Accessible web tabs need more than buttons that swap content: they need clear tab-to-panel relationships and a consistent keyboard model. This guide explains the W3C pattern, helps you choose manual or automatic activation, and gives you a working manual-activation example. Here, “tabs” means an on-page widget that switches panels—not the browser’s ordinary Tab-key sequence through page controls.
What is tabbed navigation?
A tabbed interface groups related content into a tablist, its individual tab controls, and associated tabpanel regions. Activating a tab displays its panel and hides the others. The W3C’s Tabs Pattern describes this interactive widget.
That is distinct from the page’s tab sequence: the order in which keyboard users move among focusable controls by pressing Tab. The W3C discusses that broader keyboard behavior in Developing a Keyboard Interface. Inside a tab widget, Tab typically enters at the selected tab and then leaves the widget; arrow keys move focus between tabs.
Should tabs activate on focus or Enter?
The W3C ARIA Authoring Practices Guide (APG) documents two activation models. Choose one deliberately: in manual activation, focus can move without changing the displayed content; in automatic activation, focusing another tab selects it immediately.

What ARIA attributes do tabs need?
Use native buttons for tab controls, then add the roles and relationships that communicate the widget’s structure. Give the tablist an accessible name, such as by pointing aria-labelledby to a visible heading.

role="tablist"and an accessible name. - Each control has
role="tab", anid,aria-controlspointing to its panel, andaria-selected="true"only when selected. Other tabs havearia-selected="false". - Each panel has
role="tabpanel", anid, andaria-labelledbypointing back to its tab. - Inactive panels are hidden. The selected tab is the only tab in the page’s Tab sequence; roving
tabindexmakes the other tabs reachable with arrow keys instead.
If a panel begins with content that is not itself focusable, consider adding tabindex="0" to the panel so keyboard users can move into it. Follow the APG examples for the chosen activation model and test the result with keyboard navigation and assistive technology.
How do I add arrow-key navigation to tabs?
The following self-contained example uses manual activation. Right and Left Arrow move focus with wraparound; Home and End move to the first and last tab. Enter or Space activates the focused tab. The script also handles pointer clicks by synchronizing focus, selected state, and panel visibility.

</script>In this manual model, moving focus does not update aria-selected or reveal a different panel; activation does both. Native buttons handle Enter and Space activation through click events, while the explicit key handling above supports selection when those keys are pressed on the focused tab. The code assumes one tab widget on the page; if you use multiple widgets, scope the tab and panel queries to each widget rather than querying the whole document.
The example provides the semantic structure and interaction, not visual styling. Add a clearly visible focus indicator that is distinguishable from the selected-tab appearance. Keep the DOM order logical, and do not use positive tabindex values to impose an artificial keyboard order; W3C guidance recommends matching focus order to the page’s reading order. Check that the interface remains usable when magnified and that content reflows.

How do I keep focus and selection clear?
Focus and selection are related but different states. In manual activation, arrow keys can move focus to a tab while another tab remains selected and its panel stays visible. Update aria-selected only when the user activates a tab; do not style focus and selection as if they were interchangeable. W3C’s keyboard guidance states that “For a web page to be accessible, all interactive elements must be operable via the keyboard.”
Keep pointer behavior consistent with the keyboard model: clicking a tab should produce the same selected state and visible panel as keyboard activation. For automatic activation, focus movement itself performs that selection and panel change. The APG’s manual example and automatic example provide model-specific interaction details.

What to check before publishing
- Tab enters the widget at the selected tab, and a subsequent Tab leaves it in the page’s logical order.
- Arrow keys move among tabs as intended; Home and End reach the first and last tabs in the model shown here.
- For manual activation, Enter or Space selects the focused tab without changing panels merely on focus movement.
- For automatic activation, moving focus also changes the selected tab and visible panel.
- Every tab’s
aria-controlspoints to its panel, every panel’saria-labelledbypoints to its tab, and only the selected tab is in the Tab sequence. - Inactive panels cannot be reached as visible content, the focus indicator is easy to see, and panel content can be entered by keyboard.
