Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is an arcade-style aerial combat game, not a study-level flight simulator. Start with the control mode that feels easiest to steer, keep your target in view, and evade when missiles threaten. Then let each mission briefing guide your aircraft and weapon choices.
Choose a flight-control mode
The game offers Standard and Expert controls. The main difference is how you turn: Standard turns directly with sideways stick input, while Expert uses aircraft roll and pitch. The publisher explains the distinction in its control-mode explainer.
Standard: steer directly into a turn
Push the left stick left or right to turn. This is a straightforward starting point if you want directional steering without first rolling the aircraft.
Expert: roll, then pitch
Use the left stick to roll left or right, then pitch up or down to make the turn. Try this mode if you want more direct roll-and-pitch control over the aircraft’s orientation.
#1 Best Overall
- ACE COMBAT 8 DELIVERS HIGH-OCTANE AERIAL ACTION! Step into the cockpit and take flight as an elite pilot across stunning skies. Enter intense dogfights, eliminate threats, and rise through gripping missions to earn your wings. The game is developed by PROJECT ACES, the acclaimed team behind the franchise.
- AERIAL WARFARE IN LIVING SKIES. Campaign Mode showcases stunning visuals with dynamic multi-layered cloudscapes that capture the majesty of living skies. Feel the rush of a fast-paced arcade-style gameplay and deploy powerful weapons to dominate the battlefield.
- A VISCERAL JOURNEY FROM COCKPIT TO GROUND. Beyond the chaos in the air, breathtaking first-person scenes reveal your pilot’s story through breathtaking cinematics. Experience the pressure of command, the weight of decisions, and the bonds forged in battle. Between missions, bond with your squad members, rise to meet adversity, and prove yourself as a true ace.
Neither mode is established as universally better. Pick the one that helps you stay in control while tracking targets; you can switch later if you want to compare. Exact button assignments depend on platform and setup, so check the in-game settings rather than relying on a generic button chart.
Build a simple rhythm for combat
Fast aerial combat rewards awareness as much as firing. The publisher highlights dogfights, missile evasion, high-G turns, dynamic weather, and 360-degree flight in its game-systems walkthrough. Use this sequence to keep your attention on the next useful action:

- Independent throttle & brake levers offer fast, intuitive control for rapid speed adjustments during combat
- Ambidextrous, symmetrical design
- Dedicated High‑G Mode button for instantly trigger High-G turns
- Officially Licensed by Bandai Namco Entertainment and SONY
- Orient toward the objective. Know what the mission asks you to attack or support before chasing a target.
- Keep the target in view. Turn to maintain a useful angle instead of firing while the target is poorly lined up.
- Attack when you have an opportunity. Once you can bring a target into your attack path, engage rather than spending the whole fight maneuvering without a plan.
- Evade incoming missiles. Shift from pursuit to defense when threatened. High-G turns are one defensive maneuver, not something to hold constantly; use them when the situation calls for a sharp change of direction.
Use wingmen as part of the fight
You can issue attack or cover orders to wingmen in real time. An attack order lets you direct pressure toward the enemy; cover is the alternative when you want support focused on defense. Their value depends on the situation, so treat them as tactical options rather than commands that are always right for every fight.

Some missions feature colossal enemy superweapons. Bandai Namco says these targets can be damaged outside designated target zones, and that destroyed enemy weapons can trigger wreckage chain reactions against nearby targets. Inspect the target and surrounding battle area instead of assuming the only useful attack point is a marked zone.

Prepare for the mission in the briefing
Mission types include dogfights, air support for ground troops, and naval strikes, according to the publisher’s game overview. An aircraft or special weapon that suits one sortie may not fit another, so read the briefing before committing to a loadout.
- Identify the objective. Determine whether the sortie is focused on aerial enemies, ground forces, naval targets, or another stated mission goal.
- Choose an aircraft and special weapon for that task. The publisher advises matching these choices to the situation and your playstyle.
- Consider available upgrade parts. The walkthrough also identifies upgrades as a loadout consideration; use them to shape your setup rather than assuming one build is best for every mission.
Do you need a flight stick?
A flight stick is not established as necessary. TechRadar’s reviewer completed play using a standard Xbox Wireless Controller on PC, while PC Gamer reported early-access player complaints about HOTAS support. These are limited observations, not a complete compatibility guide for every device, platform, or setup. If you plan to use a specialist controller, verify its current support for your platform before relying on it.
