Overnight restrictions are planned on the A47 near Norwich in October 2026, but the road is not closing continuously for weeks. The first reported works run from Saturday, October 3, into the week beginning October 5; a separate set of closures is planned for October 24–26 for an escorted transformer delivery. The schedule below was reported on October 3, 2026, and may change, so check National Highways’ live closure information before travelling.

Where and when are the first A47 restrictions?

The October 3 report describes a sequence of restrictions around Honingham and the A47/A11 Thickthorn junction, rather than a full closure of the A47.

Date and time Reported restriction
Saturday, October 3 One lane between Honingham roundabout and Wood Lane junction closes, with temporary traffic lights.
From Monday, October 5, overnight The A47 westbound closes between the A140 and Thickthorn junction.
Tuesday, October 6 to Friday, October 9, overnight Further overnight lane restrictions and traffic management at the A47/A11 Thickthorn roundabout.

The report gives the overnight work window as 20:00–06:00 BST. It lists a signed diversion via the A1074 and A140 for the affected westbound restrictions. These dates, sections and routing are the report’s schedule, not a guarantee of current road conditions. AOL’s October 3 report has the reported details; check National Highways’ Thickthorn project page for current information.

What is planned for October 24–26?

A second disruption window is associated with an escorted transformer convoy. It is distinct from the early-October scheme-related restrictions.

Time period Reported closure
20:00 Saturday, October 24 to 06:00 Monday, October 26 The A47 eastbound entry slip road at Thickthorn; also the eastbound A47 between Wood Lane Junction South roundabout and Longwater Interchange, including Norwich Road at Honingham roundabout in both directions.
20:00 Sunday, October 25 to 06:00 Monday, October 26 A further eastbound A47 closure between Watton Road and Ipswich Road to reinstall traffic management.

National Highways’ project page also identifies October 24–26 as a planned closure period for the transformer delivery. The detailed sections and times above are those reported by AOL; check live information before setting out.

AOL reports that the convoy will travel under police escort from the Port of King’s Lynn to Swardeston at speeds up to 12 mph (19 km/h). The report gives maximum dimensions of 85 metres (278 feet) and weight of 350 tonnes. These are figures attributed to AOL’s 2026 report, not figures stated on the reviewed National Highways project page.

Why are the Thickthorn works happening?

The A47 Thickthorn project is at the junction of the A47 and A11 near Norwich. National Highways says it will add two new connections between the roads to ease congestion. Its project page lists a cost range of £216 million to £239 million and an expected end date of 2028/29.

The project’s wider traffic-management plan is separate from the dated overnight closures above. National Highways says a traffic-management switch is planned for October 2026, with two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane through to autumn 2027. This describes the longer-running arrangement, not the hours of the reported overnight restrictions.

How to check your journey

  • Check National Highways’ live closure information and alerts close to departure; the authority warns that closures can change at short notice.
  • Confirm the direction, junctions and overnight hours for your route rather than assuming every A47 restriction affects the whole road.
  • Follow signed diversion routes and allow extra time. The A1074 and A140 diversion is the route reported for the early-October westbound restrictions.
