Activision will develop the next Halo title, but Xbox has not confirmed that game for PC or announced its release date or PC features. The move could benefit PC players if a dedicated team delivers a strong Halo game with solid PC support; for now, that is a possibility, not an announced outcome. Xbox’s confirmed PC details are for a different game, Halo: Campaign Evolved.

What did Activision announce about Halo?

On September 22, 2026, Xbox said Activision will develop the next Halo title through a new, purpose-built team separate from ongoing Call of Duty development and plans. The announcement describes a change in who will make the next game; it does not present a PC-first strategy or announce product details. Xbox’s announcement also says a small Halo Studios team will continue supporting the community and games already in market.

Xbox reported 268 role eliminations across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. The figure covers those groups collectively; it should not be read as 268 Halo Studios layoffs.

Will the next Halo game come to PC?

The cited handoff announcement does not name the next game’s platforms, release date, PC controls, or feature set. It therefore does not confirm a PC release or establish how a PC version would compare with console versions. Until Xbox or the game’s developers announce those details, PC availability remains unknown.

Halo: Campaign Evolved | Standard Edition | XBOX Series X|S and Windows Digital
  • A CLASSIC REIMAGINED — Experience the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign rebuilt with high‑definition visuals, updated cinematics, refined controls, and a brand‑new three‑mission adventure.
  • ENHANCED AUDIO & VISUALS — Relive every mission with modernized animations, a remastered soundtrack, and fully rebuilt sound design for deeper immersion across the Halo universe.
  • NEW STORY CONTENT — Play as the Master Chief alongside Sgt. Johnson in Operation: Meteorite, a standalone campaign featuring new environments, enemies, and gameplay challenges.
  • CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play solo, in 2‑player split‑screen co‑op (console only), or up to 4‑player online co‑op with full crossplay and cross‑progression support.
  • XBOX PLAY ANYWHERE — Play across XBOX Series X|S and Windows PCs at no additional cost, with shared progress and achievements across supported devices.

That distinction matters because Halo: Campaign Evolved is a separate, already-announced title—not the upcoming Activision-led game. In its June 7, 2026 announcement, Xbox gave Campaign Evolved a July 28, 2026 launch date, listed Windows PC and Steam among its platforms, and said the game supports cross-play and cross-progression across PC and consoles. Those commitments apply to Campaign Evolved only. Xbox’s announcement does not establish platform or feature plans for Activision’s next Halo.

What could make the handoff good for PC players?

A dedicated team may offer focus

Xbox describes Activision’s group as purpose-built and separate from ongoing Call of Duty development. A team focused on Halo could give the next title sustained attention, but the announcement says nothing about its size, experience, technical approach, or results. The structure is a potential advantage, not proof of a better game or a PC version.

Activision’s ambition is not a product commitment

Activision President Rob Kostich said the goal is to make “the greatest Halo game ever,” while staying true to what players love about the series. That is an aspiration, not a guarantee of quality or a promise about PC support. GamesRadar’s September 22, 2026 report quotes Kostich’s statement.

PC players still need concrete commitments

A PC release alone would not answer whether the game offers the options players need. Xbox has not yet specified PC availability, timing, controls, or feature parity for this title. Those details—not the developer handoff by itself—will determine what PC players can actually expect.

Halo: Master Chief Collection - PC [Digital Code]
  • The Master Chief’s iconic journey includes six games, built for PC and collected in a single integrated experience where each game is delivered over time.
  • Whether you’re a long-time fan or meeting Spartan 117 for the first time, The Master Chief Collection is the definitive Halo gaming experience.

Why are some Halo fans cautious?

Halo’s identity is part of the concern. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park argues that Halo Infinite differs from Call of Duty through features such as slower pacing, mirrored loadouts, power weapons, and vertically designed maps. That is the writer’s analysis, not an official design brief for the next game. It helps explain why fans may want reassurance that a new team will preserve what makes Halo feel distinct. PC Gamer’s discussion also raises concerns about Activision’s stewardship; it does not report a specific PC benefit.

Xbox says Halo Studios will continue community and in-market support while Activision’s team develops the next title, but the announcement does not spell out creative approval, staffing, or operational boundaries between the groups. The handoff’s long-term effect on Halo’s identity and support is therefore not yet clear.

What should PC players watch for next?

  • Platform confirmation: An official announcement naming Windows PC or Steam for the Activision-led game.
  • Release timing: A date or release window for that same title, rather than dates attached to Campaign Evolved.
  • PC-specific details: Information about controls, technical options, and whether PC and console versions share features.
  • Gameplay and creative direction: Evidence of how the new team intends to preserve Halo’s distinct identity.

Until those details arrive, the most accurate reading is that Activision’s appointment creates a possible opportunity for PC players, but Xbox has not announced a concrete PC win for the next Halo.
