The most reliable responsive sites combine fluid Grid and Flexbox layouts with targeted media queries, container queries, and bounded fluid values. Choose each rule according to what should drive the change: the viewport or user settings, a component’s available space, or a value that should scale smoothly.

Start with a fluid layout, not a pile of breakpoints

Responsive design is an approach rather than a single CSS feature. Its foundations include fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries; modern Grid and Flexbox also make it easier to build layouts that adapt naturally to available space. MDN describes responsive web design as an approach, not a separate technology.

Use Grid and Flexbox to let content wrap, reflow, and occupy available space. Constrain images so they cannot overflow their containing block:

img {
  max-inline-size: 100%;
  block-size: auto;
}

Begin with a layout that works across a range of widths, then add conditional rules only when the content needs a meaningful change. A breakpoint should respond to a design constraint—such as a navigation row no longer fitting—not to a particular device name.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use media queries for page and device conditions

A media query is the right tool when a rule depends on the viewport or another media feature, rather than on one component’s local placement. Conditions can include viewport width, orientation, aspect ratio, media type, and user preferences. See MDN’s media query guide for syntax and available conditions.

For example, use a media query for a page-level navigation transition, where the whole page layout changes at a width determined by the actual content:

.site-nav {
  display: flex;
  flex-wrap: wrap;
  gap: 1rem;
}

@media (width < 48rem) {
  .site-nav {
    flex-direction: column;
  }
}

The 48rem threshold is an illustrative design choice, not a universal breakpoint. Test the navigation with its real labels, spacing, and font settings, then set a threshold where the layout genuinely needs to change.

Use container queries for reusable components

A card may appear in a wide content column, a narrow sidebar, or a multi-column grid. Its usable width depends on that placement, so a viewport breakpoint alone cannot reliably describe when its layout should change. A size container query lets descendants respond to a declared ancestor’s size. MDN’s container query guide explains the setup and query syntax.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Declare the relevant container, then query it by name when explicit targeting makes the intended context clear:

.article-list {
  container-type: inline-size;
  container-name: articles;
}

.article-card {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr;
  gap: 1rem;
}

@container articles (width > 40rem) {
  .article-card {
    grid-template-columns: 1fr 2fr;
  }
}

container-type: inline-size establishes the size-query context based on the container’s inline size. Give a container a name when the rule should clearly target that ancestor or when another ancestor could otherwise be matched. The 40rem threshold above is an example only: choose it by testing the actual card, including its copy, image proportions, and spacing.

If the browsers you must support lack the specific container-query feature you use, keep the base layout workable with Grid or Flexbox and provide an appropriate media-query fallback. Check compatibility for the query type and browser versions relevant to your audience rather than assuming every container-query feature has identical support.

Scale component values with container query units

Container query units let values follow a query container instead of the viewport. For example, cqi is one percent of the query container’s inline size. Other units include cqb, cqmin, and cqmax. This can make type or spacing scale with a component’s placement, but unconstrained scaling can become too small or too large.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
.article-card__title {
  font-size: clamp(1.25rem, 1rem + 2cqi, 2rem);
}

Use a clear minimum and maximum when a component-relative value needs a legible range. Confirm that the chosen query container is the intended one and inspect the component in each placement where it is reused. See MDN’s container-type reference for the container context and related units.

Use clamp() for bounded fluid type and spacing

clamp(minimum, preferred, maximum) lets a CSS value scale fluidly while remaining within bounds. It is useful for typography or spacing that should grow smoothly, without adding a breakpoint just to change that one value.

.page-title {
  font-size: clamp(1.75rem, 1.1rem + 2.5vw, 3.5rem);
}

The first and third arguments set the floor and ceiling; the preferred expression changes with the viewport. These values are illustrative, not a tested prescription. Tune them against the design’s type scale and line wrapping, and check zoom behavior as well as narrow and wide screens. MDN’s clamp() reference includes fluid font-size examples.

Use a fluid function when a value should vary continuously. Use a media query when a layout needs a discrete transition—for example, changing a navigation arrangement or column structure. The two approaches work together: a page can use breakpoints for layout and clamp() for type and spacing between them.

Respect motion preferences

Responsive behavior includes user preferences, not just screen dimensions. The prefers-reduced-motion media feature detects a user setting requesting reduced motion. Remove or reduce non-essential movement; do not assume all motion is necessarily non-essential, since some movement may convey information or be necessary to functionality.

@media (prefers-reduced-motion: reduce) {
  .animated-element {
    animation: none;
    scroll-behavior: auto;
  }
}

Apply the rule to the site’s actual motion patterns, including interaction-triggered movement. MDN’s prefers-reduced-motion reference and media queries for accessibility guide explain the preference and its use.

Choose the technique by what should trigger the change

Technique Responds to Best fit Key implementation point
Fluid Grid and Flexbox Available layout space and content Baseline reflow and wrapping Let content adapt naturally before adding conditional rules.
Media query Viewport, media, or user preference Page-level transitions and preference-aware styling Set thresholds based on where the design needs a discrete change.
Container query A declared container’s supported features, such as inline size Reusable components in different local placements Establish the right container context; name it when explicit targeting helps.
Container query unit Query container dimensions Component values that should scale with local width Use bounds when unconstrained scaling could hurt legibility.
clamp() A fluid preferred value within minimum and maximum bounds Continuous scaling for type or spacing Choose values by checking wrapping, zoom, and the design’s intended scale.

These are complementary tools, not competing site-wide strategies. A robust implementation commonly uses fluid layout as its base, media queries for page-level or preference changes, container queries for locally responsive components, and bounded fluid values where smooth scaling is appropriate.

Compatibility: distinguish container-query features

Basic size queries, style queries, scroll-state queries, and anchored queries are distinct features; support for one does not prove support for the others. MDN’s guide to container size and style queries describes these categories and notes support caveats for newer forms. In particular, its guide says regular-property style queries were not supported in browsers at the time it was written, while custom-property style queries were available. Recheck current compatibility for the exact feature you plan to use and the browsers your site needs to serve.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots to inspect responsive layouts, you can capture a page through ScreenshotNeo’s website screenshot API instead of setting up a browser automation flow. A GET request returns an image or PDF, and its API documentation covers the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo or sign up free.
