PHP can call ColdFusion’s exposed services through SOAP by retrieving a service WSDL, inspecting its operations and types, and invoking those operations with authorized credentials. DZone Refcard #116 demonstrates that approach with Adobe ColdFusion 9 (CF9) and PHP 5, including document, PDF, image and chart tasks. Treat its code and endpoint details as historical examples: verify compatibility with the ColdFusion and PHP versions you deploy.

What the DZone Refcard covers
DZone Refcard #116, written by Marco Tabini, explains how PHP 5 scripts can consume services exposed by ColdFusion 9. Its examples are not a current compatibility guarantee; they document an integration pattern and a set of ColdFusion capabilities available in that era.
The refcard focuses on SOAP service consumption. Adobe’s current administrator documentation still describes exposed services and identifies SOAP and AMF/Flash remoting as access methods, but current service names, security screens, endpoints, authentication behavior and payloads must be checked against the installed release.

The PHP-to-ColdFusion SOAP model
- Identify the exposed service endpoint and WSDL. The WSDL describes the remote operations and data types that the service publishes.
- Create a PHP SOAP client. PHP 5’s
SOAPClientis used in the refcard’s examples to consume the WSDL. - Inspect the contract before calling it. The refcard uses
__getFunctions()to list callable methods and__getTypes()to inspect the service’s declared types. - Supply the required credentials and operation data. Calls include service credentials and the arguments required by the selected operation.
- Handle the returned document, file, image or chart data. Your PHP application then saves, transforms or presents the result according to the operation’s response contract.
Because a WSDL is the contract, do not infer parameter names or complex types from a different ColdFusion release. Generate or inspect the contract exposed by the server you will actually call.
Administration and security prerequisites
A successful SOAP request requires more than PHP code. The refcard says an administrator must authorize a service user for the required exposed services and permit the connecting client IP address. Adobe’s current ColdFusion Administrator documentation likewise documents service permissions and client-IP access controls.

Access checklist
- Create or identify the ColdFusion service user used by the PHP client.
- Grant that user only the exposed services the application needs.
- Allow the PHP host’s client IP address in the relevant ColdFusion controls; account for proxies or load balancers that may change the source address seen by ColdFusion.
- Confirm any service-specific configuration and dependencies before testing.
- Use the deployed version’s administrator labels and authentication settings rather than assuming the CF9 interface is unchanged.
Dependencies can be service-specific
The refcard gives SMTP configuration as an example for Mail services and OpenOffice as an example dependency for Document functionality. A service can therefore be enabled and authorized yet still fail until its external dependency is configured.

Adobe’s current administrator guide also lists Mail, Document, PDF, Image, Chart and POP services among exposed services. That continuity confirms the service categories, not that every CF9 operation or endpoint remains available unchanged.

A practical implementation sequence
1. Pin the versions and deployment topology
Record the ColdFusion edition and release, PHP version, web server, TLS requirements, proxy path and the host from which requests originate. The DZone examples target CF9 and PHP 5; current PHP SOAP behavior and ColdFusion administration may differ.
2. Obtain the server’s WSDL
Use the endpoint and WSDL exposed by the target ColdFusion installation. Confirm that the WSDL is reachable from the PHP runtime, not merely from your desktop browser.

3. Inspect functions and types
Use the SOAP client’s __getFunctions() and __getTypes() methods to verify operation names, arguments and complex types. This prevents a PHP call from being built around an obsolete CF9 contract.
4. Configure authorization and network access
Have the administrator grant the service user the selected service permissions and allow the PHP client’s source IP. Keep these controls narrower than a blanket exposure of every service.

5. Verify dependencies
For Mail, check SMTP settings. For Document operations that rely on the refcard’s example environment, check the required OpenOffice integration. Check equivalent prerequisites for PDF, Image and Chart operations in the installed release.
6. Invoke one operation and inspect the response
Start with a single low-risk operation, pass credentials and arguments exactly as described by the WSDL, and log SOAP faults without logging passwords or document contents. Validate the returned type before writing files or presenting output to users.

- Old sample code: CF9 and PHP 5 are explicitly the refcard’s target versions. Names, authentication options, endpoint conventions and data types may have changed.
- Service availability: An administrator can expose or restrict services, so a service listed in documentation may not be enabled on a particular server.
- Network identity: Client-IP rules apply to the address ColdFusion sees, which may differ from the application server’s private address when proxies are involved.
- External dependencies: Mail and Document examples rely on supporting software or configuration; SOAP connectivity alone does not prove those functions will work.
- Protocol choice: Adobe documents both SOAP and AMF/Flash remoting as access methods. Choose the method supported by your application and deployed ColdFusion version instead of assuming the refcard’s SOAP path is the only option.
Where to verify current settings
Use Adobe’s ColdFusion Administrator guide for current exposed-service, permission and client-IP controls. Use the DZone Refcard for the historical CF9/PHP 5 workflow and examples, then reconcile every endpoint, operation, dependency and security setting with your own release documentation.
