To adjust game controller axis sensitivity, start in the game’s controller, camera, or aim settings. Tune the affected stick’s sensitivity, deadzone, and—if available—response curve one at a time. If the game does not offer the control you need, check a per-game platform configuration such as Steam or a controller profile utility. Menu names and options vary by game, platform, and controller.
What sensitivity, deadzone, and response curve change
Sensitivity changes how much output a stick movement produces. Increasing it generally makes the response faster; lowering it can make small adjustments easier. Some games provide separate horizontal and vertical settings, while others use one value.
Deadzone is the area around the stick’s center where movement is ignored. A larger deadzone can filter unintended input when a stick is untouched, but it also means small deliberate movements may not register until the stick moves farther. Microsoft explains that software can normalize the remaining range and optionally apply a nonlinear transform; controllers can also differ in sensitivity. See Microsoft’s XInput overview.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A response curve changes how output builds as you tilt the stick. It can make the initial movement feel gentler or cause output to ramp more sharply with greater tilt. It is distinct from overall sensitivity: two settings can produce different behavior at the center and near the edge even if a full tilt feels similar. Valve documents stick curves and sensitivity scaling in Steam Input Source Modes, and Sony provides curve controls for a specific controller in its DualSense Edge PC guide.

Which axis or stick should you change?
In many games, the left stick controls character movement and the right stick controls the camera or aiming. Treat that as a common layout, not a guarantee: games can remap controls, and an axis may refer to horizontal or vertical movement within a stick. Use the game’s input display or controller test view, when available, to confirm which input is producing the behavior you want to change.
If aiming feels too fast, adjust the camera or aim sensitivity for the stick the game uses for aiming. If character movement feels too abrupt, look for movement or left-stick controls. When the game offers separate horizontal and vertical values, change only the direction that feels wrong before retesting.

Tune the settings in a controlled order
- Open the game’s controller settings. Look under Controller, Controls, Camera, or Aim. Find the sensitivity or deadzone control for the relevant stick or axis. The exact menu path and labels depend on the game.
- Address unintended input first. If the view or character moves while the stick is untouched, raise that stick’s deadzone in small steps until the unwanted movement stops. If small deliberate motions are not registering, cautiously lower the deadzone. Sony’s guide defines the deadzone as the amount of stick tilt required before input is recognized.
- Adjust sensitivity in small increments. Test a small correction as well as a broad movement, such as turning the camera across the screen. Keep the setting that feels controllable in the game rather than aiming for a universal number; the official guidance does not establish one best value for every controller or game.
- Try a response curve if the game provides one. Change it after the deadzone is workable. Test small tilts and larger tilts separately, since curves affect how output maps across the stick’s range.
- Retest before changing another layer. A game and a platform profile can each apply sensitivity or deadzone behavior. Change one layer at a time so you can identify which adjustment helped.
Where to adjust controller axis sensitivity
In the game
Check controller, controls, camera, or aim menus first. These settings are usually the most directly relevant to how a particular game responds. Look for stick sensitivity, horizontal or vertical sensitivity, deadzone, and response curve where offered; not every game exposes all of them.
In Steam on PC
Valve’s player guide describes opening Steam’s Controller Settings and configuring a controller for a specific game. The available controls depend on the controller and game layout; do not assume every setting appears for every setup. See Steam’s Getting Started for Players guide and the Input Source Modes documentation for the relevant configuration concepts.

In a controller profile utility
For DualSense Edge on Windows PC, Sony’s PlayStation Accessories app supports stick sensitivity and deadzone customization. Its profile controls include curve adjustments and a test view for checking stick input. This is a controller-specific option, not a general requirement; the game or platform may already provide the adjustment you need. Details are in Sony’s DualSense Edge PC guide.
How to tell whether the adjustment helped
- With the stick released, check whether unintended movement remains. If it does, adjust the relevant deadzone modestly and retest.
- Make small, intentional stick movements. If they fail to register or feel delayed, the deadzone may be too large.
- Test a broad movement as well as a small correction. Sensitivity or curve changes can feel suitable for one range but not the other.
- Use an in-game input display or controller test view if available to see when movement registers and how the stick is being read.
Why there is no universal sensitivity number
Games, controllers, and software layers map stick movement differently. Microsoft’s XInput documentation lists example deadzone constants—7,849 for the left thumbstick and 8,689 for the right, with a trigger threshold of 30—but these are implementation constants, not recommended tuning values for every controller or game. Likewise, a value that feels precise in one game may feel too fast or slow in another.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
Changing a deadzone can filter unintended movement, but these settings alone do not establish that a hardware fault has been fixed. If the control still behaves incorrectly after careful adjustments, return to the game’s test or input view and check which layer is changing the signal before making further changes.
