/IEC 14496-10, and is commonly called H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 10. The ITU-T specification published in August 2024 identifies the standard as H.264: ITU-T H.264.
Is AVC a codec, a file format, or software?
AVC is a video coding standard: it specifies the compressed video representation and the rules a decoder follows to reconstruct video samples. An encoder or decoder is an implementation of that standard, built into software or hardware. The standard itself is not a particular encoder product, media player, or file container.
AVC, MP4, and AAC are different things
AVC describes the video coding. MP4 is a container format that can hold video and audio streams, while AAC is an audio codec. For example, IEC’s portable consumer electronics guidance identifies MP4 containing AVC video and AAC audio as a file-format combination: IEC portable consumer electronics guidance.

How do AVC profiles and levels affect compatibility?
AVC defines profiles that select feature subsets for different application domains, and levels that set conformance constraints. The 2024 ITU-T specification describes fourteen profiles and includes byte-stream delivery and decoder-conformance rules. A device or application need not support every profile, level, or video format, so the label “AVC” alone does not guarantee compatibility.
When checking a particular workflow, look at the encoder’s and decoder’s documented support for:
Rank #2
- Profile and level
- Resolution and frame-rate limits
- Chroma format and bit depth
- Whether the implementation can encode, decode, or both
- The container and audio codec used alongside the video
These are implementation-specific capabilities; a standards designation does not certify support for an unnamed device.
Where is AVC used?
ITU-T lists videoconferencing, digital storage media, television broadcasting, Internet streaming, and communication among H.264’s intended application areas: ITU-T H.264. In practice, seeing AVC or H.264 on a file or in a device setting identifies the video coding standard, but not necessarily the file’s container, audio format, or the full capabilities of the device.
