No: Ada Lovelace’s 1843 Bernoulli-number algorithm is not still in use as running software. It was published as a sequence of instructions for Charles Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine, a mechanical computer that was never completed. Its importance is historical: it is widely recognized as an early published program description, not a program that has operated continuously or runs on computers today.

What was Ada Lovelace’s program?

In 1843, Lovelace translated an article by Luigi Menabrea about Babbage’s Analytical Engine and added extensive notes of her own. One note, known as Note G, sets out a procedure for calculating Bernoulli numbers. The Computer History Museum describes the Notes as the first published description of step-by-step operations for solving certain mathematical problems, and says they were three times the length of Menabrea’s article. Computer History Museum

Note G’s instructions included arithmetic operations and intermediate storage locations. They were written for a machine design, rather than for a finished computer that could execute them. The German Patent and Trade Mark Office likewise describes the Engine as never completed and identifies Note G as a first program or software description. German Patent and Trade Mark Office

Why isn’t it still running today?

The Analytical Engine remained a proposal and was never completed as an operating computer. Lovelace’s algorithm therefore was not put into operation on the machine for which it was written, let alone kept running into the present. The Max Planck Society’s interview with mathematician Anna Siffert says the program has no practical applications today. Its continuing value is as a historical example of how a programmable machine might be instructed. Max Planck Society

In what sense is it the “first” computer program?

The strongest careful description is that Lovelace published an early, influential step-by-step program description for a general-purpose machine. Calling it unequivocally “the world’s first computer program” goes further than the evidence can settle: what qualifies as a program, and how to assign credit, depend on definitions.

Institutions frame the claim differently. Oxford’s History of Science Museum says the work is sometimes “a little inaccurately” called the first computer programme. The Computer History Museum emphasizes the first published stepwise description and notes that biographers debate the extent and originality of Lovelace’s contribution. A scholarly chapter by Christopher Hollings, Ursula Martin, and Adrian Rice discusses the definitional problems around calling her the world’s first programmer while recognizing her Bernoulli-number algorithm. This is not a choice between crediting Lovelace or Babbage. The scholarly account recognizes important contributions by both, and the Computer History Museum presents the attribution debate as unresolved rather than treating their roles as mutually exclusive.

What was Lovelace’s broader insight?

Her notes considered more than arithmetic. Lovelace argued that a machine following instructions could manipulate symbols according to rules, provided those operations were specified. The Computer History Museum treats this as a key conceptual step toward general computation. In Note A, she wrote: “We may say most aptly that the Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.” Computer History Museum

Is FORTRAN the oldest program still in use?

That question mixes up a programming language with an individual program. Guinness World Records has a record titled “Oldest programming language still in use” for FORTRAN. Its page says FORTRAN was originally released in April 1957 and displays a 58-year record dated 2015. That is a dated record entry about a language, not proof that Lovelace’s Bernoulli algorithm remains in use—or a current calculation of FORTRAN’s age. Guinness World Records

Claim What it refers to What the evidence establishes
Lovelace’s Bernoulli algorithm A published sequence of instructions for the proposed Analytical Engine A historically significant program description; it is not running software today.
FORTRAN record A programming language Guinness displayed a 58-year record dated 2015; that is not an individual program’s age or continuous use.

What should you call it?

  • Accurate: “Ada Lovelace’s 1843 Bernoulli-number algorithm is an early, influential published program description.”
  • Needs qualification: “the first computer program” because the label depends on definitions and attribution.
  • Incorrect literally: “still in use today” if it means the original algorithm is running as software.
