Instead, underscores communicate intent: a single leading underscore marks a non-public name by convention, while a double leading underscore in a class body triggers name mangling to reduce accidental name clashes. Neither convention makes an attribute inaccessible or secure.
Does Python have access modifiers?
Not for ordinary class members. Python has no public, protected, or private keywords that block callers from reading or changing an attribute. The Python tutorial puts it directly: “ ‘Private’ instance variables that cannot be accessed except from inside an object don’t exist in Python.” (Python tutorial, section 9.6.)
Python code can still establish interfaces and manage attribute behavior, but the familiar visibility labels are not runtime barriers. Underscore patterns are naming conventions or transformations, not security controls.
What do public and single-underscore names mean?
| Form | Intended signal or behavior | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
name |
A public-facing name by convention | Does not automatically validate or protect data |
_name |
A non-public implementation detail by convention | Does not prevent access |
__name in a class body |
Triggers class-name-based name mangling, which helps reduce accidental subclass name clashes | Does not make a value secret or inaccessible |
| A descriptor-managed public attribute | Lets code customize attribute reads and writes | Is not a language-level visibility modifier |
A single leading underscore is a signal to other programmers: this name is an implementation detail, and code outside the class or module should generally avoid depending on it. Python does not stop access.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
class Account:
def __init__(self, owner, balance):
self.owner = owner # public by convention
self._balance = balance # non-public by convention
account = Account("Mina", 100)
print(account.owner) # Mina
print(account._balance) # 100: accessible despite the convention
Use an underscore when you want to communicate that callers should use a supported interface instead of relying on a particular internal detail. That convention helps code evolve, but it does not prevent callers from reaching the attribute.
How do double-underscore variables work in Python?
An identifier with two leading underscores, such as __audit_tag, in a class definition is subject to name mangling. Python rewrites its name using the class name, so __audit_tag defined in Account is stored under a spelling such as _Account__audit_tag. The transformation helps avoid accidental name collisions when a subclass defines an attribute with the same double-underscore spelling. It is not a privacy mechanism. (See the Python Programming FAQ.)

class Account:
def __init__(self, owner, balance):
self.owner = owner
self._balance = balance
self.__audit_tag = "A1"
account = Account("Mina", 100)
print(account._Account__audit_tag) # A1: deliberately using the mangled spelling
Code that knows the transformed spelling can access the value, so do not use double underscores to store passwords, secrets, or other sensitive data. The practical distinction is intent: use one underscore to mark an implementation detail; use two leading underscores when avoiding accidental subclass collisions is useful.
Can you access a double-underscore variable outside a class?
Yes, if you use the mangled name. The original spelling may not be found as an attribute on the instance, but the class-name-prefixed spelling can be used deliberately, as in account._Account__audit_tag. This makes the attribute less likely to collide accidentally; it does not make it inaccessible.

Does the underscore rule affect from module import *?
There is a separate import convention: when a module is imported with from module import *, names beginning with an underscore are omitted. That rule concerns this particular import form, not access to class members generally, and it is not a privacy guarantee. (Python tutorial, section 6.1.)
How can Python manage attribute reads and writes?
When code needs behavior on attribute access—such as customizing reads and writes—it can use a descriptor. A descriptor is assigned to a class attribute and implements methods such as __get__ and __set__; it manages behavior rather than declaring a built-in private member. The official Descriptor Guide demonstrates this pattern.

class Managed:
def __get__(self, obj, objtype=None):
return obj._value
def __set__(self, obj, value):
obj._value = value
class Example:
value = Managed()
Here, value is the public-facing attribute and the descriptor handles reads and writes through it. Descriptors are one available mechanism for managed access; they are not required for every attribute or a replacement name for a private modifier.
