Cloud infrastructure and AI can help with particular bottlenecks, but neither guarantees faster delivery: results depend on tool scalability, data governance, integration, and how proposed designs are verified.
What slows electronics development with legacy workflows?
Electronic design automation (EDA) spans the design, verification, and manufacturing of integrated circuits and electronic systems. Modern EDA portfolios also cover printed circuit board (PCB) and system-level work, and some tools can run on premises or in cloud environments. Siemens’ EDA overview describes that breadth; actual capabilities and deployment options vary by product.
Late feedback makes problems more expensive to resolve
If a design issue appears only after a later verification stage, integration milestone, or physical build, teams may need to revisit earlier decisions and coordinate changes across disciplines. Siemens’ 2022 systems-design eBook describes integrating verification throughout system design so issues can be found and addressed closer to where they occur. It also presents integration across electrical, mechanical, software, and manufacturing work as part of a broader systems-design approach. Read the Siemens Electronic Systems Design eBook.
Compute contention and provisioning delay limit throughput
When many engineers run simulation, characterization, or verification jobs on shared infrastructure, competing demand can create queues. Cadence’s cloud EDA white paper also identifies the delay involved in buying and installing hardware, alongside practical complications such as moving large design databases and version-managed files, matching tool-specific hardware needs to cloud infrastructure, and accounting for limited tool scalability. The paper is a vendor publication advocating cloud EDA, so its constraints are useful planning questions—not neutral proof that cloud is best for every team. Read Cadence’s cloud EDA white paper.

Which workflow changes can make the biggest difference?
Move verification closer to design decisions
Plan checks throughout design rather than treating verification as a final gate. Earlier feedback can reveal errors while the relevant design context is still active, reducing the distance between finding a problem and making a correction. The useful measure is not simply how many checks run earlier, but whether teams can act on their results without losing data continuity between engineering disciplines.
Evaluate behavior virtually before committing to hardware
Simulation and virtual validation can let teams assess behavior before a physical prototype or target hardware is available. Siemens describes virtual testing as a way to reduce reliance on physical prototypes and presents a digital twin as a lifecycle model that can incorporate actual performance data. That feedback matters: a model that is never updated from real-world performance can drift away from the product it is meant to represent.

Synopsys announced its Electronics Digital Twin platform on March 10, 2026, describing cloud-based labs, virtual platforms, early software development, collaboration, and validation workflows, initially focused on automotive use cases. Synopsys said the platform could enable up to 90% of software validation before hardware availability; that is the company’s stated capability for its initial focus, not a general result for all electronics programs. See Synopsys’ announcement.
Automate repeatable work, but keep engineering checks in the loop
AI-assisted automation is emerging in simulation, verification, physical design, test, and PCB workflows. Siemens’ AI overview describes uses of GPU acceleration, machine learning, reinforcement learning, and generative or agentic AI in EDA. The important distinction is between automating task execution and accepting an output as correct: engineering teams still need validation against deterministic, physics-based tools and suitable physical tests. See Siemens’ EDA AI overview.

In a July 26, 2026 announcement, Siemens described Fuse EDA AI Agent workflows that check decisions against physics-based EDA engines. The company also claimed more than 10X shorter characterization turnaround and 5X to 10X lower token costs for its agentic Solido characterization capabilities. Those figures are Siemens’ announcement claims, not independent comparative benchmark results. They should not be assumed for other workflows, tools, or workloads. Read Siemens’ announcement.
When does cloud EDA make sense?
Cloud is most relevant when a team needs to handle variable compute demand, add capacity without waiting for an on-premises hardware purchase, or use a deployment model that fits its operational responsibilities. It does not remove the need to move and protect design data, configure workloads, or confirm that the EDA tools can use the available compute effectively.

| Deployment approach | What it means for planning | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| On-premises infrastructure | Compute and data remain in infrastructure the organization operates. | Can capacity meet peak demand? How long does procurement and installation take? Who handles maintenance and access controls? |
| Managed cloud EDA | A provider manages some or more of the cloud environment and its operations. | Which responsibilities stay with the engineering organization? How are access, security, data movement, and workload configuration handled? |
| Self-managed cloud | The organization operates its EDA environment on cloud infrastructure. | Does the team have the infrastructure and security expertise to configure, monitor, and support it? |
| Mixed deployment | Workloads or environments are split between internal infrastructure and cloud. | Which jobs benefit from each location, and can data and version-managed files move reliably between them? |
| SaaS or bring-your-own-cloud platform | These are options Synopsys described for its Electronics Digital Twin platform. | Check the platform’s current product terms, availability, governance controls, and fit for the intended use case; the labels do not make its offering equivalent to other deployment models. |
Cadence discusses managed, self-managed, and mixed cloud approaches in its white paper. Synopsys’ announcement describes SaaS and bring-your-own-cloud options for its Electronics Digital Twin platform. These are vendor-described models, not an independent feature comparison, and the labels alone do not establish identical services or responsibilities.
Check the workload before adding capacity
- Demand pattern: Is capacity pressure steady, or does it occur in temporary peaks such as characterization, simulation, or verification?
- Tool scaling: Can the specific EDA jobs exploit additional servers or parallel capacity? More infrastructure does not automatically shorten a job if the tool or workload cannot use it.
- Data and governance: Where may proprietary design files reside, who can access them, and what security and audit controls must apply?
- Data movement: How large are the databases and version-managed files, and can the required transfers and synchronization fit the workflow?
- Operational ownership: Which environment matches the organization’s infrastructure expertise and responsibility for configuration, support, and security?
How should teams compare acceleration options?
Compare the workflow outcome, not just a product label or a vendor’s speed claim. A useful evaluation connects the bottleneck to a measurable engineering result and specifies how that result will be checked.

- Identify the constrained stage. Determine whether delays come from late verification, shared compute queues, slow data handoffs, or a lack of virtual access to the target system.
- Choose the intervention that addresses it. Earlier checks target late feedback; elastic compute targets temporary capacity shortages; connected models target discontinuity between disciplines; automation targets repeatable tasks.
- Define evidence of improvement. Track an outcome relevant to the bottleneck, such as queue time, elapsed job time, time to resolve a defect, or the amount of validation completed before hardware is available. Compare like-for-like workloads and retain the validation criteria.
- Review the controls and integration. Confirm data access rules, audit needs, database movement, tool compatibility, and whether electrical, mechanical, software, verification, and manufacturing teams can work from current connected data.
- Validate the result at the appropriate level. Check automated suggestions against deterministic engineering tools, and use physical tests where the application requires them. Virtual results are valuable evidence, not a reason to skip necessary validation.
How to read vendor productivity figures
Vendor claims can point to capabilities worth evaluating, but the figure is meaningful only with its workload, baseline, measurement method, and scope. For example, Siemens’ electronics engineering software page reports a 75% development-time reduction with simulation, attributing the statement to “best-in-class companies” and citing Aberdeen in accompanying text. The underlying Aberdeen report, sample, and methodology are not established by that page, so the figure should not be treated as a universal or independently validated expected outcome. See Siemens’ electronics engineering software page.
Likewise, broad claims such as “up to 1000x” speed improvements across EDA engines do not establish that a particular job will improve by that amount or that the comparison uses a relevant baseline. Ask vendors for workload-specific evidence, and reproduce the comparison on representative designs where practical. Keep the measured result distinct from the expected benefit.
