There is no evidence-backed easiest AAC app for everyone. The right choice is the one a communicator can reliably access, with vocabulary, speech options, and support that fit their needs across everyday settings. TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life, and Proloquo2Go differ in approach and capabilities, but available official descriptions do not establish a universal winner. Trial the options with the communicator and their AAC team when possible.
How do you compare AAC apps?
AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) apps let people communicate using tools such as synthesized speech, symbols, and on-screen keyboards. A feature list cannot tell you which app will be easiest for a particular person. Compare how each system fits the communicator and the people who will support its use.
- Access: Can the person select buttons accurately and comfortably? Consider touch, switches or other alternative access, button size, grid density, and any visual or motor accommodations.
- Vocabulary: How are words organized? Systems may emphasize core vocabulary, motor patterns, categories, or typing. Consider whether the layout supports communication now and can grow without making familiar words hard to find.
- Speech: Listen to the available voices and languages. Check how messages are composed and whether speech plays as words are selected or after a complete message.
- Customization and support: Find out how to add words, symbols, or personal photos; change layouts or speech; and back up or share settings. Also identify who can make changes and help communication partners learn the system.
- Practical fit: Verify device and operating-system compatibility, regional price and licensing, and the support available where the app will be used.
What is the difference between TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life, and Proloquo2Go?
The official descriptions point to different approaches, not a tested ranking of ease of use or speech quality. PRC-Saltillo describes LAMP Words for Life as combining its Unity language system with Language Acquisition through Motor Planning, and says it is designed for beginning through skilled communicators. It describes TouchChat as a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty using natural speech (PRC-Saltillo’s app information).
AssistiveWare describes Proloquo2Go as a symbol-based AAC app using its Crescendo vocabulary, with grammar support, keyboard access, and text-to-speech (Proloquo2Go product information). “Proloquo” and “Proloquo2Go” are different apps, according to AssistiveWare’s support documentation (Proloquo2Go support index).

These descriptions explain what publishers say their products offer. They do not establish which system a given communicator will learn, access, or use most comfortably. Ask the AAC team to help compare the actual vocabulary layouts and access methods, rather than choosing from a brand description alone.
What speech and customization options does Proloquo2Go offer?
AssistiveWare reports that Proloquo2Go offers more than 100 synthesized voices across English, Spanish, French, and Dutch, including multiple accents and bilingual use with language switching mid-sentence. It also reports 23 preset layouts, ranging from 9 to 144 buttons per page. These are publisher-reported features; available voices can vary by region, so confirm what is offered for your user before deciding (AssistiveWare product information).

The app’s publisher says users can customize words and appearance, put personal photographs on buttons, and use alternative access, switches, and keyguards. Its support index covers editing and organizing buttons and folders, adjusting speech output and grid size, bilingual use, and backup and sharing (AssistiveWare support index).
Balance vocabulary visibility with comfortable access
A larger grid can keep more vocabulary visible and reduce the need to navigate between pages, but only if the communicator can see and select the buttons. AssistiveWare’s Progressive Language guidance recommends providing enough buttons to support vocabulary and reduce navigation while keeping them visible and touchable. It also describes revealing vocabulary gradually without moving words the user has learned (AssistiveWare’s Progressive Language guidance).

Do not assume that the fewest buttons will be easiest, or that the densest grid is best. Try layouts with the communicator and consider accuracy, visibility, and how easily they can locate useful words.
Which devices do AAC apps work on?
Compatibility is app-specific. AssistiveWare lists Proloquo2Go for iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac as a separate app; do not assume that a license or setup transfers between devices (AssistiveWare’s product listing). A compatible iPad is one possible hardware route, not a universal requirement for AAC. Confirm the app’s current device and operating-system requirements with its publisher before buying hardware or a license.

Other AAC apps may support different platforms. A Queensland Health guide and a 2024 comparison chart show that availability varies, but the chart is dated and should not be treated as a current compatibility authority (Queensland Health AAC app guide; 2024 comparison chart). Check current requirements directly with each app publisher.

- Check device and access compatibility. Confirm the app supports the device and operating system you plan to use. Test touch or alternative access with the communicator rather than relying on a compatibility list alone.
- Try practical grid sizes. Check whether buttons are easy to see and select, and whether the communicator can find words without excessive navigation.
- Listen to speech and language options. Try the available voices and any languages the communicator uses. Check how a message is assembled and spoken.
- Test personalization. See how words, symbols, photos, and layout changes are added. Ask how changes can be backed up or shared and who should make them.
- Plan support. Identify who will help maintain the vocabulary and train communication partners to use and model the system across settings.
- Verify local terms. Ask the publisher about current regional price, license terms, and availability before purchase.
What can the available evidence tell you?
The official product descriptions establish features, not comparative outcomes. They do not provide a fair cross-app ranking for ease of use, a head-to-head usability test, or comparative speech-intelligibility results. App-store ratings and counts of voices or buttons do not show that an app will work best for a particular communicator. Treat publisher claims as descriptions of capabilities, then judge fit through supported, individual trials.
